  17.         _Search Warrants Served in Computer "Hacking" Scheme_
  18.  
  19. INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Police Department, the Federal Bureau
  20. of Investigation, and the United States Secret Service served search
  21. warrants at five Indianapolis locations on Wednesday, May 29, 1991,
  22. for computer-related equipment. The warrants were served by five teams
  23. of law enforcement officials forming a group known as the Special
  24. Computerized Attack Team (SCAT).

  26. SCAT is a cooperative effort between the Indianapolis Police
  27. Department the FBI, the Secret Service and other federal, state and
  28. local law enforcement agencies aimed at tracking computer "hackers"
  29. who illicitly enter the computer systems of companies in an attempt to
  30. gain sensitive information, money, or company secrets.

  32. The White Collar Crime Unit of IPD obtained information from the FBI
  33. and Secret Service concerning illegal computer access to the PBX
  34. system of an Indianapolis company. Armed with search warrants, SCAT
  35. members confiscated computer equipment from fie Indianapolis residences
  36. which linked several juveniles to the crime. The Indianapolis company
  37. has experienced losses which approach $300,000. A search warrant was
  38. served simultaneously by FBI agents, the Secret Service and Michigan
  39. State Police in West Bloomfield, Michigan, in this same case.

  41. Information gained from the search warrants has led police to continue
  42. the investigation in other cities as well.
  43.  
  44. Suspects in the case are all juveniles and the investigation is
  45. continuing to determine if the evidence collected will support
  46. arrests. The SCAT unit is currently investigating other
  47. computer-related crimes and hopes to send a strong message to computer
  48. "hakers" that their illegal actions are being monitored closely bylaw
  49. enforcement officials.
