@MAJOR HEADING = II Ventura Publisher Training Word Processing
@TABLE HEAD = This document is meant to be used as a supplement to
the Xerox Ventura Publisher 1.1 Training Guide and Workbook.
@TABLE HEAD = Upon initially loading Ventura Publisher it contains
NO FILES. It is now up to you to load a file into Ventura Publisher.
To begin, we shall load a text file since this is the most common
application you will be performing.
@COLUMN HEADS = To Load a Text File:
@BULLET = Select the Frame Setting Function Box (The Cursor will change
to a plus sign).
@BULLET = Touch the Mouse Pointer to the File Menu (it will then Drop
Down displaying the available options).
@BULLET = Highlight Load Text/Picture and Click the Left Mouse Button
(You will now be presented with a dialog box displaying the available
file types, formats and numbers)
@BULLET = Select Text for Type of File if it is not already Selected
@BULLET = Select ASCII for Text Format
@BULLET = Click One for # of Files
@BULLET = Finally Click Ok
The Item Selector Box will appear and display all files in the current
directory which meet the criteria you have specified. Scroll if needed
to the file, click to select it and when satisfied Click Ok. For
our purposes, let's follow the Training Guide and Select ABOOK.TXT.
You will now see another dialog box informing you that the text file
is being loaded and hyphenated.
Ventura will load the file and format it according to the instructions
of the style sheet currently in use. Since we have not yet applied
a style sheet, the defaults (DEFAULT.STY) are used.
@TABLE HEAD = Formats and Word Processors
Let's stop for a moment and talk about Ventura Publisher's Interaction
with your word processor - although Ventura Publisher is an extremely
powerful tool for manipulating text and does contain elementary text
editing text editing functions it was not meant to be used as a stand
alone word processor. It contains no Search and Replace Functions,
no Spell Checking or Thesarsus functions so you will be using your
current word processor to prepare text files in an efficient manner.
The blessings of word processors are their many capabilities which
vary from one configuration to the next - but they tend to be nasty
little fellows when it comes to cooperating with other programs. Ventura
Publisher solves this problem for you by supporting a large selection
of the most commonly used Word Processing Formats.
@COLUMN HEADS = These Include:
@BULLET = File Type
@BULLET = ANY ASCII FILE .TXT
@BULLET = DCA (IBM MAINFRAME) .DCA
@BULLET = MicroSoft Word .DOC
@BULLET = MultiMate .DOC
@BULLET = WordPerfect .WP
@BULLET = WordStar US .WS
@BULLET = WordStar UK .TXT
@BULLET = Xerox Write .XWP
@BULLET = Xerox Writer UK .WXP
@BULLET = XyWrite .TXT
@COLUMN HEADS = So what does this mean to your documents?
Well, it is important to understand from the onset that while Ventura
Publisher supports SOME of the formatting information that you have
developed in your word processor, it does NOT SUPPORT ALL OF THE FORMATS
YOU DEVELOP.
@CHECK IT OUT = As a general rule VP supports left, right, bottom
and top page margins, font/style and point information (if your word
processor supports it), indents and tab stops and line spacing. VENTURA
WILL SUPPLY THE FORMATTING INFORMATION IN ITS OWN STYLE SHEETS SO
BEAR IN MIND THAT THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE TEXT FILES WITH YOUR WORD
PROCESSOR IS WITH A MINIMUM OF FORMATTING. IT IS ALSO BEST TO LEAVE
JUSTIFICATION AND TEXT ALIGNMENT TO VENTURA PUBLISHER - LEAVE YOUR
TEXT LEFT JUSTIFIED AND RAGGED RIGHT AND LET VENTURA DO THE REST.
ADDITIONALLY, ONLY INSERT A CARRIAGE RETURN INTO YOUR WORD PROCESSOR
WHEN YOU WISH TO SEPERATE ONE PARAGRAPH FROM THE NEXT. USE THE SOFT
RETURN (OR TEXT WRAP AROUND) FEATURE TO MOVE TO A NEW LINE. These
simple practices will save much time, trouble and frustration when
learning Ventura Publisher 1.1.
We shall now load two existing text files which the trainer has provided
to demonstrate the way Ventura treats excess returns entered into
a word processing file.

Now just bear in mind the differences beween the manner in which Ventura
Publisher 1.1 and your word processor handle returns and the impact
they will have on your document production.
