  130. ===== Installation =====================================

  132. GOLDMINE will run from a floppy disk. However, some of the files are
  133. rather large and floppy disks are rather slow, and there will be delays
  134. when you change screens. Installation to a hard disk is recommended.
  135.  
  136. The installation procedure for GOLDMINE is quite simple. The package
  137. includes programs which automate the entire process. You will need about
  138. 1.2 Megabytes of available disk space on the hard drive on which you plan
  139. to install GOLDMINE.
  140.  
  141. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received the
  142. program, and whether you are installing from DOS or Windows.
  143.  
  144.  
  145. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE
  146.  
  147. To install from diskette, you need to perform the following steps.
  148.  
  149.    o  Place GOLDMINE distribution diskette "Disk 1" in the
  150.       appropriate diskette drive.
  151.  
  152.    o  Execute the installation program on the distribution diskette.
  153.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A:, type
  154.       the MS-DOS commands, "a:" to switch to the "a" drive, then
  155.       "install"
  156.  
  157.    o  Or from Windows, click the "File" menu, select "run" and enter
  158.       "a:setup" in the dialogue box.
  159.  
  160.  
  161. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  162.  
  163. If you downloaded GOLDMINE from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  164. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  165. following steps.
  166.  
  167.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  168.       directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
  169.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  170.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  171.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  172.       perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
  173.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  174.       the package.
  175.  
  176.    o  Execute the installation program which you have extracted. For
  177.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  178.       the <product> package is C:\TEMP, you would execute the MS-DOS
  179.       command, "cd \temp" to switch to the \TEMP directory, then
  180.       "install".
  181.  
  182.    o  Or from Windows, click the "File" menu, select "run" and enter
  183.       "c:\temp\setup" in the dialogue box.

  186. ALL INSTALLATIONS
  187.  
  188. Follow the instructions presented by the installation program. You will
  189. have a chance to approve installation before any changes are actually
  190. made to the contents of your hard drive. The program will suggest a
  191. destination directory, and will copy its files to that directory. If you
  192. so direct it, the installation program will install into another
  193. directory of your choice. It will make no other changes; specifically,
  194. it will not modify your autoexec.bat or config.sys files.
  195.  
  196. When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you should
  197. delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed <product>
  198. (C:\TEMP, in the above discussion), including all its contents.

  201. FOR WINDOWS USERS ONLY
  202.  
  203. Like many MS-DOS programs, GOLDMINE requires special handling by
  204. Windows. You MUST run the program by executing SLOT.PIF, not the
  205. main file SLOT.EXE, to inform Windows of its requirements. Normally
  206. the Windows SETUP program will take care of all this for you and
  207. nothing further needs to be done, but if you experience problems with
  208. sound or video, take a moment to check the properties of the GOLDMINE
  209. icon and make sure it's pointing to the PIF file, not the EXE.

  214. MS-DOS users, change to the directory where you installed Goldmine and
  215. type SLOT. Windows users, double-click on the slot machine icon. Enjoy!

  221. GOLDMINE SLOTS version 2 and later is designed to accept additional game
  222. packs. Generally, these will only run properly with registered versions
  223. of the game, so no extra packs are distributed with the evaluation
  224. version. They are, however, freely available for download from the
  225. author's web site and other locations.
