He was the ancient god of the woods, pastures, flocks and herds. He had goat hooves and horns on his head. He was a rude and bad-tempered god. He wandered in the woods playing the instrument he invented: the syrinx or flute. He slept at midday, and if disturbed, emitted terrifying noises which caused people to panic.
