CHESS HOCKEY (TM) IS A BOARD GAME FOR HOCKEY FANS. GO AVALANCHE! (GRIN)
IT HAS THE ABSTRACT BOARD GAME (PERFECT INFORMATION) QUALITY OF CHESS, MIXED
WITH THE FLAVOR OF HOCKEY. CHESS SOCCER (TM) IS ALSO IMPLEMENTED.
BOARD SIZES:
THE BOARD SIZE IS NOMINALLY 8 ROWS BY 5 COLUMNS, BUT MAY BE CHANGED TO ANYTHING
UP TO 8 X 8.
*NOTE: IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION YOU ARE LIMITED TO 8 X 5.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS:
YOU CAN SET THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL AS ANY NUMBER FROM 1 (EASIEST) TO 9 (HARDEST);
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN FORCE IT TO QUIT SEARCHING AND TAKE THE
CURRENT BEST MOVE BY HITTING THE ESC KEY. (NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY GO TO LEVEL 1 IN
THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION).
MODES & PIECES:
EACH PLAYER HAS 2 OR MORE ATTACKER PIECES, 2 OR MORE DEFENDER PIECES, AND A
GOALIE (GOALKEEPER). ALSO, THERE IS A PUCK (FOOTBALL) PIECE. THE DISCUSSION
BELOW WILL BE COUCHED IN HOCKEY TERMS FOR CONVENIENCE.
THERE ARE TWO MODES: HOCKEY MODE AND SOCCER MODE. IN HOCKEY MODE THERE ARE
5 PIECES PLUS A GOALIE PIECE ON EACH SIDE. IN SOCCER MODE THERE ARE 6 PIECES
PLUS A GOALKEEPER PIECE ON EACH SIDE (SO-CALLED 7-MAN SOCCER RATHER THAN THE
STANDARD 11-MAN SOCCER). IN HOCKEY MODE EACH SIDE GETS TO CHOOSE WHETHER IT
WANTS 3 ATTACKERS AND 2 DEFENDERS, OR 2 ATTACKERS AND 3 DEFENDERS.
THE OPENING SETUP IS AS FOLLOWS (FOR 8 X 5 BOARD). ELIMINATE THE ATTACKER OR
DEFENDER IN THE MIDDLE COLUMN IF THERE ARE ONLY TWO INSTEAD OF THREE.
WHITE:
GOALIE C1; DEFENDERS B2, C2, D2; ATTACKERS B3, C3, D3.
BLACK:
GOALIE C8; DEFENDERS B7, C7, D7; ATTACKERS B6, C6, D6.
PUCK:
C4
OBJECT:
THE OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO SLAP THE PUCK INTO A VACANT SQUARE IN THE OPPOSING
GOALIE'S ROW.
FIRST PLAYER:
BLACK ALWAYS MOVES FIRST.
GOALIES:
THE FIRST AND LAST RANK OF THE BOARD MAY ONLY BE USED BY THE GOALIES. THE
GOALIES ONLY MOVE HORIZONTALLY, I.E., THEY CANNOT LEAVE THEIR OWN ROWS AND
CANNOT SLAP THE PUCK. THE MAIN OBJECT OF THE GOALIES IS TO BLOCK THE PUCK.
ATTACKERS & DEFENDERS:
ATTACKERS AND DEFENDERS MOVE IN THE SAME WAY, BUT CAN SLAP THE PUCK IN
DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. WHEN THEY DO NOT PLAY THE PUCK, AN ATTACKER OR DEFENDER
MOVES LIKE A QUEEN, BUT CANNOT TAKE OTHER PIECES. WHEN AN ATTACKER OR DEFENDER
WANTS TO SLAP THE PUCK HE MUST BE A SQUARE AWAY FROM THE PUCK, AND THEN MOVE TO
THE SQUARE CONTAINING THE PUCK... IN THE SAME TURN, THE PUCK MUST BE SLAPPED:
DEFENDERS SLAP THE PUCK DIAGONALLY (LIKE A BISHOP), BUT ONLY IN FORWARD (TOWARD
THE GOAL) DIRECTIONS, AND ATTACKERS SLAP THE PUCK HORIZONTALLY OR VERTICALLY
(LIKE A ROOK), IN ALL 4 DIRECTIONS. THE PUCK MUST BE SLAPPED TO AN EMPTY
SQUARE, AND CAN ONLY PASS OVER EMPTY SQUARES.
MOVES:
ON EACH TURN PLAYERS MOVE ONE OF THEIR PIECES, POSSIBLY ALSO SLAPPING THE PUCK
WITH THAT PIECE, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE.
GAME:
A PLAYER WINS THE GAME BY SLAPPING THE PUCK TO AN EMPTY SQUARE ON THE
OPPONENT'S LAST ROW.
*NOTE: IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION THE PROGRAM EXITS AFTER EACH
GAME. PURCHASE THE FULL VERSION AND FEEL BETTER (GRIN).
DRAWS:
A DRAW RESULTS BY AGREEMENT. IF A PLAYER OFFERS HIS OPPONENT A DRAW, HE MAY
ACCEPT, OR HE MAY REFUSE, BUT IF THE REFUSER PLAYS 10 MOVES WITHOUT A WIN, THE
DRAW IS AUTOMATIC.
TO ENTER A MOVE:
JUST TYPE THE PLAYER MOVE IN, ROW (1..8) THEN COL (1..8). OR USE YOUR MOUSE AND
POINT AND CLICK. NOTE: ROW 1 IS AT THE TOP, AND COL 1 IS AT THE LEFT.
THEN IF THERE IS SLAP, TYPE IN THE PUCK DESTINATION ROW (1..8), THEN COL (1..8).
OR USE YOUR MOUSE AND POINT AND CLICK.
TO REFUSE TO SLAP THE PUCK JUST GIVE THE PUCK A DESTINATION THE SAME AS ITS
CURRENT POSITION.
TO OFFER A DRAW TO THE OPPONENT, HIT THE "D" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO RESIGN (FORFEIT THE GAME), HIT THE "R" KEY OR "F" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO ABORT A GAME IN PROGRESS, HIT THE "Q" KEY OR THE "X" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
QUICK DRAW:
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN HIT THE "!" KEY TO CAUSE IT TO QUIT
IMMEDIATELY AND DECLARE A DRAW.
NO BACK SLAPS/KICKS:
AS AN OPTION, BACKWARD (AWAY FROM GOAL) SLAPS BY ATTACKERS CAN BE PROHIBITED.

THE 10 FUNCTION KEYS F1-F10 HAVE THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS:

F9 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE "BLACK" PIECES.
F10 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE SCREEN BORDER COLOR.
NOTE FOR "TOGGLES": THE LEGEND DISPLAYED ONSCREEN WILL BE THE MODE THAT WILL
BE ACTIVATED IF THE FUNCTION KEY IS PRESSED.
ARROW KEYS:
THE UP/DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD CHANGE THE GAME SPEED. THE MINIMUM
AMOUNT OF TIME, IN SECONDS, THAT THE COMPUTER WILL TAKE TO THINK UP A MOVE, OR
TO MAKE EACH HOP, IS DISPLAYED NEAR THE LOWER RIGHTHAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS:
S START UP WITH SOUND OFF
M FORCE MONO DISPLAY MODE
C FORCE COLOR DISPLAY MODE
D DISABLE MOUSE CHECK
