  1. 5)      On the footage I saw, there was a brief flash that  
  2.     brightened the entire frame just before  
  3.     the object made the right angle turn.  What caused this  
  4.     flash?

  6. 6)      Could this be or have some relationship with SDI  
  7.     testing?  
  8.   
  9. 7)      What is the position or opinion of the astronauts  
  10.     who filmed the object?  
  11.   
  12. 8)      How did "HardCopy" or Don Ecker obtain this  
  13.     footage?  
  14.   
  15. 9)      Does the extent of this investigation include  
  16.     congressional interest?  In other words, give me some idea  
  17.     of what level of personnel is working on this.  
  18.   
  19. 10)     When can the public or I expect this investigation  
  20.     to conclude?

  22. With the exception of number 3 (an obviously loaded  
  23. question), it seemed like a good list.

  25. On June 10th, I was at work when I received a call from  
  26. Bill.  He says that the person involved with the  
  27. investigation would be faxing me the answers within the next  
  28. hour.  The answers arrived on schedule.  The answer sheet  
  29. began with a few paragraphs stating the need for secrecy,  
  30. the rules I must follow and the request that I not get  
  31. paranoid.  It stated that the "HardCopy" footage was of  
  32. "Event #2", taken during STS-48.  Further, it was NASA's  
  33. opinion that the flash was from an attitude thruster firing.  
  34. Lastly, The sheet stated that three major government offices  
  35. were involved and that an official congressional inquiry had  
  36. occurred.That was it.  Bill Eatwell's involvement ceased at  
  37. this point at the insistence of the unnamed source.  I was  
  38. also enjoined to not reveal any of this to anyone, including  
  39. Bill.So here I was, involved in an honest-to-God high level  
  40. investigation.  Yet, all I could do was sit and wait.  Just  
  41. days from this, we would be publishing the June HUFON  
  42. REPORT.  Though anxious to tell someone, anyone of this, I  
  43. held my peace and reported nothing in the newsletter.  A  
  44. little over two weeks later, another event changed the  
  45. course of my involvement.

  47. What with the presidential race developing into a three way  
  48. free-for-all, I had been checking out "Larry King Live" on  
  49. CNN each night.  On June 26 at 8:32pm (30 minutes into his  
  50. show), I suddenly remembered Larry King and switched to it.  
  51. Astonishingly enough, he was introducing Don Ecker in LA.  
  52. and James Oberg (ostensibly representing NASA) in Houston.  
  53. The topic?  You guessed it.  I jumped up (I'm getting good  
  54. at this) and shoved a tape in.  What followed was a head to  
  55. head confrontation between Don, doing his best impression of  
  56. a UFO investigator, incensed at the government cover-up that  
  57. Oberg was there to perpetrate and James, doing his best to  
  58. appear as an interested "space nut" while touting the NASA  
  59. line.  Between the personal attacks on each other (that  
  60. Larry King appeared powerless to control), some facts were  
  61. revealed that jibed with the information I had received.  
  62. This, at least, verified that I was dealing with a serious  
  63. investigator.

  65. One of the calls taken that night by Larry King was from  
  66. Vincent DiPietro from Sykesville, MD.  He apparently had  
  67. digitally enhanced some of the Event #2 footage revealing a  
  68. possible domed object.  Mr. Ecker knew of this and, by  
  69. inference, admitted he knew Mr. DiPietro. Still, Mr.  
  70. DiPietro's opinion followed the NASA party line; that the  
  71. object was an ice crystal that moved suddenly due to a  
  72. shuttle attitude thruster firing.  His opinion is noteworthy  
  73. due to his name showing up in a very prominent manner later.  
  74. But, I'm getting ahead of myself.  More on Vincent DiPietro  
  75. later.

  77. Although I was told not to, I called Bill once more and  
  78. informed him that while I was keeping my mouth shut, the  
  79. story was showing up on nationally broadcast programs.  
  80. Enough was enough.  I had shown good faith.  The secrecy was  
  81. becoming an irritant, if for no other reason than my friend  
  82. and UFO confidant (not to mention co-editor of HUFON REPORT,  
  83. Vince Johnson, deserved to know about this story.  Now I  
  84. wanted to talk to someone.  After this call, I wondered if I  
  85. would hear from anyone again.  I didn't have to wait long.

  87. On Saturday, June 27th, Bill called me with a very brief  
  88. message.  The source of my information would be calling me  
  89. in 15 minutes.  Well, finally.  Moments later, the phone  
  90. rang.  To my surprise, it was Ron Madeley, a past president  
  91. of HUFON.  He explained that he was giving me exclusive  
  92. information, unavailable to any other publication.  He  
  93. stated that his belief in my seriousness to the study of  
  94. UFOs and his opinion that  HUFON REPORT had become the best  
  95. UFO newsletter around helped him pick me.  I'm not above  
  96. praise so I thanked him, then insisted that I be shown  
  97. something to convince me.  Exactly, what was going on?  Why  
  98. "Event 2"?  Were there other events?  He agreed to visit me  
  99. and bring the visual evidence of more than I was  
  100. aware of.  This story was about to become something much  
  101. bigger, involving Congressional evasion, implausible  
  102. deniability, and a flock of scientists, astronauts and  
  103. physicists.

  105. A few days later, Ron arrived at my house, bearing a  
  106. briefcase.  We sat on the sofa as he discussed some of the  
  107. background of this particular shuttle flight.  STS-48 was a  
  108. September '91 launch of the space shuttle Discovery.  It  
  109. carried several scientific experiments including radiation  
  110. monitoring, zero gravity crystal growth, polymer growth and  
  111. rodent physiology.  Cargo payloads included the UARS (Upper  
  112. Atmospheric Research Satellite) and the APM-03 (Atmospheric  
  113. Particle Monitor-3).  There were five crew members: John  
  114. Creighton, Commander; Kenneth Reightler, Jr. Pilot; Charles  
  115. D. Gemar, Mission Specialist 1; James F. Buchli, Mission  
  116. Specialist 2; and Mark N. Brown, Mission Specialist 3.  
  117. Although this was not a DoD mission, all crew members were  
  118. active duty military personnel.  Ron mentioned a few other  
  119. tidbits about congressional involvement but did not  
  120. elaborate any further.  The time had come to show and tell.  
  121. He handed me a video tape.  He explained he was going to  
  122. show me Event #2 as it should be seen, not the multi-  
  123. generational degraded footage shown on "HardCopy".
