  12. What is the status of ANS Forth?

  17.     Here's an update on the status of ANS Forth:

  19.     The draft standard has been submitted to X3, the ANSI
  20.     committee responsible for "information processing" (including most
  21.     computer- related topics, languages in particular) for final
  22.     processing.  It is currently the subject of a "letter ballot" by
  23.     all X3 members.  That ballot will close Dec.  30.  If there are
  24.     any negative votes, X3J14 will have to respond to them, and X3
  25.     members will be given a chance to change their vote.  Otherwise,
  26.     or thereafter, there will be a 2-week review by the ANSI Board of
  27.     Standards Review (which very rarely creates a delay), and then the
  28.     standard will be final.  If there are no X3 negatives, this should
  29.     happen some time in Jan., and the official standard will be
  30.     published & available 2-3 mos.  later.

  32.     The TC will be required to review the standard 4 years from
  33.     now, and either make changes or "reaffirm" it.  Between now and
  34.     then, we are supposed to respond to "requests for interpretation"
  35.     that may be submitted to ANSI or CBEMA/X3.

  37.     We are currently discussing procedures for this informally, by
  38.     phone and on the internet, where we may be reached at
  39.     x3j14@minerva.com.  Response procedures and any pending requests
  40.     or other questions will be the subject of our next meeting,
  41.     scheduled for June, 94.  Comments and suggestions will be
  42.     appreciated.
