LABEL MAKER 6.04
FEATURES
THE LABEL MAKER has the following features:
1. Automatically reads and prints all file names.
2. Handles sub-directories.
3. Allows entry of a disk name.
4. Allows either 4 or 8 lines of comments depending on which version you
are running.
5. Prints on 3 1/2" x 15/16" or 4" x 1 7/16" labels.
6. Prints 1 to 4 labels as necessary.
7. Print multiple labels with one input.
8. Permits you to print only the disk name, list of sub-directories, and
comments.
9. Allows you to edit the title and comments for a label.
10. Allows you to configure your program to match your system.
THE LABEL MAKER works best on an IBM or Epson dot matrix printer but will work
on any printer capable of enlarged and compressed print mode. Source is
provided to allow it to be customized for other printers.
The current Label Maker distribution diskette files are:
XXXX A file that contains the address of the distributor and the
number of the diskette.
LBL.BAT A batch file to run the program.
LBLDLIB.EXE The LBL program that reads the file names from the target disk.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING A DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEM
THIS SECTION APPLIES TO DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEMS ONLY. IF
YOU HAVE A FIXED DISK SYSTEM, REFER TO "FIXED DISK SYSTEM"
LATER IN THIS DOCUMENT.
Before using the LABEL MAKER, a back-up diskette must be created. This will
become the working diskette. The master diskette contains initialized data
files and is only used to create working copies. Any other use of the master
diskette should be avoided.
1 Insert your DOS diskette in drive A and close the drive door.
2 Switch your computer on.
If your computer is already on, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del
keys (System Reset).
3 Type the date and press Enter.
4 Type the time and press Enter.
5 At the DOS prompt, insert a new disk into Drive B.
6 Type:
A>format b:/s
and press Enter
7 For PC-Dos type: A>copy BASICA.COM b: and press Enter
For MS-Dos type: A>copy BASIC*.* b: and press Enter
8 Remove the DOS diskette from drive A and put it away in a safe place.
9 Place the Label Maker distribution diskette into drive A.
10 If you are using an AT&T computer go to 11. Otherwise Type:
A>lblsetup
and press Enter
11 If you are running on an AT&T Computer then Type:
A>lblsetup ATT
and press Enter
12 Remove the Label Maker master diskette and put it away in a safe place.
13 Place the disk you just created in drive A and change the default
drive back to drive A.
14 The disk just created is your working copy of Label Maker.
Page 4
USING THE LABEL MAKER
The working disk you have just created contains the LABEL MAKER programs and
data files and runs in the default drive. As the diskettes are read, the data
is written to the files on the program diskette in the default drive,
therefore, the program diskette must not be write protected and should never be
removed from the default drive while the program is running.
Place the program disk you just created into the default drive and if the
computer is turned off, turn it on. When the prompt comes up, type:
A>LBL [d:]
where d: is the disk designation of the drive you want to use for labeling
the disks.
After each label is written, the program will return to the prompt of the
default disk and the next disk is then inserted into the working disk and the
program is restarted.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING A FIXED DISK SYSTEM
THIS SECTION APPLIES TO FIXED DISK SYSTEMS ONLY. IF YOU
HAVE A DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEM, REFER TO "DISKETTE-BASED
SYSTEM" EARLIER IN THIS DOCUMENT.
1 Switch your computer on.
If your computer is already on, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys
(System Reset).
2 Type the date and press Enter.
3 Type the time and press Enter.
4 At the DOS prompt, type:
d:
Note: When using a fixed disk system, you
can specify which drive Label Maker is on.
The d parameter denotes any fixed disk
drive you wish to install Label Maker on.
and press Enter.
5 Place your Label Maker distribution diskette in Drive A.
6 If you are using an AT&T computer go to 7. Otherwise Type:
d>a:lblfdset
and press Enter
Page 5
7 If you are running on an AT&T Computer then Type:
d>a:lblfdset ATT
and press Enter
8 Either copy the BASICA files to this subdirectory or set the PATH
so they will be found.
9 Remove the Label Maker master diskette and put it away in a safe place.
10 You can now run the Label Maker program from the hard disk and use
either Drive A or Drive B for the floppy disk to be labeled.
USING THE LABEL MAKER
The \lblmaker subdirectory you have just created contains the LABEL MAKER
programs. As the diskettes are read, the data is written to the hard disk,
therefore, you should have the \lblmaker subdirectory on your hard disk
designated as your default drive while the program is running.
The prompt for the hard disk should be:
d:\lblmaker
If this is not the situation, place yourself in this subdirectory of your
fixed disk and place the disk to be labeled in one of the floppy drives.
Then type:
d:\lblmaker>LBL [d:]
where d: is the disk designation of the drive you want to use for labeling
the disks.
After each label is written, the program will return to the prompt of the
default disk and the next disk is then inserted into the working disk and the
program is restarted.
***** NOTE *****
If you have not registered the program, it will be necessary for you to run the
installation program each time you start the program to make a label.
After the program has been registered, you can run the installation program one
time and it will be necessary to run this program if you want to change the
parameters.

RECONFIGURING THE PROGRAM FOR OTHER PRINTERS
Many people are having trouble configuring the print program to run with
their printer. I will offer a few tips for those people who desire to try their
hand at reconfiguring LBLPNT60.BAS.
Subroutine 1500 is used to set the majority of the printers to print the
title.
Subroutine 1600 is used to reset the printers after the title is printed.
Subroutine 2000 is used to set the majority of the printers to print the
lines of file names.
Subroutine 2100 resets the printers after the file names have been printed.
For those with other types of printers, subroutine 4500 sets the printer
and prints the necessary information. You can modify this routine to contain
any of the control codes unique to your printer that will give you the desired
characteristics.
Study of your printer manual will give you the necessary control codes to
modify these subroutines to meet your needs.

REVISIONS TO LABEL MAKER
Version 1.0 - Printed on small labels (3 1/2" x 15/16") using an Epson or IBM
graphics printer. (5/15/84)
Version 2.0 - Printed on large labels (4" x 1 7/16") using an Epson or IBM
graphics printer. (6/07/84)
Version 3.0 - Same as Version 2.0 but also supports any printer with expanded
and compressed mode capability. (6/24/84)
Version 4.0 - Same as Version 3.0 but will permit you to use either small or
large labels. (8/14/85)
Version 4.1 - Permits printing another copy of label and changing Master disk
or not. (10/29/85)
Version 4.2 - Permits specifying number of labels to be printed. One of them
can be a Master label. (1/09/86)
Version 5.0 - A complete reworking and reorganizing to make program more
efficient. (5/09/86)
Version 5.1 - Changed to support more printers, support MSDOS and allow the
printing of only the disk name, sub-directories, and comments
on a label. (6/11/86)
Version 6.0 - Reworked to include an installation program that allows for one
time installation of colors, sound, and printer type. Allows the
disk title and comments to be edited. (8/10/86)
Version 6.01- The size of the labels is included in the installation program.
(9/05/86)
Version 6.02- Contains a print file for the AT&T computer and corrects a minor
bug in the print routine. (9/25/86)
Version 6.03- Inserts name of registered owner. (11/06/86)
Version 6.04- Corrects a minor bug that occurred if your disk contained 61-65
files. Tells you how many lines of comments you can place on the
disk before asking for the comments.
I would like to thank all of the users who have made meaningful suggestions to
improve the program. These suggestions are always welcomed and those that
appear to have merit are included in the next revisions if possible.
One of the many suggestions that many people give is they want to be able to
label the next disk without having to return to DOS and rerun the program. The
way the program is written, this is necessary because there are two assembly
language programs that are run for each disk to read the file names and
statistics off of the target disk.
You can improve the performance of the program by using a spooler. Set up a
spooler and while your label is being printer, you can exit to DOS and run the
program again for the next disk. You will find that by the time you have
finished printing the label, you can be ready to print another.
