TOMMY'S CHECKERS PLAYS STANDARD CHECKERS WITH VARIANTS. YOU CAN CHANGE THE
SIZE OF THE BOARD AND TAKE ONE PIECE AWAY AT STARTUP.
AND V.2 NOW FEATURES TOMMY'S WECKERS <TM>.
THIS VARIANT GIVES THE LIGHTWEIGHT GAME OF CHECKERS SOME REAL WEIGHT!
WEIGHTS THAT IS... EACH CHECKERS PIECE GETS A WEIGHT FROM 1 TO 6.
BOARD SIZES:
THE BOARD SIZE CAN BE SELECTED AS 6 OR 8 ROWS, AND 6 OR 8 COLUMNS.
*NOTE: IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION YOU ARE LIMITED TO 8 X 8 ALWAYS.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS:
YOU CAN SET THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL AS ANY NUMBER FROM 1 (EASIEST) TO 9 (HARDEST);
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN FORCE IT TO QUIT SEARCHING AND TAKE THE
CURRENT BEST MOVE BY HITTING THE ESC KEY. (NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY GO TO LEVEL
2 IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION).
RULES:
EACH PLAYER GETS AN ARMY OF PAWNS, ENOUGH TO COVER THE BACK 2 ROWS AT LEAST,
AND THE BACK 3 IF THE BOARD HAS ENOUGH ROWS (12 FOR A STANDARD 8 X 8 BOARD).
THEY MUST ALWAYS REMAIN ON THE BLACK SQUARES. IN WECKERS MODE THE COMPUTER
SHUFFLES THE PAWNS BEFORE PLACING THEM ON THE BOARD INITIALLY, BUT KEEPS EACH
SIDE'S WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION THE EXACT SAME.
TAKE-ONE OPTION:
WHEN THIS OPTION IS SET THE COMPUTER WILL RANDOMLY REMOVE ONE PIECE FROM EACH
PLAYER'S ARMY IN CORRESPONDING BOARD POSITIONS.
FIRST PLAYER:
BLACK ALWAYS MOVES FIRST.
PIECES AND MOVES:
A PIECE CAN EITHER BE A PAWN OR A KING. IN WECKERS MODE IT ALSO HAS A WEIGHT
FROM 1 TO 6: A PAWN PROMOTED TO A KING KEEPS THE SAME WEIGHT.
A PAWN CAN ONLY MOVE FORWARD, DIAGONALLY.
A KING CAN MOVE IN ALL 4 DIAGONAL DIRECTIONS.
A PAWN THAT ADVANCES TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE BOARD IS AUTOMATICALLY KINGED.
CAPTURING:
PIECES CAN ONLY MOVE A DISTANCE OF ONE SQUARE, UNLESS THERE IS AN ENEMY PIECE
NEXT TO IT, AND AN EMPTY SQUARE ON THE OTHER SIDE, WHEREUPON IT MAY HOP THE
ENEMY PIECE, CAPTURING IT (TAKING IT OFF THE BOARD).
YOU MUST ALWAYS TAKE AN OPPONENT'S PIECE IF POSSIBLE ON YOUR TURN. IF YOU HAVE
MORE THAN ONE CHOICE OF PIECES TO TAKE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE THE ONE THAT
LEADS TO THE MOST TAKES, AS IN SPANISH CHECKERS, BUT YOU CANNOT STOP MOVING
UNTIL THERE ARE NO MORE PIECES AVAILABLE TO TAKE.
SCORING IN WECKERS:
THE PLAYER DOING THE HOPPING THEN SCORES THE ABSOLUTE DIFFERENCE IN WEIGHTS
BETWEEN HIS PIECE AND THE PIECE(S) HOPPED, REGARDLESS OF WHICH SIDE'S WEIGHTS
ARE LARGER.
7/11 WECKERS OPTION:
IF THIS OPTION IS SET, IF THE HOPPING AND HOPPED PIECE WEIGHTS ADD TO 7 OR 11,
THE PLAYER SCORES THAT VALUE INSTEAD OF THE DIFFERENCE.
GAME:
IN STANDARD CHECKERS, IF A PLAYER ON HIS TURN IS UNABLE TO MOVE, HE LOSES.
IN WECKERS, ONCE A PLAYER IS UNABLE TO MOVE ON HIS TURN, THE GAME ENDS AND THE
WINNER IS THE PLAYER WITH THE HIGHEST SCORE.
DRAWS:
A DRAW RESULTS BY AGREEMENT. IF A PLAYER OFFERS HIS OPPONENT A DRAW, HE MAY
ACCEPT, OR HE MAY REFUSE, BUT IF THE REFUSER PLAYS 10 MOVES WITHOUT AN INCREASE
IN HIS ADVANTAGE, THE DRAW IS AUTOMATIC. IN WECKERS, THE WINNER IS THE ONE WITH
THE HIGHEST SCORE: ONLY IF THEY HAVE THE SAME SCORE IS THERE A TRUE DRAW.
TO ENTER A MOVE:
JUST TYPE THE MOVE IN, ROW (1..8) THEN COL (1..8). OR USE YOUR MOUSE AND
POINT AND CLICK. NOTE: ROW 1 IS AT THE TOP, AND COL 1 IS AT THE LEFT.
TO OFFER A DRAW TO THE OPPONENT, HIT THE "D" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO RESIGN (FORFEIT THE GAME), HIT THE "R" KEY OR "F" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO ABORT A GAME IN PROGRESS, HIT THE "Q" KEY OR THE "X" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
QUICK DRAW:
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN HIT THE "!" KEY TO CAUSE IT TO QUIT
IMMEDIATELY AND DECLARE A DRAW.
WECKERS TWO:
IN THIS VARIANT, YOU SCORE ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE PIECE THAT YOU ARE TAKING,
NOT THE DIFFERENCE, AND THERE IS NO 7/11 SCORING. WHEN YOUR PAWN REACHES THE
KING ROW IT IS TAKEN FROM THE BOARD AND SCORED FOR YOUR SIDE. FIRST PLAYER TO
REACH GAME POINT WINS. GAME POINT IS SELECTED AS ANY MULTIPLE OF TEN UP TO
THE TOTAL OF WEIGHTS INITIALLY ON THE BOARD.
LITE WECKERS OR WECKERS TWO OPTION:
WHEN THIS OPTION IS SET A PIECE CAN ONLY TAKE AN ENEMY PIECE THAT IS OF THE
SAME OR LESSER WEIGHT, E.G., A 6 CAN TAKE ANYTHING, BUT A 5 CAN ONLY TAKE A
1, 2, 3, 4, OR 5.
FUNCTION KEYS:
THE 10 FUNCTION KEYS F1-F10 HAVE THE FOLLOWING FUNCTIONS:

F7 DECREASE THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL.
F8 INCREASE THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL.
F6 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE "WHITE" PIECES.
F9 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE "BLACK" PIECES.
F10 (COLOR MONITORS ONLY) CHANGE THE SCREEN BORDER COLOR.
NOTE FOR "TOGGLES": THE LEGEND DISPLAYED ONSCREEN WILL BE THE MODE THAT WILL
BE ACTIVATED IF THE FUNCTION KEY IS PRESSED.
ARROW KEYS:
THE UP/DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD CHANGE THE GAME SPEED. THE MINIMUM
AMOUNT OF TIME, IN SECONDS, THAT THE COMPUTER WILL TAKE TO THINK UP A MOVE, OR
TO MAKE EACH HOP, IS DISPLAYED NEAR THE LOWER RIGHTHAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS:
S START UP WITH SOUND OFF
M FORCE MONO DISPLAY MODE
C FORCE COLOR DISPLAY MODE
D DISABLE MOUSE CHECK
