Perhaps the most famous of the heroes was Achilles, son of the mortal Peleus and of the goddess of the sea, Thetis. The goddess was beautiful and both Zeus and Poseidon wanted her; a prophecy however had said that her son would be more powerful than his father, therefore the gods decided to have her marry a mortal. As all gods of the sea, Thetis also had the ability to transform and to escape Peleus she changed into a lion, water, fire, and various other sea creatures. At the end she consented to marry Peleus. The wedding gifts from the gods were luxurious.
