HOW TO UNPROTECT "SpssPc" (tm)
WITHOUT PROGRAM MODIFICATIONS
If you wish to run "SpssPc" (ver. 1.1) from a hard disk, but
are annoyed by the requirement for having the original disk 1 in
drive A, then read on....
Part of this ARC file is the program "SPSSFIX.COM". All you
have to do is to include this program in your "autoexec" file when
running SpssPc. For instance, your "autoexec.bat" might look like
this:
DATE
TIME
SPSSFIX
(rest of autoexec.bat)
.
.
.
That's all there is to it. SpssPC will no longer look for the
key disk in drive A.
How does SPSSFIX.COM work?
The protection logic for SpssPC is quite simple. On side 0, track 0E
(hex) SpssPC searches for several "weird" sectors. SpssPC screens
the disk I/O calls and when it sees a request for track 0E, it
sends back a return code indicating that the sectors on this track
were successfully found.
Note: this program was written for SpssPC version 1.1. It may not
work with subsequent versions if the protection scheme has been
changed.
