- Welcome to Dream Nature!
-
- Dream Nature is a sound and graphics demo that requires at least a 386 to
- run, though my 486/33DX is barely enough to run the program with soundblaster
- sound at 12khz. (Yes, I know direct output to the soundblaster is not as
- efficient as DMA, I'm still working on that). Dream Nature will load as
- much of it's data (including the music if you have selected a sound card) as
- it can into low DOS memory. What it can not fit will be loaded into XMS.
- If you have over 600,000 bytes free in DOS, you may not need to worry about
- the XMS, otherwise you will need it.
-
- Dream nature will run forever (unless you press escape or 'Q'). The first
- time you run the demo, the tables will created and stored on disk. On later
- runs the tables will simply be loaded from disk. If you don't have a math
- coprocessor, the process of creating the tables may take a LONG time...
-
- This is somehwat of an artistic statement, though to some of you it may
- be obvious which other demo provided me with the inspiration for this
- program.
-
- There are a whole bunch of keys you can press during the demo to get the
- effects you want, and there are also several command line parameters with
- which you can customize the program (sorta).
-
- Parameters:
-
- /F# - Sets the number of flyers (# = number of flyers) [0-32]
- /L - Toggles "Low Resolution" (defaults to off)
- /R - Toggles "Lens on top" (defaults to on)
- /N - Toggles "Text on screen" (defaults to off)
- /S - Toggles "Smoothing" (defaults to off)
- /D# - Specifies sound device (0=None, 1=SB, 2=Adlib, 3=PC-Speaker)
- /M# - Specifies mixing rate (see chart below)
- /P# - Specifies musical selection to use (1="Dream Nature"
- 2="WormHole")
-
- Mixing rates:
- 0 - 4,000hz (worst sound)
- 1 - 6,000hz
- 2 - 8,000hz (try this if too slow)
- 3 - 10,000hz
- 4 - 11,000hz (default)
- 5 - 12,000hz
- 6 - 14,000hz
- 7 - 16,000hz (best sound, slowest graphics)
-
-
- Keys during demo:
-
- C - Change icon for all flyers
- B - Change current background update
- [ - Decrement number of flyers
- ] - Increment number of flyers
- T - Toggle "Text on screen"
- R - Toggle between low-res and hi-res.
- S - Toggle "Smoothing"
- I - Initiate a lens effect
- L - Toggle "Lenses on top"
- F - Toggle "Synchronized flapping" (defaults to off)
- ! - Quick Exit.
- Spacebar- Go to next background display...
-
- Notes-
- * "Text on screen" defaults to off simply because it makes for a better
- screen-saver.
- * The "Smoothing" effect makes things considerably clearer in certain
- background types, but causes obvious vaggedness in others. Therefore
- you will have to choose for yourself which way you prefer it.
