  4. This text file contains a full description of Space Empires III,
  5. how to install it, and troubleshooting information. If you have
  6. trouble installing or playing Space Empires III, look below.

  8. DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME:
  9.  
  10. Space Empires III is a massive space strategy game for Windows 95.
  11. You control your empire in an ever changing and hostile galaxy.
  12. Design your starships and use them to explore new solar systems
  13. throughout the galaxy. Hundreds of different components to place on
  14. your ships and facilities to build on planets. Use fighters, troops,
  15. and mines to supplement your starships. Build your empire through
  16. research, intelligence operations, politics, treaties, and
  17. decisively planned strategy. Engage in Tactical or Strategic Combat
  18. throughout the galaxy. Up to 10 players either human or computer
  19. with multi-player support. Customize the graphics for your ships
  20. and download updates from our WEB site!

  28. INSTALLATION:
  29.  
  30. Space Empires III is contained within a zip file. First you will
  31. need to unzip the package using PKUNZIP from DOS or WINZIP from
  32. Windows. Once the package has been decompressed, you can begin
  33. the installation program by running the file called "se3.exe".
  34. The installation program will guide you through all of the
  35. steps necessary to install Space Empires III. If you encounter
  36. any problems, please send a detailed report of your problems to
  37. malfador@crl.com.

  40. TROUBLESHOOTING:
  41.  
  42. 1. Space Empires III will not install properly.
  43.  
  44. The installation for Space Empires III requires
  45. at least 10 megabytes of free space. The game takes up 5
  46. megabytes, but the installer needs some extra space to
  47. work in. Once you have freed up that much space on your
  48. hard drive, reboot your machine. Make sure no other programs
  49. are running and try the installation program again. If this
  50. doesn't work, your download may be corrupted. Try redownloading.

  52. 2. Space Empires III crashes sometimes for no reason.
  53.  
  54. Try the following:
  55. a. Stop all other running programs.
  56. b. Make sure you have at least 4 megabytes of free RAM.
  57. c. Under the File Menu select Machine Options, and turn sound
  58.    off.
  59. d. Restart your computer fresh.
  60.  
  61. 3. The windows in Space Empires III only take up a small portion
  62.    of the main Tactical Window.
  63.  
  64. From the main menu, select Windows/Arrange. Select the resolution
  65. you are currently running in (you can find this out by right-clicking
  66. on the desktop and selecting Properties, and looking at the Settings
  67. tab).

  69. 4. The Space Empires III screen colors are strange.
  70.  
  71. Space Empires III must be run in at least 256 colors. You can
  72. find out what mode you are running in by right-clicking on the desktop
  73. and selecting Properties, and looking at the Settings tab. The Color
  74. Palette selection needs to be 256 Color or higher. (The game runs best
  75. in High Color 16-bit or better.)

  77. 5. When I switch to another window and then switch back to Space Empires
  78.    III, the colors change.
  79.  
  80. If you are running in 256 colors, then Windows has to adjust the palette
  81. for each program that is running. The other program you were looking at
  82. must have different colors than the ones used in Space Empires III. You
  83. can fix this problem by shutting down the other program. If the colors
  84. in Space Empires III are still strange, you should shut the game down
  85. and restart it. Also be sure to shutdown any other programs that are
  86. running.

  88. 6. I start the game but I can't figure out how to play.

  90. From the Starting Window, select the Tutorial. It will take you
  91. through a number of turns and introduce you to all of the windows
  92. you will be using.

  94. 7. I have questions that aren't answered in the help file.
