  6. System Requirements:

  8. This program requires an IBM PC or compatible with at least VGA.
  9. In general, faster systems will run the program more efficiently.

  12. Sound Blaster Notes:
  13. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  14. This program contains routines to play digital sound on a Sound
  15. Blaster or compatible card.  However, this program does NOT
  16. contain autodetection routines.  This program relies upon the
  17. BLASTER= variable being set appropriately in your environment.
  18. If the BLASTER= variable is set incorrectly, the program may
  19. crash.  If the BLASTER= variable is absent the program will
  20. NOT attempt to use Sound Blaster sound.
  21.  
  22. Additionally you will need to have free EMS memory to hear
  23. all digital sounds (they're too big to fit in conventional
  24. memory).  The sounds deemed "most important" to game play
  25. will be loaded into conventional memory on a first-come, first-
  26. served basis.  To hear ALL sounds you will need enough EMS
  27. free to fit the file METSFX.DBO.  Check free EMS with the
  28. MEM command under DOS.

  33. Use arrow keys for side-to-side movement.
  34. ALT - fires the retro rockets/operates mothership door
  35. CTRL (or UP) - fires your weapon (only during ASCENT, no other time!)

  41. [J] - toggle joystick on/off
  42. [Ctrl-J] - calibrate joystick

  46. [F10] - Quit game, go to menu
  47. [ESC] - Quit game, go to DOS

  52. The following keys may also be used.  They are active all the
  53. time:

  55.  K and L - same as Left/Right cursor keys above
  56.  Semicolon (;) - same as ALT above
  57.  Apostrophe (') - same as CTRL above

  60. Joystick Controls:
  61. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  62. When the joystick is enabled (see above) the keyboard also
  63. functions as a backup, allowing you to control different
  64. parts of the game with either the joystick or the keyboard.

  66. To initiate a drop sequence with the joystick, either press
  67. Button 2 or pull DOWN on the joystick.
  68.  
  69. To slow your freefall descent either press (and hold) Button 2
  70. or push UP on the joystick.
  71.  
  72. To rise faster either press (and hold) Button 2 or push UP
  73. on the joystick.

  75. On the way up Button 1 fires your weapon.

  78. Game Notes:
  79. ~~~~~~~~~~~
  80. Descend to the surface in a controlled fashion and land on one of
  81. the available landing pads.  Smaller pads earn more points.  You
  82. MUST use retro rockets to touch down.  Make sure that you are going
  83. slow enough that landing gear is extended.  Landing gear retracts
  84. automatically when you are going too fast to land safely.
  85.  
  86. Astronaut will beam aboard your ship.  Fly back up to waiting
  87. mothership.  On the way up, you may blast away at the meteors to
  88. clear your path and earn extra points.
  89.  
  90. Dock precisely with the mothership and then turn around and go get
  91. the rest of the astronauts.
  92.  
  93. The longer and better you play, the better your ship's firepower,
  94. which enables you to clear more meteors away, making your mission
  95. a little more entertaining.
  96.  
  97. With each successful rescue, more meteors enter the atmosphere and
  98. attempt to thwart your rescue efforts.  How long can you keep
  99. rescuing the astronauts?

  111. The more rapidly you rescue the astronauts, the more TIME bonus
  112. points you will receive.

  114. Get the highest points possible to get into the Hall Of Fame!
  115.  
  116. The Hall Of Fame also keeps track of the total number of
  117. astronauts rescued on each of the winning games recorded.
