Version 1.20
The Quick Message Editor
For QuickBBS, RemoteAccess and compatible
Bulletin Board Systems
By
Dror Tirosh
Introduction.
QuickEd is an external Full Screen Editor for QuickBBS systems, It
started its way as a Hebrew message editor for the Opus BBS. But it was
never installed because it was difficult to install an Opus external
message editor. When QuickBBS appeared, the Hebitor (Hebrew editor, the
name of the Hebrew version) was born, and now it used used on some
boards. QuickEd is the English-only version of Hebitor, written
especially to be used in the U.S.A and Europe.
QuickEd is actually two different programs. The unregistered version
can be freely used as is without any license or fee, as long as you do
not try to remove the copyright notice from it.
The only modification allowed is configuring your copy of QUICKED using
QEDINST. Do not distribute such a copy, only the original package.
(Repacking using a different archive program is allowed as long as all
the files are included, but still not recommended). If you find it
useful, and want to gain access to the special options of the
registered version, send the registration form, and receive (by mail or
net-mail) the registration code. From the moment you install this code
into your QuickEd, it becomes registered to your board only. You may
not distribute the registered version, or attempt to remove or change
the registration information in the editor. More information about
registration below.
Quick-Ed features:
o Full-screen editing
o Can be used as local- or remote text editor.
o Familiar WordStar-like commands
o Smart screen refresh method for quick response
o Full keyboard support for popular communication programs:
Procomm, GT PowerComm, Telix, Qmodem, Telemate.
o Quote window - see (and quote) the message you are replying to
o Time left display, and warning when time is almost up.
o Idle warning before disconnecting
o Word wrapping and paragraph reformatting
o SysOp keyboard is active while user editing a message
o No strange-looking command line parameters
o Easy to use menu-driven installation and customization program
o Installable colors
o Select either ASCII-only or IBM-graphics character set
o Use your favorite editor in local mode
o Automatic Zmodem message upload
o Xmodem/Ymodem/Zmodem message upload
o Temporary message storing and retrieving
o Familiar QuickBBS local keys - Hangup, Jump to DOS
o Text file import/export
o 9 SysOp macros - in local and remote.
Registered version only:
* See name of user on-line
* Special remote options for selected (privileged) users.
The registered version of QuickEd can determine the name of the user
on-line, and display it on the local sysop screen. Also, the name of
the user is looked at a list of privileged users, to determine whether
the that user has a privilege to use some advanced options from remote.
The unregistered version of QuickEd cannot determine automatically
whether a user is privileged or not, and thus the privilege can be
obtained only by the sysop local intervention (pressing Alt-P)
Testing Quick-Ed (Demo mode)
The Quick-Ed provides an easy way for testing. Simply type QUICKED At
the DOS prompt and you will enter demo mode. All registered version
options work in demo mode. In demo mode, the Quick-Ed will work with
the keyboard and screen only. You don't need the FOSSIL driver to work
in demo mode.
You can edit the message, view the help file, even save your message
and quote, just as if you were in the BBS. The BBS message base will
not be effected by saving a message. The quote window will show the
saved message.
Installation procedure
As simple as possible:
Un-ZIP the ZIPfile and run QEDINST. The first time you run it, it will
create a configuration file.
Now run the BBS configuration program, and set the name of the external
editor to QUICKED.EXE with the appropriate path. You may put QuickEd at
any directory you like. Just make sure that QUICKED.HLP, QUICKED.CFG
are located in this directory, or use QEDPATH environment variable (see
below).
Customization:
Now, that you see QuickEd 1.20 works well with your board, you can run
QEDINST and customize the editor to your needs:
1. Colors - you can choose what colors will be used for the title lines,
message text, status line etc. Choosing only shades of white
and blue (underline) will make the editor compatible with
non-IBM VT-100 emulators.
2. Frame - you can select the kind of help window frame you like. If you
have many non-IBMers among your users, you should change
it to ASCII frame, or choose the frame chars yourself.
3. Quote Char - Select the character for the quote window header. You can set
the Quote Char to a single line (default), double line or ASCII
minus sign.
4. Message Upload Options:
1. Allow upload - specify which user is allowed to use the upload
option key - ^K X/Y/Z (for Xmodem, Ymodem and Zmodem):
All users, Privileged users (users who appear in the QUICKED.PRV
file) or disable it altogether.
note that setting it to Privileged on non-registered system will
prevent a user from uploading, unless the sysop give him the
privilege to do so manually (by pressing Alt-P)
2. Zmodem AutoUpload - specify which user is allowed to upload message
using Zmodem AutoUpload. QuickEd will automatically recognize
the user tries to upload, and enter upload mode.
3. X/Y/Zmodem pathname - the full pathname (including file extention)
to the external protocol. Make sure to add the right pathname
and extension (.COM or .EXE)
4. X/Y/Zmodem cmd line - parameters to set the external protocol to
recieve mode.
These parameters have default values for the popular DSZ program
that implements all three protocols.
There are 3 "macro commands" for the external protocol command
line:
*F filename
*S speed (baud rate)
*P port number
*T time left (in minute)
you must place *F on the command line. QuickEd will replace it
with its temporary file name when calling the external program.
For multiline systems, it is neccessary to put *P (speed) and
optionally *S (speed) on the command line, to make sure the
file transfer will be routed to the right line.
5. Local editor - You can decide to select some other text editor for
use in local mode. This editor is invoked by pressing Alt-E
in the editor, or automatically (by setting autoload in the
installation program). When you enter the editor, you will have
the message you are replying to (if any) on the screen.
If you exit the editor without saving, then the message will
be aborted (even if you were replying a message)
6. High chars - When this option is On, characters above chr(128) cannot
be entered as a part of the message. This restricts messages
to ASCII-only, and eliminates some of the "garbage" that
appears when using bad phone lines.
7. Local display - by default, the sysop's screen is an image of the user's
screen. This, however, might slow down the fast beasts (HST and
others) or slow computers. So, you can change Local Display to
Off. In this mode, all the sysop will see is the user name
currently editing the message (for registered version only.)
8. Quite mode - When this option is On, the bell of the Sysop's computer
won't ring when it does on the user's side (That is, on user
inactivity warning, and time left warning)
9. Local Idle check - When this option is On, the idle time check is
done for any user who uses the editor (the idle time is the
BBS's inactivity timeout). When Off, a user entered in
local mode won't be disconnected by inactivity timeout.
(Still, the Time Limit is always functional).
10. Swap drive - When this option is set to None, QuickEd remains in memory
when it run any external program (editor, upload protocol, DOS
shell), and occupies about 60K. When set to drive C to E, then
QuickEd will try to swap itself to disk or EMS before running the
external program, and will occupy only 4K. If QuickEd fails to
swap itself, the external program won't be invoked.
Note that even if you use EMS, you must set this flag to any
drive, even though it won't save anything unless not enough EMS
memory is available.
QuickEd Support Files
QuickEd uses several files for its operation:
1. QUICKED.CFG - this file is created and updated by the installation
program, QEDINST. QuickEd cannot run without one handy. Also, when
upgrading to a newer version of QuickEd, the QEDINST automatically
upgrade the configuration file with the new options.
2. QUICKED.HLP - The help file is accessible at any time by pressing ^K?
or F1. It show a brief list of all the keys supported by QuickEd.
3. QUICKED.MAC - a macro file for local and remote use. Up to 9 macros can
be defined. Each line of this file is a macro, thus only the first
9 lines of this file are ever used. The macros are activated by
pressing ^K-<n> (and in local mode also Alt-<n>) where n is digit
1-9. A caret ^ is used as control-character introducer.
e.g.:
^Q^C^M^I^I^IThe Sysop.^Z
is a macro line that will move to the end of the text, leave one
empty line, move 3 tabs to the right, sign "The Sysop" and save the
message. Note that you won't see this macro displayed on the screen,
as the editor will exit before it is shown on the screen, but will
be written to the message.
and for registered systems:
4. QUICKED.PRV - a list of privileged users. Privilegged users can use
the editor as a text file editor, and import/export files to and
from the message editor. Also, privileged users are allowed to
use the macros ^K-1 to ^K-9 from remote.
each line in this file is a name name of one user, first and
last name. The name of the current user on-line is compared to
the names in this list to determine whether the user is
privileged or not.
All these files are first looked at the current directory. If they are
not found there, QuickEd will look for environment variable QEDPATH,
and use its value as path for these files. Finaly, if this environment
variable is not found, then QuickEd will look in the directory the EXE
file resides.
To set this environment variable, add SET command to the appropriate
batch file. e.g.:
SET QEDPATH=D:\QEDFILES
Version Upgrade
To upgrade from version 1.00 and keep your setup and registration
information, you should rename QUICKED.EXE (1.00) to QUICKED.OLD before
UNZIPping the ZIP file. This way, QEDINST will copy the information from
it to the new version. Upgrading of all subsequent versions to any newer
version will become automatic, as now this information is kept in a
separate file QUICKED.CFG.
Note that the automatic upgrade will set all new configuration parameters
to default values, and thus you can run the upgraded QuickEd after the
automatic apgrade with no need to set anything manually.
Registration
After testing the unregistered version run QEDINST and enter the
Register submenu. Fill in your full details and choose the option
Print registration form. Fold the form, enclose a cheque of at least $9
(for versions 1.xx) or $15+ (all future versions). You may send the
equivalence in Canadian, West-European, or Israeli currency.
Tape or staple the form, and send it. You will receive (within a about
two-three weeks) a reply by network or normal mail with your own
registration code. NOTE: Even if you don't specify NET address for your
BBS, still it is recomended to supply (by writing) a net address where
a NET-mail with your registration code can be sent, since this might be
a faster way than ordinary mail.
This code is calculated according to your BBS name, Network address
and requested version. Run QEDINST again and choose Enter code.
Type in your registration code. Your version of QuickEd is now
registered. Your BBS name and network address will appear on the
top line of the screen when editing a message, and from now on the name
of the user editing a message will appear on the bottom line, and you can
now make you list of privileged users (sysop, cosysops) that may use the
special features from remote.
The special features are:
- Import/Export file into the message (thus efectively using QuickEd as a
remote text file editor)
- Use 10 keyboard macros from remote.
- Upload a message (can be configured for All users or Privileged users
only)
Notes:
1. QuickEd now uses the system log file to determine the user name.
So you should make sure to enter the right name (and path) for
this file. If you are using multiline system, make sure to have
SEPERATE log file for each line.
2. If you were registered for previous version of QuickEd, then you
know you had to add a little "patch" to the menu system. This
"patch" is not needed anymore, so you can remove it. Just remove
the "execute questionnaire QUICKED" from the main menu, and delete
the QUICKED.Q-A file. (of course, you may choose not to remove it,
but this is pointless).
IMPORTANT: Do not change your BBS name or Address in QEDINST after
sending your registration form, if you do the code you will receive
will be useless.
Registration Procedure
The registered version of QuickEd attempts to display the name of the
user currently editing a message on the screen. It also uses this name
to determine whether this user is privileged or not (see "Privileged
operations" below). Unfortunately, the BBS does not freely give this
information to the external editor like it does for doors, and we had
to find some twisted way to get it. The way we found for the BBS to
give that information, is using the log file. The log file is searched
backwards for the string "on-line at". This string is immediately
preceeded by the name of the user.
e.g.:
> 21:18:28 Dror Tirosh on-line at 2400 baud
Editing a message.
First, make sure your 'Use ANSI' and 'ANSI Editor' flags are set.
When entering the QuickEd, the first two lines will look like this:
QuickEd 1.20 - Unregistered version
Type <Ctrl-K> <?> or <F1> for help. Time Left:XX Insert
(or with the BBS name and address, for registered versions)
The Time Left display will update every minute. When you have two
minutes left QuickEd will warn you with a bell and the time left
will start flashing.
The editor starts in Insert mode. You can change to overwrite mode by
pressing Ins or ^V, but usually this isn't necessary because Insert
mode does not slow down editing.
The message is displayed on the Sysop's screen too. He can also write into
it. This allows 'Chatting' within the message.
You can now start your message. You can use WordStar-like control codes or
the VT-100 keys (if supported by you terminal program) to move the cursor
around and edit your message:
Note: the ^ sign means pressing the key with <Ctrl>.

notes:
(1) Note Procomm supports PgUp and PgDn codes, but you must press ^PgUp and
^PgDn (since these keys are used for upload/download).
(2) Some too-accurate VT-100 emulations swap the Backspace and Del
keys according to their positions on the VT-100 keyboard. Use
ANSI emulation instead of VT-100, that usually fixes the problem.
(3) As some terminal program do not support the Ins key, we placed it
also on the F2 key for convenience. If your terminal does not support
function keys you will have to use ^V.
Leaving the message -
You have two ways to leave the current message.
1. Leave without saving - Press Esc key twice, or ^K^A, and a message
would appear: Y to leave, or N to continue editing.
2. Save and exit - Press ^K^S, ^K^D or ^Z to save immediately,
with no confirmation.
Restore current line -
This option restores the current line to what it looked like when
you entered it. This option will NOT return a line deleted with ^Y.
See 'Line Manipulation' section for doing so.
Redraw line -
This option is useful if you get noise on the line. The Quick-Ed
will re-send the current line to restore it. If several lines were
distorted you can use ^K^R - redraw screen.
Get help screen.
When you enter the help, a window will be opened and the
help screen will be displayed. Use <Enter> to move to the next
screen. You dont have to wait for the whole screen to be displayed -
You can press <Enter> in the middle of a screen display to get
the next one. Use <Space> or Escape twice to leave help
Wrap around and split-join.
This version of QuickEd has improved control of the text: line
splitting and joining. Automatic paragraph reformatting, improved
word-wrap. When a line is word-wrapped it becomes a part of a paragraph.
When text is entered in the middle of a line words on the end of the
line will no longer be lost- they will be wrapped to the next line.
If the next line is a part of the same paragraph the whole paragraph
will be reformatted. QuickEd now supports the FIDO standard soft-carriage
return character. Use the command ^Q^M to show markers for wrapped lines.
Line manipulation
QuickEd does not support the WordStar block commands- they are simply
too much for an on-line editor. QuickEd's line manipulations commands
are built around the undelete buffer. Deleteing lines with ^Y places
them in the undelete buffer. ^U will pop line back from the buffer. This
is used when you accidentally delete a line or when you need to move lines
in your message - undelete them somewhere else in your message. When
you want to copy lines use ^W. This command pushes the current line into
the undelete buffer without erasing it.
You can Purge a line (using ^K^P) : this will delete the line, but won't
place it in the delete buffer. This line cannot be undeleted. You can
use this if you have some important text you want to move in the undelete
buffer, and you have a line disturbing you, and you dont want it in
the undelete buffer.
Note the undelete buffer is lost when you exit the QuickEd. It is not saved
with the message.
Message Upload
There are two ways to upload message: Manual and automatic.
To upload message manually, Press ^K and then X,Y or Z for uploading using
Xmodem, Ymodem or Zmodem. Press Enter at the prompt and start the upload.
The message will be added at the cursor position in the message buffer.
The Text You already wrote will not be erased by the message upload. At
the end of the upload, you may continue editing the message, or upload in
another file.
Automatic message upload is done simply by starting Zmodem upload at your
terminal program.
Quoting Messages
For quoting messages you need to reply and tell QuickBBS you want to
quote message text. Otherwise a message 'No message to quote' would
appear if you try to press ^K^Q.
If everything is ok the screen will be split, and a quote window will
appear in the bottom of the screen. You will see the first lines of the
message you our replying to. The cursor is placed on the first line of
that message, and the place of the cursor in the message you are writing
is shown by the blinking underline position marker.
You can move around the quote window with Up/Down and Page Up/Page Down keys
(and their WordStar-like equivalents, described above). When you find a
line you want to quote, press <Enter>. The line will be copied into you
message at the current cursor position marked by the blinking underline.
Both cursors are moved one line down, to allow multiple line quoting.
If any cursor reaches the bottom of its window it will scroll up.
If the quote window is too small, you can enlarge it with Begin Line or
Top Text keys (^Q^S , ^Q^E or Home key) and reduce its size back again
with End Line or End Text keys (^Q^C ,^Q^D or End key).
If you press ^K^Q you will return to edit mode, with the Quote window
still open. You can use this options for just looking at the message
without quoting it. Pressing ^K^Q again will return you to Quote mode.
There is no special key to remove the Quote window from the screen. simply
move with the cursor down until it hits the Quote window, and the Quote
window will be closed.
Message storing and restoring.
Press ^K^O and your message will be stored in a temporary file.
You can leave the message editor, look up a detail in another message,
enter the message editor again and recall your message to continue it
using ^K^I. You can restore a message more than one time.
No other user can restore the message you stored. You can restore a
message even after hanging up if no one stored another message yet.
The same keys are used for import/export files for privileged users.
Sysop Keys
QuickEd supports some of the familiar BBS local keys.
Alt-H -Hangup.
Alt-J -Jump to DOS. Type EXIT to return, just like in the BBS. The
user's status line will be replaced by the message "The SysOp
has shelled to DOS, please wait" and, as your might have
guessed, when you return "The SysOp has returned from DOS,
Thanks for waiting!" will inform the user of your return.
Alt-U Disable/Enable user keyboard. For example, if the sysop wants to
import a file, but not let the user do it, he can disable first
its keyboard.
Alt-P Toggle user privilege. Privileged user can import/export files
and use the 9 macros. For example, the SysOp can disable the
user keyboard, toggle privileged mode, import a file, toggle
again and restore the user keyboard.
Alt-E Run the local message editor as configured in QEDINST menu
Setup\Local editor. Available in local mode only, when local
editor is not autoloaded. When quoting the local editor will
contains the quote lines. To cancel the message quit without
saving.
Alt-1 to 9
9 SysOp or privileged user macros. Operated remotely with
^K1 to ^K9. The macros themselves are stored in the text
file QUICKED.MAC. The first line is macro 1. Lines beyond
9 are ignored. The character ^ may be used in the macro
file for control characters. ^^ is ^.
Privileged mode
Some special operations are available for privileged users These
operations are textfile reading/writing, usage of macro keys and
message uploading (if the sysop select them as privileged-only
in the configuration program). There is no need to enter a
password to use these special options: A special privileged
users list file holds the names of all the privileged users. The
sysop can set, temporarily, the current editing session to
privileged by pressing Alt-P. The privileged users list file is
called QUICKED.PRV. Each line contain the first and last name of
a privileged user just as it appears in the BBS.
Out File
^K^O (in privileged mode) will output the current message text
into a text file. Any split lines will be joined back, to
allow editing of textfiles with lines longer than 76 characters.
This means any paragraph typed without CR will be written as one
long line. Use ^Q^M to show wrapped line markers.
In File
^K^I (in privileged mode) will input a file into the current
message at the current cursor position. Warnings will be given
if there is not enough memory.
and if any control code was found in the file (it will be replaced
by a space).
You can also load a file into the Quote Window. Go into Quote Mode
(even if not replying any message) and press ^KI to load a file.
You may then move arround it, or quote lines from it into the message,
just as it was a regular quoted message.
QuickEd History
================
Version 1.02 additions
QuickEd now respects the QuickBBS idle time limit. It prints a warning
message and an audible warning 15 seconds before disconnecting.
Two new commands - ^KC and ^KF. These commands are used for message
formatting. ^KC centers the cursor line and ^KF flushes it against the
right margin. Both commands advance the cursor to the next line for easy
formatting of entire paragraphs.
Version 1.10 additions
- QuickEd now can be run from command-line, as a text editor. Just type
QUICKED filename
and QuickEd will enter file editing mode. You can enter file editing mode
from local or from remote. The Time Left and Idle Time will not be
displayed, and the file name will be displayed on the bottom line.
To save the file, press Ctrl-Z, and then you may change the file name to
save.
- New setup option that allows the sysop disable the local bell of QuickEd.
In this mode, the bell won't work even in demo mode.
- New setup option, to disable idle time check for local user (usually, sysop)
- External protocol for X/Y/Zmodem message upload. Zmodem may use AutoUpload
feature
- Optional Swapping QuickEd to EMS or Disk on Dos Shell and External Protocol
execution. Thus you have over 90k more ram for dos or external programs.
Note: this option disabled as default, for compatibility with previous
versions of QuickEd. See "Installation" below.
- A change in a key sequence - Zap line (^KZ) was changed to Purge Line (^KP)
to free up ^KZ for manual Zmodem upload (did anyone ever use Zap line?!..)
- Small bug fixes: Enter in the middle of the paragraph and exit with an empty
message.
Version 1.20 Additions
1. No need for auto-executing questionair. QuickEd reads username from the
SYSTEM.LOG. Thus no need for any instllation at all.
2. The support files HLP, PRV, CFG are looked in the folowing directories,
in this order:
a. current directory
b. in directory specified by SET QEDPATH=<dir>
c. in the home directory (where the .EXE file is)
3. All files (except MSGTMP) are opened in ReadOnly mode.
4. Parameter passing to the external protocol. Typical command line for DSZ
should be "port *p speed *s rz *f". The Automatic upgrage in QEDINST will
always add the *f, and will add the others only if the current string is
"rz" (or other 2 letters)
5. Reduced memory requirements: QuickEd can run with as little as 55K.
6. New buffer handling: QuickEd can load in file in virtually any size.
7. New editor command ^KN - New (clear current message from memory)
8. No option is now registered-only, except the name of the user on-line.
Thus, the sysop (even of unregistered version) can toggle the privileged
flag (Alt-P), and use any privileged option, or even let a remote user
use them.
9. Bug fixes:
Clear on Abort used to clear in funny colors.
Idle time set to Zero corrected and now will not check idle time (instead
of abort immediately)
Support for 9600, 19200 baud.
Future Features:
QuickEd could offer many more options, with a better interface to the
BBS. Options like: changing subject, toggle private mode, aliases
(where allowed), changing area (when a conversation changed subject,
answering on netmail) etc.
Also, Version 2 of QuickEd will support the VT-102 terminal emulated by
many of the new communications programs allowing much faster scrolling,
insert and delete operations- no need to redraw. QuickEd will
automatically detect this terminal if it supports the standard
identification strings.
Message encryption for really private messages. No more "private"
messages that can be read by any sysop. Private messages encrypted
using a password, that only can be read by those who know it.
We will keep the policy of making all controversial features (like
characters above 127, encryption, etc.) SysOp selectable. This way
non-network BBSes will have the freedom of choice.
