  2.                       Welcome to QEdit version 2.07!
  3.  
  4. This is the shareware version of QEdit.  Many hours of work have gone
  5. into the development of QEdit - over 3 man years, as of this version,
  6. and that does not include all the time spent on our new users guide/
  7. reference manual.  In addition, we provide full-time technical support,
  8. via phone during normal business hours, or mail if you prefer. What is
  9. the point of all this?  QEdit is a professionally developed, packaged,
  10. and supported product.  Our product has received excellent reviews, and
  11. our new manual and our product support are second to none. Just ask some
  12. of our users.  We send out update notices to all registered users, and
  13. regularly incorporate suggested changes into the product as we are able.
  14.  
  15. The only way we can continue to provide products like QEdit and to offer
  16. outstanding technical support, is if we stay in business; and the only
  17. way we can stay in business is if you register your copy of QEdit.  We
  18. like the shareware concept, and we would like to stay a part of it.  But
  19. we can do so only through registrations of QEdit.  Please don't take this
  20. the wrong way - try out QEdit for 30 days or so, under no obligation
  21. whatsoever.  But if you continue to use it after that 30-day period,
  22. please pay for your copy.  Thanks!

  26. Please review the contents of this file before using QEdit.  It contains
  27. helpful information on the operation of QEdit and how to get assistance when
  28. you need it.  The Release Notes for version 2.07 (section 3) contain an
  29. explanation of all features and changes in this release.  For your

  50.     Q.EXE           The editor program.  This is the only file required to

  56.     READ.ME         The file you are currently reading.

  70.     The ONLY file required to run QEdit is Q.EXE - the others are not
  71.     required or used by the program.

  73.     QEdit comes pre-configured to work on a large range of monitors. Because
  74.     of this, the default colors are set up for a monochrome system. If you
  75.     have a color system and would like to edit in color, then run the
  76.     configuration program (QCONFIG), select the C)olors/screen options, and
  77.     change the default colors.

  79.     Please, make sure you read this entire file in order to take full
  80.     advantage of the new commands/features in QEdit.

  87.     entire read.me file to determine if it solves your problem.  If you

  173. *   - MarkCharacter
  174. *     Defines the start of a character block.  Similar to the DropAnchor
  175. *     command, except the cursor position is NOT included in the block.
  176. *
  177. *     This command is provided as a replacement for the DropAnchor command -
  178. *     if you want the cursor position included in the block, continue to use
  179. *     DropAnchor; otherwise replace the DropAnchor command with this command.

  181. *   - MarkColumn        <Alt K>
  182. *     Defines the start of a column block.  Similar to the DropAnchor
  183. *     command, except the block is a column block.  All the normal block
  184. *     commands except DeleteBlock can be used with column blocks.  To delete
  185. *     a column block, use the "Cut" command.

  187. *   - CopyOverBlock     <Alt Z>
  188. *     Copies the currently marked column block and places it on top of any
  189. *     text at the current position.  This command only works with column
  190. *     blocks.

  192. *   - PasteOver         <Ctrl PrtSc>
  193. *     Takes the column block in the cut/paste buffer and places it on top of
  194. *     any text at the current position.  This command only works with column
  195. *     blocks.

  197.     - ExecuteScrap      <Ctrl Enter>
  198.       Plays back the latest macro that was created using the MacroRecord
  199.       command.

  201.     - ToggleBoxDraw     <Shift F1>
  202.       Toggles Box Drawing mode ON and OFF.  If ON, the cursor movement keys
  203.       (up, down, right, left) will "draw" lines in the text, both up/down and
  204.       right/left.  Very useful for creating charts and tables. The letter "B"
  205.       will appear on the Statusline when this mode is ON.

  207.     - ToggleSmartTabs   <Ctrl QT>
  208.       Toggles SmartTabs ON and OFF.  If ON, the tab right (and left) keys
  209.       will position the cursor below the beginning of the next (or previous)
  210.       word on the line immediately above the current cursor line.

  212.     - ToggleTabsExpand  <Alt V>
  213.       Toggles Physical Tab Expansion ON and OFF.  If ON, physical tab
  214.       characters (ASCII 9's) found in a file will be expanded into spaces
  215.       according to the Physical Tab Width set in QCONFIG.  If OFF, physical
  216.       tabs will be displayed on the screen.

  218.     - ToggleTabsOut     <Alt I>
  219.       Toggles Physical Tab Insertion ON and OFF.  If ON, continuous spaces in
  220.       a line of text will be replaced with physical tabs (ASCII 9's) *IN*
  221.       edited lines according to the Physical Tab Width set in QCONFIG.

  223.     The following commands are for use with EGA or VGA cards only. These
  224.     commands can be executed only while a single window is open.
  225.  
  226. *   - SetEGA25
  227. *     Switches to 25 line mode.  This command does nothing if the video card
  228. *     is not an EGA or VGA type card.

  230. *   - SetEGA43
  231. *     Switches to 43 or 50 line mode, depending on the video card being an
  232. *     EGA or VGA type card, respectively.  This command does nothing if the
  233. *     video card is not an EGA or VGA type card.

  236. *     Toggles between 25 and 43/50 line mode, depending on the video card

  286.     - A "Flicker" option for fast screen updating has been added for users of
  287.       old style CGA's.

  291. *     like.  For example, you could use the graphic double bar, the single
  292. *     bar, or the underline.

  304.     - QEdit v2.04 macros are NOT compatible with this version of QEdit.
  305.       Versions 2.00-2.03 macros should work fine, but there was a
  306.       problem with the 2.04 format.

  309.       not a .com file as in previous versions.

  315.     - CurrentFilename
  316.       Returns the name of the file being edited.  For example, this
  317.       macro could be defined in the qconfig.dat file as follows:

  319.       @t  macro_begin gsave dos 'tpc ' current_filename return

  321.       When <Alt T> is pressed, this would save all the changed files being
  322.       edited, and then invoke the command tpc on the current file.  Be
  323.       sure and leave a space after the command (as in the example).

  325.     - KillFile  <Ctrl KZ>
  326.       Erases the currently edited file from disk.

  328.     - InsertDate
  329.       Inserts the system date at the current cursor position.

  332.       Inserts the system time at the current cursor position.

  334.     - ShowEntryScreen <Shift F10>
  335.       Displays the original DOS screen.  This will only work if "save
  336.       entry screen" is set to TRUE in QCONFIG.

  339.       Appends the currently marked block to the named scratch buffer.

  345.       Changed edit file prompt to not exit on escape from directory
  346.       picker.  Now allows alpha key entry to move to a requested file.
  347.       Top line of directory "picker" now has the current directory.

  352.     - Statusline format changed slightly.  "I" and "A" are now used for
  353.       "Ins" and "Indent", respectively.  "W" is used for wordwrap,

  359.     - "quit to opening menu" commands re-implemented via a switch in the
