  3. Red Boxing With Whistles by SCAN MAN &
  4. THE RESEARCHER

  6. This article is presented as a news
  7. item only. It is not to be taken as an
  8. encouragement to make fraudulent
  9. telephone calls.

  11. Red boxing consists of simulating the
  12. tones produced when coins are deposited
  13. in a pay phone. Coin tones are beeps of
  14. 2200 Hz + 1700 Hz as follows:

  16. 5 cents - 1 beep, 66 milliseconds
  17. duration.
  18.  
  19. 10 cents - 2 beeps, each 66
  20. milliseconds duration with 66
  21. millisecond pause between beeps.
  22.  
  23. 25 cents - 5 beeps, each 33
  24. milliseconds duration with a 33
  25. millisecond pause between beeps.

  27. Two methods have commonly been used by
  28. phone phreaks to produce these tones
  29. and make free calls.

  31. 1. The traditional Red Box consisting
  32. of a pair of Wien-bridge oscillators
  33. with the timing controlled by 555 timer
  34. chips.

  36. 2. Producing the signals with a
  37. computer which are recorded and then
  38. played back into the mouth piece of a
  39. pay phone.
  40.  
  41. A third method has recently appeared
  42. which is a real mind blower. A phreak
  43. in the Midwest has extensively tested a
  44. method of red boxing which uses nothing
  45. more than a pair of brass or aluminum
  46. whistles. The whistles are 1/4 inch in
  47. diameter by 4 inches long and are tuned
  48. by means of a wooden dowel rod which
  49. fits snugly inside. The whistles can be
  50. brought precisely on frequency by
  51. tuning them against a known signal
  52. source such as a computer capable of
  53. producing the tones. Once tuned, the
  54. whistles are glued or taped together so
  55. they can be blown together to produce
  56. the dual tone used in coin signaling.
  57. It has been tested and proven that with
  58. a little practice these whistles can be
  59. used to make free calls. Now you can
  60. blow your money without spending a
  61. cent.
