  1. As a lifelong supporter of our space exploration efforts I  
  2. have observed many hours of NASA footage. Never have I seen  
  3. events such as those recorded by STS-48. Lighted objects  
  4. could most certainly be debris or ice crystals illuminated  
  5. by the sun, however, I can conceive of no possible scenario  
  6. that could explain the objects that are travelling in  
  7. opposite directions. Presumably, thruster plumes should  
  8. propel debris in one direction only. Another potential  
  9. explanation would be meteor storms or space debris from  
  10. previous launches. But again, these explanations cannot  
  11. account for the observed trajectories .

  13. According to our source, NASA no longer distributes a live  
  14. downlink from shuttle missions, instead using a delay  
  15. similar to that used by talk radio stations to censor  
  16. offensive remarks. Sanitizing video downlink from shuttle  
  17. missions, and deleting sections of the official archives is  
  18. not in the interest of the taxpayers who fund NASA. The need  
  19. for further official scientific inquiry is obvious.

  21. In the meantime, the anomalous events recorded by Discovery  
  22. astronauts during STS-48 can only be classified as UFOs, in  
  23. the strict sense of the term.

  25. Note: Vince DiPietro's report to FUFOR (the Fund For UFO  
  26. Research) provided the descriptions of events for which  
  27. video was unavailable to HUFON Report. Interestingly,  
  28. DiPietro, a NASA employee at the Goddard Space Flight Center  
  29. now publicly endorses the "ice crystal" explanation.

  46. The Strange Case of STS-48

  49. It was 1:43am Saturday morning, June 6, 1992.  My wife had  
  50. retired for the evening and I was flipping through the cable  
  51. channels as men are compelled to do.  Just by chance (or  
  52. providence), I landed on KHTV (Ch 39 locally) where the  
  53. program "HardCopy" was airing.  The host was stating  
  54. "...amazing videotape taken by a space shuttle astronaut,  
  55. astounding evidence of UFOs!"  Well, For over a year and a  
  56. half I have been compiling UFO-related television segments  
  57. from various programs.  I jumped up and shoved my latest  
  58. tape in the VCR and hit record.  What followed was  
  59. intriguing to say the least.  Don Ecker, staffer to UFO  
  60. Magazine, had obtained footage filmed from a recent shuttle  
  61. mission and had brought it to "HardCopy."  The footage  
  62. showed a dark Earth positioned in the lower two-thirds of  
  63. the screen.  Banded around its middle, the lights of a major  
  64. city sparkled.   The Earth's curvature ran from right mid-  
  65. frame to upper left corner.  Above this, dark space was  
  66. punctuated by a few stars.  A small bright object suddenly  
  67. appeared midway down the visible edge and traveled right to  
  68. left at a fast rate following the curvature.  There was a  
  69. brief flash of light that bloomed from the upper left corner  
  70. and the object made a sudden sharp right hand turn, picked  
  71. up velocity and sped off into the darkness of space!  A  
  72. split second after this unusual turn, another object  
  73. streaked upwards from lower in the frame and whizzed past  
  74. the approximate point where the first object would have been  
  75. had it not made the right hand turn.Don Ecker expounded that  
  76. this was an alien spacecraft making an evasive maneuver just  
  77. before something is shot at it.

  79. Mr. Ecker's opinion not withstanding, NASA's official  
  80. explanation was that it was ice crystals formed from waste  
  81. water.  "HardCopy's" stance was that this piece of film was  
  82. either the UFO smoking gun or space debris.  I found the  
  83. entire footage to be something unique and possibly  
  84. important.  Still, this was "HardCopy" after all, not "60  
  85. Minutes" and with most news events the truth follows some  
  86. time later.The next day I called a few people I knew to  
  87. inquire whether they had seen it.Vince Johnson and Bill  
  88. Eatwell had not.

  90. However, later, Bill called me back with a mysterious  
  91. message.  He said that after speaking of this program to  
  92. some of his friends, an unnamed caller instructed him to  
  93. contact me and ask that I refrain from speaking about the  
  94. footage any further and, in particular, not publish anything  
  95. about this in HUFON REPORT. If I agreed and showed good  
  96. faith, I would receive more information about the event.  At  
  97. first,this rubbed me wrong.  I could understand that if the  
  98. footage was a "smoking gun" and if an investigation was  
  99. underway, the need for secrecy may be justified.  What I  
  100. couldn't accept was hearing all this third hand.  If I am  
  101. asked to spike a story, I want to know who is doing the  
  102. asking.  Instead, I was mollified by the promise of straight  
  103. answers to any 10 questions I wished to ask about the  
  104. HardCopy footage.  My curiosity, at this point, had grown  
  105. exponentially.  Being the beggar and unable to choose, I  
  106. agreed.

  108. On June 8, I faxed the 10 questions I had compiled to Bill.  
  109. He, in turn, faxed them to a neutral fax location (number)  
  110. he was given.  The questions were as follows:  
  111.   
  112. 1)      What is the entire scenario of what I witnessed  
  113.     (i.e., what was transpiring)?  
  114.   
  115. 2)      Which shuttle mission did this occur on?  
  116.   
  117. 3)      If the object is an alien spacecraft, what was its  
  118.     size, speed and distance from the camera?  
  119.   
  120. 4)      Was this object taking evasive action to avoid  
  121.     some sort of weaponry?
