  71. This is a good selection of the "best" sharewares and freewares that are
  72. available mostly from the SimTel Software Repository (previously, the
  73. SIMTEL20 archive site) and the Garbo ftp site (garbo.uwasa.fi).
  74.  
  75. This list contains many commonly-and-frequently-wanted sharewares/freewares/
  76. public domain programs. So, before you post any requests for ftp'able MSDOS
  77. files in comp.archives.msdos.d, comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted or other msdos/pc
  78. newsgroups, please try to read the list first. This will help reduce the
  79. traffic in those groups a bit. Besides you might find some other interesting
  80. stuff here.

  82. For security reasons the SimTel Software Repository is located on a host that
  83. is not accessible by Internet users, however its files are available by
  84. anonymous ftp from the primary mirror site Oak (oak.oakland.edu) and secondary
  85. mirror sites (a list of which can be found in Appendix 1).  I, therefore, use
  86. the directories of Oak in this compilation.
  87.  
  88. If you do not have ftp access, please read Appendix 2 for instructions
  89. on how to obtain most of the files listed below by e-mail.
  90.

  92.       either  pkunzip.exe v.2.04g  in  pkz204g.exe
  93.       or        unzip.exe v.5.1    in  unz51x.exe   to unzip them.
  94.     Please refer to  Section B  below to find where these can be obtained. **
  95.  (It's also important to remember to transfer the files in BINARY setting
  96.   both from the ftp site to your host and from your host to your computer.)

  99. some bandwidth, I do not want to include a very very long list of
  100. acknowledgment. I do sincerely thank each and every one of you who has
  101. contributed to this compilation in one way or the other. So, this collection
  102. is the product of the combined wisdom of many netnews readers and archive
  103. users. (yes, errors and shortcomings are my responsibility :-) Please note
  104. that archive/ftp site maintainers do not endorse the recommendations in
  105. the list unless they tell you otherwise.
