  68.                               IMPORTANT NOTE:

  70.                Executing this program WILL destroy the data     
  71.               in memory, including data located on RAM disks.

  74.      You  will  find  this  program  useful, not only in identifying an
  75.      existing fault but also as part of a periodic maintenance program.
  76.      This  program  has  been  developed  as  an exhaustive test of the
  77.      memory in a PC, XT, AT  or any  of their  clones. It  is much more
  78.      comprehensive than  the Power On Self Test and delivers diagnostic
  79.      messages which are  much  easier  to  understand.  In  addition to
  80.      system or  base memory,  RamTest will also test Expanded Memory on
  81.      all machines and Extended Memory on AT type machines.

  84.                               RUNNING RAMTEST
  85.

  87.              WE SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER PROGRAM      
  88.        (including memory resident programs) while using RamTest.  
  89.

  91.      To start the program place the disk in the default drive and type:
  92.  
  93.                RAMTEST [Enter]
  94.  
  95.      The test is best run from a floppy  disk which  has been formatted
  96.      using the  /S option  from IBM or MS DOS ver 3.1 or lower (so that
  97.      you  can  boot  directly  from  it)  and  contains   no  RAM-based
  98.      utilities. Many  commonly used RAM resident programs and utilities
  99.      "take command" of portions of the system and may cause  RamTest to
  100.      crash.  AN  IMPORTANT  EXCEPTION  to  this  is if your system uses
  101.      Expanded Memory, you MUST  then have  the Expanded  Memory Manager
  102.      included in your CONFIG.SYS file in order to test Expanded Memory.

  104.      When RamTest  first starts,  it computes  the Relative Performance
  105.      Index. This number approximates the factor by which the computer's
  106.      performance exceeds  that of  a 4.77MHz 8088. The number generated
  107.      will probably be different than that generated on the same machine
  108.      by the  Norton Utilities. The difference arises from the different
  109.      methods used to compute the processor speed.
  110.  
  111.      After the startup command is executed, the program  determines the
  112.      RAM configuration of your system and displays the RamTest menu.

  124.                              MAIN MENU OPTIONS
  125.  
  126.      All RamTest  options can  also be  specified from the RamTest Main
  127.      Menu.
  128.  
  129.           P    The  P  option  disables   parity  checking   for  Eagle
  130.                computers and  other machines without parity checked RAM
  131.                and also to merely  disable checking  of the  RAM chips.
  132.                This  option  should  also  be used with computers which
  133.                have  parity  detection  circuitry  which  is noticeably
  134.                different  from   IBM  (PC   Limited  and  other  clones
  135.                included).  If  RamTest  consistently  indicates  parity
  136.                errors in  a computer which does not fail otherwise, you
  137.                should use the P option.
  138.  
  139.           E    Cycles the echo option  through  the  possible settings.
  140.                The ECHO option causes RamTest to echo error messages to
  141.                a printer or other  output  device.  In  this  mode, the
  142.                error message  will be  output to the indicated port and
  143.                then testing will continue without pause.  The allowable
  144.                choices for  ECHO are COM1, COM2, LPT1, LPT2. If COM1 or
  145.                COM2 is chosen, the baud  rate  parameters  must  be set
  146.                using the DOS MODE command prior to running RamTest. For
  147.                example, to run RamTest with the error messages going to
  148.                a printer  at 9600  baud, use  the following sequence of
  149.                commands:

  151.                     MODE COM1 9600
  152.                     RAMTEST COM1
  153.  
  154.                ***  Note that you may also specify the required port as
  155.                     a command line parameter.

  157.           C    If you  can tell the program what size memory chips your
  158.                computer has  then  the  diagnostics  can  be  even more
  159.                precise as to the location of any errors.
  160.  
  161.           S    Toggles "Sound on Error".
  162.  
  163.           Q    Toggles "Quit on Error".

  165.      As  with  all  Brown  Bag  products,  pressing  the  F1 key brings
  166.      context-sensitive  help.  Pressing  the  Esc  key  terminates  the
  167.      program.

  169.                               TYPES OF MEMORY
  170.  
  171.      The  difference  between  base,  expanded  and  extended memory is
  172.      fairly simple. Base Memory is that computer memory  below the 640k
  173.      DOS limit.  This is  generally where  programs are loaded and run.

  183.      Expanded Memory is memory which is contained on an expansion board
  184.      which  conforms   to  the  Lotus-Intel-Microsoft  Expanded  Memory
  185.      Specification (EMS). It can  actually  be  many  megabytes  but is
  186.      accessed in  16k chunks  which are  mapped into an unused space in
  187.      memory, often  segment D000.  Extended Memory  is only  used on AT
  188.      type  computers  and  is  related  to  the 80286 protected mode of
  189.      operation.

  191.                                  The Menu
  192.  
  193.      The menu allows  you  to  choose  any  combination  of  the memory
  194.      sections of  your computer  for testing. Each menu item is related
  195.      to one or more types  of  memory  but  only  they  appear  if your
  196.      particular  machine  has  the  type  of  memory  in  question. The
  197.      complete menu (seen only on an AT type system) is:

  202.                          4.  Extended Memory
  203.                          5.  Base and Expanded Memory

  209.      If your  machine does  not have  Expanded or  Extended Memory, you
  210.      would just see:

  227.      NOTE: In  order to  detect and  test Expanded Memory, the Expanded
  228.      Memory Manager required for your system must be installed, usually
  229.      as a  device driver  in the  CONFIG.SYS file. Once base memory has
  230.      been tested, the Expanded Memory Manager no longer exists and menu
  231.      items 3 and 5 will not appear. Moral: Test Expanded Memory first.

  242.      At  any  point,  pressing  F1  will cause a help screen to appear.
  243.      Further information can then be obtained regarding any of the menu
  244.      choices. Press Esc to return to the Test Menu.

  247.      THE OPTIONS
  248.  
  249.      Repeat Count
  250.  
  251.      Sets the  number of  times a  test or  set of  tests will execute.
  252.      Range is 1 to  65535,  with  0  meaning  continuous.  Pressing Esc
  253.      during testing  will cause  the program  to halt at the end of the
  254.      current cycle.
  255.  
  256.      Base Memory
  257.  
  258.      Tests Base Memory. In  the process  all device  drivers, interrupt
  259.      handlers, RAM  disks, spoolers and DOS itself will be erased. Once
  260.      Base Memory has been tested, therefore, the program  cannot return
  261.      you to  DOS without rebooting. This will be reflected in Menu-item
  262.      9. It is possible that  an  intermittent  problem  in  Base Memory
  263.      could cause  the test program itself to crash. Even in such a case
  264.      repeated runs should identify the problem.

  266.      Expanded Memory
  267.  
  268.      Expanded Memory can only be tested if base memory has not yet been
  269.      tested and  the Expanded Memory Manager has been loaded. Any board
  270.      which conforms to the Lotus-Intel-Microsoft EMS can be tested.

  272.      Extended Memory
  273.  
  274.      Extended Memory only  appears  on  AT  type  systems.  No software
  275.      driver is  required but  the SETUP  program must  have been run to
  276.      tell the system that extended memory exists.

  279.      DIAGNOSTICS
  280.  
  281.      Should a memory error be detected,  the  test  will  stop  and the
  282.      diagnostic  message(s)  displayed.  In  most  cases,  the  failing
  283.      address will be  displayed  and  the  row  of  memory  causing the
  284.      failure will be identified. The bad row is identified in more than
  285.      one way so that most users can pinpoint the failure.  On the lines
  286.      that  follow,  the  bad  data  bits are pointed out by bit number.
  287.      Using the row  number,  bit  information  and  your manufacturer's
  288.      documentation, you should be able to locate the offending chip and
  289.      replace it. If you have specified  the size  of your  memory chips
  290.      then even more specific details are given.

  301.      In the  event of  a parity  error, only the offending row of chips
  302.      will be identified. Again, using the  manufacturer's documentation
  303.      you should be able to identify the parity chip and replace it.
  304.  
  305.      If more  than one  bit is declared bad, or if the problem persists
  306.      after replacing  chips, the  problem with  the system  may be more
  307.      than just bad RAM chips. In this situation, you might want to take
  308.      the machine to a qualified service facility.
