LINES-OF-ACTION IS A BOARD GAME OF THE SAME GENERAL TYPE AS CHECKERS, OTHELLO,
AND GO, BUT WITH ITS OWN BRAND OF FUN. INVENTED IN 1969 BY CLAUDE SOUCIE, IT
HAS REMAINED ON THE FRINGES OF EARTHLING GAMING EVEN THOUGH ALMOST EVERYBODY
ENCOUNTERING IT, USUALLY AT ELITIST UNIVERSITIES, HAS ENJOYED IT. NOW IT CAN
BE PLAYED BY THE MASSES BECAUSE IT'S A TOMMY'S TOY (TM)!
BOARD SIZES:
THE BOARD SIZE CAN BE SELECTED AS ANYTHING FROM 6 TO 8 ROWS, AND 6 TO 8 COLUMNS.
*NOTE: IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION YOU ARE LIMITED TO 8 X 8 ALWAYS.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS:
YOU CAN SET THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL AS ANY NUMBER FROM 1 (EASIEST) TO 9 (HARDEST);
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN FORCE IT TO QUIT SEARCHING AND TAKE THE
CURRENT BEST MOVE BY HITTING THE ESC KEY. (NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY GO TO LEVEL 1 IN
THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION).
RULES:
PAWNS AND INITIAL POSITION:
EACH PLAYER GETS AN ARMY OF PAWNS. IN THE STANDARD GAME THE BLACK PAWNS ARE
PLACED IN TWO ROWS ALONG THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE BOARD, AND THE WHITE PAWNS
ARE PLACED IN TWO COLUMNS ALONG THE LEFT AND RIGHT OF THE BOARD.
OBJECT:
THE OBJECT OF THE GAME IS TO MOVE YOUR PAWNS UNTIL THEY FORM A SINGLE CONNECTED
POOL OR GROUP, THAT IS, NO 'HOLES'.
FIRST PLAYER:
BLACK ALWAYS MOVES FIRST.
MOVES:
ON EACH TURN A PLAYER HOPS ONE PAWN IN A STRAIGHT LINE IN ANY OF THE 8
DIRECTIONS, AS MANY SQUARES AS THERE ARE PAWNS OF ANY COLOR ALONG THE LINE OF
ACTION (GET IT? HA HA). A PLAYER MAY HOP OVER A PAWN OF HIS OWN COLOR BUT
NOT OVER AN ENEMY PAWN. A PLAYER MAY LAND ON AN ENEMY PAWN, CAPTURING IT.
FOR EXAMPLE, IF A ROW HAS 2 BLACK AND 1 WHITE PAWN, THEN A PLAYER CAN ONLY
MOVE HIS PAWN ALONG THAT ROW A DISTANCE OF 3 SQUARES, AND ONLY IF THERE IS
A VACANT SPACE OR ENEMY PAWN TO HOP ONTO, AND AN ENEMY PAWN IS NOT BEING
PASSED TO DO IT.
GAME:
FIRST PLAYER TO REDUCE HIS PAWNS TO ONE GROUP WINS. IF PLAYER A CAPTURES
PLAYER B'S SECOND-TO-LAST PAWN, REDUCING PLAYER B TO ONE PAWN, THEN PLAYER
B WINS BECAUSE ALL HIS PAWNS ARE IN A SINGLE GROUP. IF A MOVE SIMULTANEOUSLY
CREATES A WIN FOR BOTH PLAYERS (CAUSING BOTH ARMIES TO CONSOLIDATE INTO SINGLE
GROUPS), THE PLAYER MOVING WINS.
*NOTE* IN THE UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION THE PROGRAM EXITS AFTER EACH
GAME. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT PAY FOR THE FULL VERSION, WE WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE
IT (HA HA).
DRAWS:
A DRAW RESULTS BY AGREEMENT. IF A PLAYER OFFERS HIS OPPONENT A DRAW, HE MAY
ACCEPT, OR HE MAY REFUSE, BUT IF THE REFUSER PLAYS 10 MOVES WITHOUT A WIN, THE
DRAW IS AUTOMATIC.
TO ENTER A MOVE:
JUST TYPE THE MOVE IN, ROW (1..8) THEN COL (1..8). OR USE YOUR MOUSE AND
POINT AND CLICK. NOTE: ROW 1 IS AT THE TOP, AND COL 1 IS AT THE LEFT.
TO OFFER A DRAW TO THE OPPONENT, HIT THE "D" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO RESIGN (FORFEIT THE GAME), HIT THE "R" KEY OR "F" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO ABORT A GAME IN PROGRESS, HIT THE "Q" KEY OR THE "X" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
QUICK DRAW:
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN HIT THE "!" KEY TO CAUSE IT TO QUIT
IMMEDIATELY AND DECLARE A DRAW.
SCRAMBLED EGGS OPENING:
IN THIS OPENING THE BLACK AND WHITE PAWNS ARE ALTERNATED ALONG THE TOP, BOTTOM,
LEFT, AND RIGHT.
PARACHUTE OPTION:
IN THIS VARIATION OF THE SCRAMBLED EGGS OPENING ONLY HALF OF THE PAWNS ARE
INITIALLY ON THE BOARD. BEFORE BEING ABLE TO MOVE A PAWN, EACH PLAYER MUST
TAKE TURNS PLACING AN *ENEMY* PAWN ON THE BOARD, ON ANY FREE SQUARE. FOR THE
ADVENTURERS YOU CAN ALSO OPT TO START WITH ALL PAWNS OFF THE BOARD INSTEAD OF
HALF (BUT NO WINNER CAN BE DECLARED UNTIL AT LEAST ROUND 2 ELSE FIRST PLAYER
WOULD ALWAYS WIN).
STRICT OPTION:
NORMALLY A PAWN MAY HOP OVER ONE OR MORE OF THE OPPONENT'S PAWNS AS LONG AS IT
LANDS ON ONE, CAPTURING IT. IN THE STRICT OPTION A PAWN MAY NEVER HOP OVER AN
OPPONENT'S PAWN BUT HAS TO CAPTURE THE FIRST ONE IT ENCOUNTERS.
GEMMA VARIATION:
IN THIS VARIATION, EACH TIME A PAWN IS MOVED, THE STARTING SQUARE IS PUNCHED
OUT AND CANNOT BE LANDED ON AGAIN. IF A PLAYER IS UNABLE TO MOVE ON HIS TURN,
HE LOSES.
GEMMA2 VARATION:
SAME AS GEMMA VARIATION, EXCEPT NOW A PIECE THAT CANNOT MOVE MAY BE REMOVED
FROM THE BOARD, CAUSING THE SQURE TO BE PUNCHED OUT. THIS MAKES DRAWS VIRTUALLY
IMPOSSIBLE. JUST MOVE THE PIECE TO ITSELF AND IT DISAPPEARS.

NOTE FOR "TOGGLES": THE LEGEND DISPLAYED ONSCREEN WILL BE THE MODE THAT WILL

ARROW KEYS:
THE UP/DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEYPAD CHANGE THE GAME SPEED. THE MINIMUM
AMOUNT OF TIME, IN SECONDS, THAT THE COMPUTER WILL TAKE TO THINK UP A MOVE, OR
TO MAKE EACH HOP, IS DISPLAYED NEAR THE LOWER RIGHTHAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
