  1.         This is in response to the request for information concerning

  3.         Amateur Radio activities from the Space Shuttle.

  7.         First of all the historical part of the answer. In 1981 (I think) 
  8.  
  9.         Owen Garriott (W5LFL) carried a Motorola 2 meter HT aboard the 
  10.  
  11.         Columbia on the Spacelab 1 flight (STS-9). He operated FM voice 
  12.  
  13.         only and needless to say he work a whole lot of folks all over 
  14.  
  15.         the world.

  19.         In 1985 Tony England (W0ORE) carried SAREX ( Shuttle Amateur 
  20.  
  21.         Radio Experiment) on the Spacelab 2 flight. SAREX consisted of 
  22.  
  23.         that same HT but this time with a Robot SSTV converter. Tony 
  24.  
  25.         engaged in 2-way slow scan TV QSO's with people on the ground in 
  26.  
  27.         addition to voice of course. By the way there were two hams on 
  28.  
  29.         that flight. John Bartoe, W4NYZ was also a member of the crew.

  33.         The next Amateur Radio activity from the Space Shuttle will be 
  34.  
  35.         from Columbia on the Astro-1 mission currently scheduled for 
  36.  
  37.         April 26, 1990, just 9 months from now. I will be carrying 
  38.  
  39.         SAREX-2 on that flight consisting of the same Motorola HT that 
  40.  
  41.         has been used in the past but this time with the inclusion of a 
  42.  
  43.         packet radio TNC with some interesting features. We will of 
  44.  
  45.         course be engaging in normal FM voice operation and packet QSO's 
  46.  
  47.         with stations on the ground. But we have some other interesting 
  48.  
  49.         modes which have been included in the TNC code. A meta-beacon 
  50.  
  51.         which will allow loading text messages of up to 1800 characters 
  52.  
  53.         will be available. This will allow the crew to compose mission 
  54.  
  55.         status or SAREX scheduling messages for repeated downlink. A 
  56.  
  57.         robot mode will also be available so that ground stations may 
  58.  
  59.         connect with and receive a reply from the SAREX even when the 
  60.  
  61.         crew is not available to engage in realtime QSO's.

  65.         Although our preparations for the Astro-1 mission are now in full 
  66.  
  67.         swing and I don't always have time to post messages to INFO-HAMS 
  68.  
  69.         I will try and keep the net posted on the project as things 
  70.
