  103. System Requirements

  105.   The minimum software and hardware requirements your computer system
  106.   needs to run Sage Video Poker Simulator successfully are shown in the
  107.   following list.

  109.   o Windows version 3.1 or later. This program should run with all
  110.     Windows based operating systems including Windows for Workgroups,
  111.     Windows NT, and Windows 95.

  113.   o 1.2 megabyte (MB) of free disk space.

  115. Installation Procedures
  116.  
  117.   Installing Sage Video Poker Simulator on your computer is simple. To
  118.   install, follow these steps:
  119.  
  120.   1. Start the Windows application and select the Program Manager.
  121.  
  122.   2. Select the run entry from the File menu item.
  123.  
  124.   3. Insert the Sage Video Poker Simulator disk into the disk drive.
  125.  
  126.   4. Keyin the letter of the drive that you inserted the disk into
  127.      followed by ":\setup" in the command line field. For example, if
  128.      the disk is in drive "a" you would type:
  129.  
  130.      a:\setup
  131.  
  132.      Next, select the OK button on the dialog box. This will cause Sage
  133.      Video Poker Simulator's setup executable to start running.
  134.  
  135.   5. The setup executable will display a dialog box with a default
  136.      directory specified in the field. If you want to install the files
  137.      in another directory, key it in in this field.
  138.  
  139.   6. Select the Install button on the dialog box and the files will be
  140.      installed. If the specified directory does not exist, it will be
  141.      created for you.
  142.  
  143.   7. If no errors have occurred during installation, a dialog box
  144.      claiming successful completion will be displayed when all files
  145.      have been copied and expanded.
  146.  
  147.    If the installation was successful, a Sage program group will be
  148.    created in the Program Manager. This will contain the Sage Video
  149.    Poker program item. When you double click on this, Sage Video Poker
  150.    Simulator will begin execution.

  152. Online Help
  153.  
  154.    Sage Video Poker Simulator's Online Help can be accessed in two
  155.    different ways once it is running:

  157.    By selecting the Help entry under the Help menu item.
  158.    By selecting the F1 key from the keyboard.
  159.  
  160.    The Online Help contains information that explains all aspects of
  161.    this game and describes how to use all its functionality. This
  162.    should be the user's main source of help.
  163.  
  164.    Once the Help window is displayed, the buttons near the top help you
  165.    find the information you need. The Contents button displays a list
  166.    of Help topics that Sage Video Poker Simulator provides. The Search
  167.    button displays a dialog box where you specify a topic to search
  168.    for. The Back button displays the previously viewed topic. The
  169.    History button displays a chronological list of all Help topics
  170.    viewed during your current game session.
  171.  
  172.    If you need to learn how to use Help, press the F1 key on the keyboard
  173.    while the Help window is open.

  175. Start Playing
  176.  
  177.    Once Sage Video Poker Simulator is installed, start the game by
  178.    double clicking the left mouse button on the Sage Video Poker
  179.    program item that was created by the setup executable. After doing
  180.    this, Sage Video Poker Simulator will begin execution by displaying
  181.    the introduction screen. This introduction will show you various
  182.    poker hands and display the types of poker hands that they
  183.    represent. To stop this introduction and go to the main video poker
  184.    screen simply click the left mouse button.
  185.  
  186.    Before starting to play you should set the game that you want to
  187.    play. The default game set is a Draw Poker game with a fairly
  188.    standard payout table. If you want to change the default game in
  189.    any way, select the Game Definition option under the Game menu
  190.    item. This will display the Game Definition dialog box where all
  191.    parameters controlling the game can be changed.
  192.  
  193.    Once all the game parameters are set you are ready to make your first
  194.    bet to start the game. If you want to make the maximum bet, select
  195.    the BET MAX button. If you want to make a smaller bet, select the
  196.    BET ONE button once for each credit that you want to bet. When the
  197.    bet is placed, the column representing the payouts for the selected
  198.    bet on the payout table will highlight in red and the number of
  199.    credits allocated to you will be decremented by the size bet placed.

  201.    If you have made the maximum bet (5 credits) you will automatically
  202.    be dealt the first five cards. If not, select the DEAL/DRAW button.
  203.  
  204.    After the initial five cards are dealt, you must determine which
  205.    cards you want to hold and which cards you want to discard. To hold
  206.    a card, select the HOLD/CANCEL button under it. The word HOLD
  207.    should appear directly above the card. If you change your mind and
  208.    decide to discard the card, select the HOLD/CANCEL button again and
  209.    the word HOLD should disappear. If you are dealt a good hand and
  210.    want to hold all the cards, you must select the HOLD/CANCEL button
  211.    for each of the five cards.

  213.    Once you have selected the cards that you want to hold, select the
  214.    DEAL/DRAW button. This will cause the cards that weren`t held to be
  215.    replaced with new cards from the deck. Even if all cards are held,
  216.    the DEAL/DRAW button needs to be selected in order for your final
  217.    hand to be analyzed and paid off if necessary.

  219.    After the last cards have been dealt, the computer analyzes the final
  220.    hand to find out what, if any, payout it has earned. If it has in
  221.    fact earned a payout, the type of hand along with its payout are
  222.    displayed on the screen and your credits are incremented by the
  223.    appropriate amount. At this time the round is over and the computer
  224.    awaits your next bet to repeat the process.

  226. Rules of the Game
  227.  
  228.    The video poker machine is based on the Five Card Draw poker game.
  229.    The object of the game is to get a hand that offers the highest
  230.    payout possible. Different hand types offer different payouts.
  231.    These payouts are loosely based on the probability of getting the
  232.    hand. Generally, the rarer the hand is, the higher its payout will
  233.    be. The payout table which shows the payout for each type of hand
  234.    is displayed at the top of the video poker screen.
  235.  
  236.    Here is a list of the different types of poker hands ordered from
  237.    highest to lowest:
  238.  
  239.    Royal Flush - A, K, Q, J, 10 all of the same suit.
  240.    Straight Flush - Any five card sequence in the same suit.
  241.                     (Ex: 8, 9, 10, J, Q and A, 2, 3, 4, 5 of same suit).
  242.    Four of a Kind - All four cards of the same index (Ex: K, K, K, K).
  243.    Full House - Three of a kind combined with a pair (Ex: A, A, A, 5, 5).
  244.    Flush - Any five cards of the same suit, but not in sequence.
  245.    Straight - Five cards in sequence, but not in the same suit.
  246.    Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same index.
  247.    Two Pair - Two separate pairs (Ex: 4, 4, Q, Q).
  248.    Pair - Two cards of the same index.

  250.    To begin each round of play the player must make a bet. This bet is
  251.    taken from the number of credits allocated to the player. After the
  252.    bet is made, five cards are dealt to the player and are shown on the
  253.    screen. The player then has the option of holding or discarding as
  254.    many of these cards as he wants. The cards that he discards are
  255.    then replaced with new cards from the deck. This new hand
  256.    represents the player`s final hand. If the hand is good enough to
  257.    be one of the payout hands, the number of credits allocated to the
  258.    player will immediately be incremented by the amount specified in
  259.    the payout table. At this time the machine is waiting for the
  260.    player to place his next bet to start the process over.
