  7. This version introduces several new features:  metric measurements, 
  8. low-resolution color graphics support, zoom by keystroke.  It also contains 
  9. many refinements, particularly in track drawing and editing.  Version 1.31 
  10. introduces dynamic track length display, as you draw or edit.
  11.  
  12. Additional information about this version is documented in an upgrade 
  13. booklet which accompanies the disk.  If you did not receive a booklet, 
  14. please contact Abracadata.

  17. METRIC
  18. ------
  19. Choose metric vs. English measurements on the Track/Scale menu.  When 
  20. METRIC is in effect, all input and output of both layout and scale 
  21. measurements are in meters; page measurements on the Print Settings menu 
  22. are in cm.  To make the choice permanent, edit the "metric" line in 
  23. SETTINGS.DEF.  (You might want to adjust the "grid_size" value also).

  26. NEW VIDEO CHOICES
  27. -----------------
  28. The program will now operate in 320 X 200 video modes, including 4-color 
  29. CGA and 16-color Tandy.  CGA users: you can adjust the "cga_colors" setting 
  30. in SETTINGS.DEF to choose any of 16 background colors, and either of two 
  31. foreground palettes.  Tandy users: the install program will not detect your 
  32. hardware automatically, you need to choose it from the list.

  35. F7 ZOOM/UNZOOM
  36. --------------
  37. After you zoom once using the Track/Scale menu, F7 will now toggle between 
  38. that view and the standard view.  You can use arrow keys to move around the 
  39. zoomed view, and F7 will "remember" where you are.  Try it, you'll like it!

  41.  
  42. TRACK EDITING
  43. -------------
  44. Version 1.3 features a new, fast routine for drawing curves, a new 
  45. mechanism for preventing track tangling, and now a way to UNDO a move.
  46.  
  47. Here's how it works.  When you are editing curved track, and attempt to 
  48. move where the track cannot go, a highlight appears at the spot where you 
  49. moved out of bounds.  You are then dragging a dotted line connected to that 
  50. spot, and the track is frozen until you move back to it.  Keeping the mouse 
  51. button down, position to the highlight; the track will "unfreeze" and 
  52. resume following the pointer.

  54. When you are dragging the dotted line, move the mouse pointer OFF THE 
  55. SCREEN before releasing the button, and the move will UNDO itself.  The 
  56. track will revert to its original position.

  78. SETTINGS.DEF
  79. ------------
  80. This file is created during install.  It contains information about your 
  81. hardware choices, plus initial settings for all the option menus.  If you 
  82. have trouble getting the program to run, look at SETTINGS.DEF and verify 
  83. that the information at the top is correct.
  84.  
  85. You can edit this file to change settings.  Documentation is in the file 
  86. itself for all items except these:

  144. The program looks for SETTINGS.DEF in your current directory, and then in a 
  145. directory specified in environmental variable "RR".  If you want to be able 
  146. to run the program from anywhere on your hard disk:
  147.  
  148. 1.  Move RR.EXE to a directory on your path.
  149. 2.  Include in your AUTOEXEC.BAT a line of the form SET RR=<dir>, where 
  150.     <dir> is the directory containing SETTINGS.DEF.
  151.

  153. INSTALLING WITH A SINGLE DISK DRIVE
  154. -----------------------------------
  155. If you have only one disk drive, the installation program does not work 
  156. well.  You can install manually as described below, or you can call 
  157. Abracadata for a set of pre-installed disks.
  158.  
  159. To install manually:
  160.  
  161. 1.  Format three 5.25" 360K disks, one labelled PROGRAM, one DATA, and one 
  162.     for scratch. (If you have a 720K or higher capacity drive, use one disk 
  163.     for both PROGRAM and DATA).
  164.  
  165. 2.  Copy RFILES.EXE to the scratch disk, then uncompress it by making the
  166.     scratch disk the default disk and typing RFILES.
  167.  
  168. 3.  Copy these files from the scratch to the PROGRAM disk:  DEPOTS.DEF,
  169.     LOADS.DEF, ROMANSIM.FNT, ROMANTRI.FNT, and the appropriate ONE of: 
  170.     SYSTEM08.FNT (CGA), SYSTEM16.FNT (EGA), SYSTEM72.FNT (VGA, MCGA), 
  171.     SYSTEM24.FNT (Hercules), SYSTEM32.FNT (AT&T).
  172.  
  173. 4.  Erase the scratch disk.  Insert the distribution disk, type PROGS B: to 
  174.     uncompress directly onto the scratch disk.  Be prepared to do a lot of 
  175.     disk swapping!
  176.  
  177. 5.  Copy RR.EXE from the scratch to the PROGRAM disk.  
  178.  
  179. 6.  Copy PRINTERS.DEF from the distribution disk to the PROGRAM disk.
  180.  
  181. 7.  Copy DFILES.EXE to the DATA disk, then type DFILES.  After the 
  182.     files are uncompressed, erase DFILES.EXE.
  183.  
  184. 8.  Copy either CPCX.EXE (CGA, Tandy), EPCX.EXE (EGA, Hercules) or VPCX.EXE 
  185.     (VGA, MCGA) to the DATA disk, then type the appropriate name (CPCX, 
  186.     EPCX or VPCX). After the files are uncompressed, erase the .EXE file.

  188. 9.  You now need to create the SETTINGS.DEF file on the PROGRAM disk.  You 
  189.     can do this by running INSTALL, or using a text editor.
  190.  
  191.     To create the file with a text editor, enter the following lines:
  192.  
  193.        RR_directory       = A:
  194.        RR_files           = A:
  195.        video_board        = <video>
  196.        printer            = <printer>
  197.        system_font        = <font>
  198.  
  199.     where the items in brackets are described in the section above. Then 
  200.     append either SETTINGS.STD (for color systems) or SETTINGS.BW 
  201.     (monochrome), both of which are found on the distribution disk.  A 
  202.     sample completed SETTINGS.DEF looks like this:

  215.     To create the file using INSTALL, copy these files to a scratch 
  216.     disk:  INSTALL.EXE, PRINTERS.DEF, SETTINGS.STD, SETTINGS.BW.
  217.     Then type INSTALL to run the program, giving drive A as both source and
  218.     destination.  When asked if you are installing on two floppy drives,
  219.     answer Y.  Answer the questions about video adapter, mouse, etc.
  220.     When prompted to enter a blank disk, ignore it and press any key.
  221.     Ignore error messages, and press CTRL-C when prompted to enter 
  222.     another disk.  You should then find a valid SETTINGS.DEF file on 
  223.     the disk; copy it to your PROGRAM disk.

  226. DESIGN YOUR OWN TRAIN FILES
  227. ---------------------------
  228. Included on the 720K distribution disk is a program called RCONVERT.EXE for 
  229. converting layout files created in Design Your Own Train for use in Design 
  230. Your Own Railroad. (If you received a 5.25" 360K distribution disk, you 
  231. will need to call Abracadata to receive a copy of RCONVERT.EXE.)  This 
  232. program converts only the track --- no scenery, buildings, trains, or 
  233. depots.
  234.  
  235. RCONVERT works on only a single file at a time.  To use it, copy the .LYT 
  236. file to be converted into your current directory, then type:
  237.  
  238.     RCONVERT <filename.LYT>
  239.  
  240. RCONVERT creates an output file named <filename.RR>, ready to read into 
  241. Design Your Own Railroad. 
  242.  
  243. If you want to convert more than one file, you can use a FOR loop, as 
  244. described in your DOS manual.  For example:
  245.
