  7. Sign Friends is an interactive program designed to teach sign
  8. language utilizing the graphic  and animation capabilities of
  9. the computer.  Compressed  into two files, so that  it can be
  10. extracted  onto either  a  floppy or  hard  drive system,  it
  11. consists of  Sign Friends I  (file name is  SIGN33-A.EXE) and
  12. Sign  Friends  II  (file name  SIGN33-B.EXE).   A  .DOC  file
  13. (SIGN33.DOC) also accompanies  these, describing installation
  14. procedures.

  16. Written in GWBasic, the user will  need either that or BASICA
  17. if he/she has a true IBM and CGA capabilities in order to run
  18. the program.  Further details are described in a read.me file
  19. included with both programs.

  21. Sign Friends is  topically arranged according to  chapters of
  22. approximately seven  words each,  with the  exception of  the
  23. alphabet and  numbers.  There are over  200 words to  date in
  24. Sign  friends.  An  index  concludes  Sign Friends  I.   Each
  25. chapter  includes a  practice and  a  test portion.   Student
  26. results are displayed at the end  of each test.  Sign Friends
  27. is totally  menu-driven and  requires little  or no  computer
  28. competence for its  use.  The vocabulary is  on an elementary
  29. level,  little  reading  ability  is  required,  thus  it  is
  30. suitable  for use  with  children as  well  as adults.   Both
  31. programs include a fingerspeller.

  33. Topics  include, the  alphabet, numbers,  days  of the  week,
  34. colors,   interrogative   words,    emotions,   prepositions,
  35. important and  more important persons,  activities associated
  36. with morning  and evening, places, seasons,  cognitive words,
  37. basic survival words,  transportation, communication, setting
  38. the  table,  the  body in  space,  clothing,  medical  words,
  39. shopping, opposites and  more opposites, sports.  As  this is
  40. still being written many more topics  will be included in the
  41. future.

  43. Registration is requested but not required.   A fee of $30 or
  44. of any  amount will greatly aid  in the continuation  of this
  45. work, as well as feedback of any kind to:

  52. Sign  Friends was  written for  my  brain-injured child  who,
  53. while hearing,  is unable  to speak and  depends on  sign for
  54. expressive communication.   It is my  hope that a  world more
  55. fluent in  sign will be  a world  more accessible to  her and
  56. children like her.
