@FIRSTPAR = For those of us who are Hewlett-Packard LaserJet users
the advantages and flexibility of Adobe's PostScript Fonts have long
been a source of consternation. The ability of a PostScript Laser
Printer (such as the Apple Laser Writer) to scale Fonts upon request
is doubtless envied by all LaserJet users. HP LaserJets Fonts (as
well as all others on the market for this laser printer) are provided
in standard point sizes, usually ranging from 8 to a maximum of 30
points in height. Applications, however, often make the use of a special
point size highly desirable.
The 30 point limit (or 40 point if you have one of the nicer font
families) which is imposed upon the LaserJet family is also too limiting
- situations quite often develop (such as headlines, special documents)
that make a 60-72 point or greater point size character much in demand. Unfortunately,
if you are using an HP LaserJet Plus (or Series II) with the software
that is commonly available today this capability is merely a pipe
dream. Or is it?
@SUBHEAD = The TypeFoundry Series
Weep no longer - BitStream Corporation and Softcraft Inc. of Madison,
Wis. have teamed together to make the scalable font available to HP
LaserJet Users.
Bitstream is the leading source of Type Designs for IBM PC based
Desktop Publishing and has converted all of the popular font styles
used in PostScript printers to Hewlett-Packard format. More importantly
of course is the manner in which this has been done: Bitstream's new
TypeFoundry Series does not use the bit-mapped version which other
HP fonts incorporate, but rather utilizes a Font Outline (ala PostScript)
which can be used as an INTELLIGENT font. Used in tandem with the
Installation Utilities provided, this can be used to provide you with
a virtually unlimited number of sizes as well as all of the popular
character sets.
The SoftCraft Fontware Installation Program uses these font outlines
and will produce as many font files as you desire - the most commonly
used sizes can be produced automatically as well, making installation
a snap. If you wish to add specialized sizes and styles, you simply
specify the font file format, along with the symbol set and the program
will produce font you request.
Currently, SoftCraft is offering 20 typeface families (which constitute
80 faces) with BitStream offering more each quarter from their ever-expanding
type library.

@SUBHEAD = Compatibility/Flexibility
The fonts which are created can be used in many of the popular laser
and dot matrix printers. Font files can be easily produced in HP
soft font format (both portrait and landscape) as well as in SoftCraft
format for use with the SoftCraft line (see bulletin on Fancy Font
and Fancy Word) with a large variety of laser and dot matrix printers.
When you install the TypeFroundry Fonts you may produce fonts in
any size from 3 to 120 points, including fractional sizes. Additionally,
though the HP limits soft fonts to 30 points or smaller, some printers
(such as the HP LaserJet Series II) can accept fonts up to 120 points
in size. SoftCraft's line of utilities (such as Fancy Font/Word)
can also produce fonts in any size on supported printers.
The font outlines all contain 560 characters each, including many
symbols, foreign characters and typographic elements. Currently,
many different symbols sets are supported and the Installation Program
allows you to choose from among many sets which include:
@BULLET = IBM PC
@BULLET = HP Roman8
@BULLET = Windows/ANSII
@BULLET = Ventura
@BULLET = USASCII
@BULLET = Legal
@BULLET = French
@BULLET = German
Other sets can be just as easily incorporated and you may also define
your own custom symbol set from among the 560 available characters
for other foreign languages or math, scientific and special applications.
@SUBHEAD = System Requirements

with MS-DOS or PC-DOS 3.1 or later - at least 512K of system memory
- a hard disk drive - any printer or soft- ware that is capable of

@SUBHEAD = Installation Program
The SoftCraft Fontware Installation Program is also available seperately
and requires one or more of the outline font packages.
