-----------------------------------------------------------------
INTRODUCTION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
There are so many ways to implement Aladdin that it can seem
overwhelming at first. Since the manual covers complete usage
quite thoroughly, this exercise attempts to give a new user the
"down and dirty" operation of Aladdin for Roundtable (R/T)
messages and Software Library (S/L) files.
It is assumed that you've read the manual, configured Aladdin,
and successfully logged on already. If you've done all that and
still are perplexed by Aladdin usage, this file is for you! Read
on.
IMPORTANT NOTE: RJM! (Read Juan's Manual).
Juan Jimenez created the manual for Aladdin. It is thorough,
well written, and can answer 98% (unofficial estimate <grin>) of
one's questions. A lot of hard work went into it, and I suggest
you utilize it.
Especially useful in configuring and using Aladdin, is the F1-
HELP key. When in doubt, press F1 at any location within Aladdin
for topical assistance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ROUNDTABLE CONFIGURATION.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[At main menu type F6,A to add a R/T]
[F6,E to edit/check your R/T configuration]
Skip to AUTO PASS 1 OPTIONS if you already have a Roundtable
configured.
GENIE PAGE NUMBER
Enter the number of the R/T you wish to add. Aladdin will
automatically enter the R/T name in the next field, assuming it's
in the GENIE.LST file that came with Aladdin. All the R/T pages
are listed in GENIE.LST, and can be referenced with Aladdin [F3,I
from main menu].
NOTE: Aladdin will only work successfully with R/T sections on
GEnie. Sections such as LiveWire and the Mall should be accessed
with the Index and manually interacted with.
ROUNDTABLE NAME
If this doesn't appear automatically, you have either entered
the wrong number in the above field, or it is not listed. If the
R/T is not listed in the index, but you know it DOES exist, you
should update the index (F3, I, U)
AUTO PASS 1 OPTIONS
Make sure you have your R/T configured for "CD" in this field.
This means that every time you choose AUTO PASS 1 from the MAIN
or ROUNDTABLE menu, Aladdin will go online and check for new
messages and files since you were last online.
AUTO PASS 1 DAYS
For the sake of this walk-through, make sure that the days on the
R/T you wish to do the walk-through with is set for every day
"SuMTuWThFSa". If you have other R/Ts already entered, for the
moment change this field for the other R/Ts so that they will not
include today's day. This is most easily done by pressing the
space bar while in this field. We just want to do this walk-
through with ONE R/T (for simplicity).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
STEP I - PASS 1. GETTING NEW MESSAGES AND FILE DESCRIPTIONS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You're ready to go online. Make sure you are at the main menu
(pressing ESC several times will get you there from anywhere in
Aladdin).
Now press the number 1. Aladdin will logon, get you to your R/T,
and a listing of categories & topics will scroll by, followed by
a listing of files in the library.
When Aladdin is done, you'll be logged off and returned to the
main menu.
MARKING MESSAGES TO BE READ
In general, chevrons will mark R/T operations or actions that are
pending. The >> chevron indicates that you have some operations
to take care of from the Pass 1. The << chevron will appear if
there's something waiting to go out. A <-> mark will appear if
you have both incoming and outgoing operations pending.
Press the letter of the R/T that has the >> chevron to get to
the R/T BBS menu. On this screen, the M-MARK TOPICS FOUND WITH C
option should have a chevron, indicating that you have to choose
to ignore or read some messages. Press M to see the list of new
messages.
An explanation of the options on the bottom of the screen can be
obtained with the F1 Help key. So, you press K to Keep a message
(don't do anything), I to ignore, N to read new messages, etc. As
you enter each letter choice, the cursor will jump to the next
topic until you reach the end (Notice the MSGS column, which tell
you how many messages are new to that topic). If you would have
chosen to do nothing about all topic messages listed, for this
example at least mark one topic to read <N>ew messages or to read
the <L>ast message.
When finished, press ESC to return to the R/T BBS menu. If
you've chosen any option other than KEEP while viewing the new
topic headers, a chevron will be next to O-PERFORM PENDING
OPERATIONS. A diamond will indicate the type of pending
operation below this heading in the menu - in this case it's
DOWNLOAD MARKED TOPICS.
CHECKING THE NEW FILES LISTING
When at the R/T BBS menu press the down arrow key () to get to
the Software Library menu (S/L). If there is no chevron marking
M-CHOOSE FILES TO DOWNLOAD OR BROWSE, then simply there were no
new files to capture for our list. Press J-CHOOSE FROM MAIN FILE
LIST. If a chevron is there, however, press M to display the new
file list.
Working with this list is similar to the way you mark messages to
be read. The most common options used here (again, further
explained with F1-Help) are Browsing a long description,
Downloading, or doing nothing (KEEP). For our example, you are
asked to choose Browse for one file.
Press ESC when done. You are now returned to the S/L menu.
Notice now that there is another diamond under the O-PERFORM
PENDING OPERATIONS heading, next to DOWNLOAD/BROWSE MARKED FILES.
NOTE: If you had other Roundtables configured in Aladdin,
pressing the right and left arrows would take you to the next or
previous R/T, respectively. Once you've gone through all your
Roundtables, the Mail menu would appear. If you see a chevron
in this menu you have mail to read, or a pending action to send
mail is indicated (this chevron would also be visible at the Main
Menu).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
STEP II - AUTO PASS 2. PERFORM PENDING ACTIONS.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
ESC-ing until you return to the main menu, press "2". Aladdin
will go online, get the new messages marked, browse that file you
marked, and go offline leaving you at the main menu again.
READING CAPTURED MESSAGES
You will see a chevron at the R/T indicating that something needs
to be tended to. Press the letter of that R/T.
First, check the new messages captured by pressing R in the BBS
menu. Use the right/left arrow keys to page through the
messages. If a message is longer than the screen, the up/down
arrow keys will scroll the message so you can read all of it.
REPLYING TO MESSAGES
If you decide to reply to a message displayed, simply press R.
You'll be put into the message reply editing screen. The top of
the screen will display the first few lines of the message you
are replying to, and a box in the center of the screen is your
editing screen. You can refer to the original message by
scrolling it up/down with the F5/F6 keys respectively. F1 will
bring up an Editor Help Screen if you need.
Type in your reply. When done, ESC will save your message and
you can continue reading the rest of the messages downloaded.
When finished reading these messages, ESC will put you back in
the R/T BBS menu.
CHECKING THE BROWSE (long description) OF A FILE
Press the down arrow to get to the S/L. The M-DOWNLOAD/BROWSE
MARKED FILES will be marked with the chevron. Press M, and
you'll be shown the long description of the file you marked
previously.
From here, you can decide to download it, save the description
for future reference, or just do nothing. AGAIN, F1 Help will
give further assistance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
STEP III - PASS 2. UPLOADING REPLIES/DOWNLOADING FILES.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From here press ESC until you are back at the main menu. If you
have pending operations to take care of (did you reply to a
message or choose to download that file?), press "2" to go back
online and Aladdin will do it all for you. When Aladdin is
finished, it will sign off for you as usual. If you've taken
care of all pending operations, no chevrons will appear at the
main menu. You are all done!
> CLOSING.
Still here? Great! This is a typical session for one
Roundtable. It takes three separate logons for GEnie to
complete. This may seem tedious, but it is quite simple and
really saves you money! All the time you've spent marking,
reading, and replying has been while you've been offline, free of
GEnie charges (not to mention your telephone bill).
REMINDER: If you changed the AUTO PASS 1 DAYS configuration in
any R/Ts for this walk-through, change them back now.
