  1.         Declaration Class
  2.  
  3. In scanning the ST Chronology, it is apparent that not all ships
  4. can be accounted for by known starship classes. The time period
  5. from 2196 to 2245 features a number of exploratory missions, but
  6. no starship designs from that era are detailed by canonical
  7. sources. However, by looking at the evidence presented, it is
  8. possible to reconstruct the design of those ships, given a few
  9. basic assumptions.

  11. For the purposes of this reconstruction, I have assumed the
  12. following:
  13.  
  14.    o The hypothetical design is known as Declaration Class.
  15.    o The ship design based on one of Matt Jeffries' preliminary
  16.     designs for the Enterprise, the same source as the
  17.     Daedalus Class design. ("The Making of Star Trek") 
  18.    o The following ships were of this class:
  19.     - USS Valiant (TOS "A Taste of Armageddon")
  20.     - SS Columbia (TOS "The Cage", "The Menagerie")
  21.     - USS Republic (TOS "Court Martial")
  22.     - SS Beagle (TOS "Bread and Circuses")
  23.  
  24. The Declaration Class was the Federation's primary vehicle of
  25. operations from 2196, when the Daedalus Class was withdrawn from
  26. service, until 2245, when the Constitution Class came into use.
  27. Noted ships of this Class were the USS Valiant, lost in 2217 and
  28. the SS Columbia, lost in 2236. Typical missions included
  29. exploration, research, and first contact.

  31. After the introduction of the Constitution Class, ships of this
  32. type were relegated to exploration and training duties. Known
  33. ships include the USS Republic NCC-1371, in service in the 2250s,
  34. and the SS Beagle, lost in 2261.
  35.  
  36. The Declaration Class was equipped with Warp Drive, but a
  37. relatively primitive design known as the "Stardrive", giving the
  38. class its alternate name of a Class-IV Stardrive type.
  39. Matter/antimatter engines were not yet in use aboard starships at
  40. that time, severely limiting the capabilities of the ship. A
  41. fusion/fission reactor core provided the plasma needed to power
  42. the Warp Drives. ("Court Martial") Some time between 2236 and
  43. 2254 ("The Cage"), matter/antimatter engines came into use.
  44.  
  45. Long range subspace radio had not yet been invented during the
  46. initial years of the Declaration Class' service. While short range
  47. subspace radio was used to conduct the negotiations ending the
  48. Romulan Wars ("Balance of Terror") in 2161, conventional radio
  49. signals were still used to report back to the Federation in 2168
  50. ("A Piece of the Action") aboard Daedalus Class ships, and as
  51. late as 2236 when the SS Columbia was lost.

  53. Physically, the ship resembled an inverted Constitution Class
  54. vessel, with a large saucer-shaped Primary Hull housing the
  55. main bridge, sick bay, engineering, and crew quarters. A sensor
  56. dome on the ventral surface acted as a source for shipboard
  57. lasers ("The Cage", "Obsession") and photon torpedos ("If Wishes
  58. Were Horses"). The bridge was positioned on the dorsal surface of
  59. the saucer. The computers were pre-duotronic in design. ("The
  60. Ultimate Computer")  
  61.  
  62. The crew complement was approximately 75, plus or minus 25
  63. depending on the mission. Engineering was located just forward of
  64. the Impulse Drives, which themselves were at the aft end of the
  65. Primary Hull. The fission/fusion reactor cores were located here,
  66. and conduits transfered plasma to the Warp Drives, and the
  67. Navigational Deflector on the Secondary Hull.

  69. Two underslung Warp Nacelles connected by small pylons to the
  70. Primary Hull. The Warp Nacelles were slightly more advanced than
  71. those of the Daedalus Class; individual coil segments were not
  72. visible, and the entire nacelle was encased in a protective
  73. outer layer. A Bussard hydrogen collector extended from the 
  74. front of each nacelle, and just behind it were a number of vents
  75. for flushing unwanted materials.

  77. A short dorsal rose from the Primary Hull, angled back above the
  78. Warp Nacelles, and supported a small Secondary Hull. The upper
  79. surface would clamshell open, similar to the cargo bay of the old
  80. NASA Space Shuttles, to allow the 2 standard shuttlecraft entry
  81. and egress, as well as permit easy loading of cargo. On the
  82. forward surface, a golden dish acted as Navigational Deflector.
  83. Because of the dangerous nature of fission fuel, it was also kept
  84. in this part of the ship.
