Thank you for trying GATLING! (And thanks to all users of version
1.0 for their kind words and suggestions!)
GATLING is a Microsoft Windows 3.0 program which periodically shoots
a spray of bullets across your computer screen, leaving a trail of
bullet holes in your windows. These bullet holes remain on the
screen until the windows are refreshed by Windows itself. This
program has a couple of useful (if frivolous) purposes: if your
tendency is to fall asleep on your keyboard during those long word
processing sessions (or late nights playing Minesweeper), this
program (with sound turned on) will effectively wake you back up
every so often. Better yet, to surprise a colleague who uses
Windows, run this program and hide its icon just before your friend
sits down to work. Then stick around and watch the fun!
The program's normal mode is to blast the screen at time intervals of
about 90 seconds (on average), with a minimum time of 30 seconds
between blasts. This operation can be modified by a command line
parameter, which specifies the desired average interval in seconds.
The minimum interval used will be 1/5th of the average interval
value. Note that each blast can take 2 seconds or more, so an
average value of less than 10 seconds is not recommended!
MENU OPTIONS
This version of Gatling also supports the following system menu
options:
The Refresh option repaints the desktop background and all
application windows (or icons), removing all trace of battle
damage.
The Hide Gatling option hides Gatling's application icon, which
has the side effect of removing this program from the task list.
Note that this will require you to exit Windows in order to
stop Gatling's execution. (In other words, don't leave it
running this way unattended on someone else's machine!)
The Timer Interval option brings up a dialog box that allows
you to change the average time interval between machine gun
blasts. The current timer interval setting is also shown in
the option's menu string.
The Sound Effects option is a switch that allows the (sometimes
annoying) machine gun sound effects to be turned off.
The Small, Medium, and Large Caliber options, taken as a group,
allow you to change size of the bullet holes being sprayed
across your screen. Although any size works on any monitor,
you may find that a certain size is better than the others for
a particular screen resolution.
DISTRIBUTION
I like to call this type of program a Windows "gimmick" since it
exploits a feature of Windows in a harmless, entertaining way,
for no useful purpose. You may want to look for my other Windows
"gimmick", ICOFRITE, which makes your Windows application icons
and windows frightened of the mouse cursor.
This program is Freeware, but if you would like to see more of
this type of program from me (I have ideas for over 20 other
programs like this), please feel free to send any size donation!
If I get a good response, perhaps I'll put together a collection
and call it the "Windows Un-productivity Pack".
This product may be freely distributed providing no modifications or
additions are made to the software, its documentation, or any
associated files, and it is not bundled in a distribution of any
other software except that which is distributed as Shareware or
Freeware.
