- XMAS GIFTS
- Shareware, version 1.00
- Copyright (c) 1994, My Cat Software
- All Rights Reserved
-
-
- To play XMAS GIFTS, you need:
-
- Windows 3.x or higher
- 800 x 600 resolution (SVGA) or better
- Mouse
- the file VBRUN300.DLL (available on most BBSs) in your
- WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
-
- Because the game uses lots of graphics, which eat up
- Windows resources, it is best to close the maximum number of
- other Windows application before running it. The game plays
- full screen, but you can always minimize the form: GIFTS will
- not resize itself, but you will be able to do other things.
-
-
- TO INSTALL:
- ----------
-
- There is no automatic INSTALL or SETUP...
-
- You can put XMASGIFT.EXE where you want on your hard disk, but these
- three files have to be either in the same directory as XMASGIFT.EXE
- or in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory:
-
- MHCM200.VBX, MHDES200.DLL, MHRUN200.DLL
-
- XMAS GIFTS will create its own (very small) XMASGIFT.INI file in
- your Windows directory the first time you run it.
-
-
-
- TO RUN:
- ------
-
- You can do it from the "Run" item in the Program Manager's File
- menu, or install it in one of your Program Manager Groups by
- choosing "New" in the Program Manager File menu and filling the
- information. You will then be able to click on the game's icon to
- run the program.
-
-
- SAFETY MEASURES:
- ---------------
-
- Because children have a tendency to touch everything, there are
- two ways to exit the game: for the child, a big Exit button
- appears only between each game; for the parent who needs the
- computer "now", the F7 key will do the same at all time. A
- warning message with Yes/No buttons appears in both cases.
-
- And because young children cannot read, only the parent will
- know that F1 accesses the Help.
-
-
-
- DOCS
-
-
- So that you can see what you get before installing XMAS GIFTS,
- here are the complete docs (identical to the Help in the game):
-
- . HOW TO PLAY
-
- Gifts are hidden in a Christmas tree. Click on the tree
- squares to find them.
-
- There are two levels, a very easy one for small children
- (5 gifts, graphic clues), and one requiring more skill, for older
- kids (9 gifts, number clues). The current level is shown by a
- picture card, identified by a big "L", at the bottom right of the
- tree base.
-
- The card at the bottom left, with a "W" (for Who Places the
- gifts), shows the current game Mode, "My Computer" or "My
- Friend".
-
- There is no time limit, but for each clicked square the blind
- comes down, slowly hiding the view from the window. And there are
- no points...
-
- When all the gifts have been found, the tree lights up, and the
- child is offered a chance to Play again, to Exit the game, or to
- change the Who mode or the Level.
-
- The current Level is saved when GIFTS ends, but not the current
- Who-Mode: the game always starts in "Computer" Mode.
-
-
- . LEVELS
-
- 5 Gifts of Varying Sizes (default)
- ----------------------------------
- Gifts: one small equal to one tree square, one big hidden behind
- four squares, and three measuring one square by two,
- three or four squares, which can be either horizontal or
- vertical.
-
- Clues: the clicked square becomes red if a gift is hidden there:
- continue to click until it is all revealed. If the four
- bigger gifts have been found but not the small one, clicking on
- tree squares located in the same row or column will reveal arrows
- pointing towards it.
-
- 9 Gifts, All Small
- ------------------
- This level, which resembles Minesweeper, requires more skill.
- But if the child cannot read the numbers yet, she can still play
- by clicking at random, there are no bombs here!
-
- Gifts: They are all equal to one square.
-
- Clues: If there is one or more gifts immediately around the
- clicked square, their total number appears in the
- square. If there are none, all the adjoining squares
- not uncovered yet are automatically "clicked" (unlike
- Minesweeper, the sweep applies only to the immediate
- area).
-
-
- . GAME MODES
-
- My Computer
- -----------
-
- The computer hides the gifts before each game.
-
- My Friend
- ---------
- The child or her friend places the gifts manually on the tree.
- Before each new game, "Santa's Shop" will open , with all the
- gifts neatly arranged on its shelves. The child who plays next
- should close her eyes before her friend starts to place the gifts
- in the tree!
-
- Choosing a gift is done by clicking, then releasing, the left
- mouse button: a shadow of the gift will stick to the mouse
- pointer when the child starts to move it towards the tree.
-
- Placing the gift in the tree is done by clicking on the tree
- at the desired place (a grid is drawn on it to make it easier).
- When a gift is in the tree, it can be moved anywhere on it, or
- even taken back to the shop if the child changes her mind (like
- changing an horizontal gift for a vertical).
-
- For the three long gifts in the "5 gifts" level, the child
- must choose between the vertical or the horizontal one: the other
- gift of the same size will then also disappear from the shelf.
-
- All the gifts need to be placed in the tree before the shop's
- "Play" button is enabled. Clicking it will close the shop and
- show the tree squares.
-
- Santa's Shop can be cancelled at any time while it is open.

- SHAREWARE INFORMATION
-
-
- XMAS GIFTS was written by a big girl for all children, but
- it probably will appeal more to little girls, since women
- apparently prefer logical games. For that reason, Help uses "she"
- and "her" instead of "he" and "his", with my excuses to those who
- might be offended...
-
- If your child enjoys the game, a small contribution of $20 US
- ($20 Cdn if you live in Canada) would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Please send it to:

-
- If you are not Canadian, a money order (US/UK) or a bank draft
- (other countries) is the best way to send money. Thanks.

- NOTE TO VISUAL BASIC PROGRAMMERS:
- ---------------------------------
-
- You can use the MHCM200.VBX tool in your own programs; it is a
- Custom Command Button with the added Properties of PictureUp,
- PictureDown and StateButton (to keep a button pressed or not
- after the mouse is released).
-
- I got these files with another program which I am still unable to
- run, so I don't know who wrote them, and if they can be
- distributed freely.
