TOPBRD6B.DOC 11/01/88
The following is a list of what I feel are some of the best computer
Bulletin Boards around the country. Realizing full well that each
person will have a different set of priorities, I am including a
"justification" review text for each entry.
The most important part of this file is the justification text. This
text should allow others to "decide to try" or not. Pretend you are
telling your friend why he/she should dial up this particular board.
(Actually, that is how this file started!)
This file has received nice comments. Thanks. I am in no
way an expert on Boards, but it is my view that if others share their
experiences with mine, this list will grow and become a valuable tool to
newcomers to the 'boarding hobby'. There are many very good boards that
I have never heard of. Sorry if your favorite isn't in this list now.
If you care about your favorite board, put its name into this file and
send it back so others can share the wealth, or call the Cricket BBS.
The reviews within TOPBRD are my opinions only.
Please do enjoy the following great bulletin boards. (Only spread
out folks..let me know of other good boards. These have become very
busy since the cat escaped!)
Thanks, / o o \ 408/373-3773

CRICKET Sysop 1200/2400 8-N-1
PHONE STATE CITY SYSOP NAME
------------------------------------------------------------------------
202-547-2008 DC Washington Robert Blacher Computer Connections
1200/2400 PCBoard 12.1 w/ZMODEM 2 nodes
This is the home of the PD Software Reviews prepared by the
sysop. He reviews every uploaded file, and tells it like
he sees it. Reviews for the last two years are available
for search/review through a DOOR. There are no games, but
the files are the most up-to-date in the country! And Mr.
Blacher keeps a clean board, no junk here. Two nodes are
available, but one is $$ supported only. This is a tough
board on which to maintain a supportable upload/download
ratio, be prepared to upload only your very best! This
board is well worth the onetime $50.00 donation for the
second node.
919-471-8048 NC Durham Dave Miller R.T.A.
1200/2400 RBBS 16 w/ZMODEM
A good up-to-date system, that is compiled especially for
the sysop. You receive time credits for reading messages!
A software review conference has started. You can get
upload credit by writing good reviews! Look for the "*"
in the file lists, these files are recommended by Dave,
who knows his files! This one is getting better all the
time! Mail-in registration required.
415-964-9039 CA Palo Alto Jay Fox S.P.A.C.E.
1200/2400 PCBoard 12.1 w/ZMODEM 3 nodes
AKA 'The Stanford Palo Alto Computer Exchange'
The sysop has a great Zmodem DOOR operating, one of the
first. Good, cordial atmosphere, has the latest editions
of files. Jay knows ZMODEM and PCED and PROCOMM!
Three nodes, networked together, one for supporters only.
I don't know how big the system is, but the files are always
up-to-date and very well checked. This board will actually
help you without making you feel foolish.
408-728-5598 CA Watsonville Jim Bready Night Modulators
1200/2400 Auntie w/ZMODEM
The BBS software is Wes Meier's AUNTIE, which allows multi
-line descriptions. The Sysop reviews every file left
on the board. This is a hobbiest's board, but one of the
best. Serious users won't be un-happy, yet games are here
too. A very refreshing attitude, we call the sysop a
"laid back professional". Only the best...
A free board, everyone gets 60 minutes. (Jim got me to
remove the "letter grades" in topbrd!)
707-778-8944 CA Petaluma Vern Buerg VOR RBBS
1200/2400 PCBoard w/ZMODEM
The busiest board in town! You will have to use your
auto-dialer to get on to this one. And the 'allfiles' list
un-arcs into more than one 360kb diskette! It includes
descriptive comments on each. Everyone gets 45 minutes,
uploads are not required. But use your time wisely.
Mr. Buerg writes good software, and keeps a good board.
Message base time doesn't count in your 45 minutes.
NEW: Vern has opened a $$$ support multi-node setup.
$25.00 per year, call the above for info.
201-729-7410 NJ Newark Paul Kopit Software Society
1200/2400 PCBoard 12.1 w/ZMODEM 2 nodes
Robert Blacher recommended this one, and so does everyone
else who finds it.
316-684-8744 KN Wichita Gizmo Information Booth
1200/2400/9600/19,200 PCBoard 12.1
The home of VERSAdial...for PCPursuiters. This is also
a very well kept board, interesting. There is a tricky
sign-on Script you must pass through to get on, have
PrtScrn ready to assist you. There is a good QuickBASIC
and 'C' conference here. (Even though this is the home
of VERSA, this board is not in the PCPursuit network.)
IBMBDS, PCP-EXTR, SANUV, P-OPT, and REMCHR8 are maintained
here. No games, no music.
415-332-1655 CA Sausalito Al Kalian Palladin BBS
1200/2400 Auntie w/ZMODEM
This is a small BBS, but the Sysop really cares about
quality and the shareware philosophy. Refreshing!
A good clientele provides helpful message base, and the
library of Public Domain / Shareware is one of the best.
Lots of good LOTUS stuff, and Vern Buerg utilities. It's
hard to find uploads that he doesn't have.
818-894-1248 CA Sepulveda Ken Ough The Lunacy PCBoard
818-894-1470 1200/2400/9600 A three node massive system
818-894-0741 This is probably the most extensive and largest BBS around!
The ALLFILES.ARC file will unARC to over 600k! The SysOp
runs over 460mb of hard disk space, and all files are
thoroughly tested and updated. In addition, this is the hang
out for several shareware authors uploading their latest files.
You will even find some of the greatest shareware updates being
beta tested for you to download before they are released to
the public. You will actually be able to see these files now!
There are several conferences on this board, including one the
largest PCjr conferences in the country, a Games Conference
with in excess of 650 game files, and a Movies Conference where
several Hollywood writers report on the latest. There is also
a very complete and extensive Astronomy Conference. This board's
file section is the best maintained I have seen, and even
though you will receive 60 minutes of time each day, it's just
not enough to review all the new files and features of this
board. The SysOp runs a three node system, networked together.
The latest file transfer protocols are available, including
Zmodem-batch, Ymodem-batch, Ymodem-g batch, and much more.
It is well worth your time to call this board, again and again.
818-906-8683 CA Sherman Oaks Mike Part Wicked Scherzo
1200/2400 a "conversation" BBS
This is a very special-purpose BBS designed for
professional, active screen-writers, and/or AA members.
The Sysop has been known to allow polite, semi-literate
visitors inside based upon his totally capricious evaluation
of the Comment which prospective new users must leave for
access. This is a very nice PCB setup, not a files BBS.
305-627-6969 FL TCI RBBS
1200/2400 RBBS 16.
For PCPursuiters who are really interested in maintaining
a good PCP system. The sysop collects/validates
PCPursuit telephone numbers. He is also an author/tester
of RBBS bulletin board software.
408-745-0880 CA Sunnyvale D.Jones/D.Hewes LogOn Sunnyvale
300/1200 7 lines
This is the place to call when all the other lines are
busy. There are 7 lines available on the same number!
There are many files here, lots of games. The uploads are
shifted into the many directories regularly. There is a
wide variety of files here, including quite a few Commadore
files. This is a Public Domain Software Exchange board.
Requires mail-in registration. Tax deductible donation
will increase your time and privileges. Clientele composed
of real computer "pro's" willing and able to provide help.
The messages bases suggest AA rating, but Xmodem and Ymodem
are the only transfer protocols supported.
415-937-0156 CA Walnut Creek Wes Meier Walnut Creek BBS
1200/2400 WC BBS w/ZMODEM
The author of AUNTIE, which is used here, on V.Buerg's,
Jim Bready's, Al Kalian's, and Don Watkin's board.
Note that those who use Meier's BBS software also run
only the best boards! The AUNTIE isn't for sale, and
you've got to care about BBSing to get it!
602-279-2673 AZ Phoenix Samuel Smith The Tool Shop
1200/2400 PCBoard 12.1 w/ZMODEM
Specializing in software tools: Turbo Pascal, C, ADA.
The sysop is the author of ProDOOR! We're all waiting
for his BBS software to appear! (grin) Too bad Sam
doesn't run 2 nodes, it gets busy.
602-899-4876 AZ Phoenix Technoids Annonymous
1200/2400 PCBoard 12.0 w/ZMODEM
Lotsa files, good programming conference.
A beta site for ProDOORs, (next door to the Tool Shop!)
