WELL INFORMATION SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION
--------------------------------------
THE WELL INFORMATION SYSTEM IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH
DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS. THE WELL INFORMATION SYSTEM WAS
WRITTEN FOR THE OIL INDUSTRY. IT MONITORS THE STATUS OF WELLS
FROM "PROSPECTS" TO "PRODUCING" WELLS. THE DATABASE CONCEPTS USED
IN THIS DEMO DISK CAN EASILY BE EXPANDED TO MEET ALL OF YOUR OTHER
INFORMATION NEEDS IN THE AREAS OF PRODUCTION, LAND/LEASE, GEOLOGY,
ENGINEERING, EQUIPMENT INVENTORY, WELL TESTS, BUDGETS, ETC. ALSO,
HIGH RESOLUTION GRAPHICS CAN BE INCLUDED IN THESE SYSTEMS.
EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME OF YOUR COMPANY'S INFORMATION ON THE
COMPUTER, SIMPLE INTERFACES CAN BE WRITTEN SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO
INPUT THE SAME INFORMATION TWICE.
IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION NEEDS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN FULFILLED WITH
YOUR CURRENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS, WE WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE WITH YOU HOW
WE COULD MEET YOUR COMPANY'S INFORMATION NEEDS. NO JOB IS TOO BIG
OR TOO SMALL FOR OUR COMPANY.
THIS SYSTEM IS MENU DRIVEN. SELECTIONS ARE MADE BY USING THE UP AND
DOWN ARROW KEYS TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR SELECTION. THEN PRESS THE ENTER
KEY TO MAKE THE SELECTION.
THE THREE MAIN MENU SELECTIONS ARE (1) MAINTAIN WELL INFORMATION,
(2) MAINTAIN MONTHLY DATA AND (3) GENERATE REPORTS.
CHOOSING "MAINTAIN WELL INFORMATION" FROM THE MAIN MENU WILL THEN
GIVE YOU A CHOICE OF THREE OPTIONS: (1) BROWSE WELLS, (2) REINDEX
THE WELLS, AND (3) REMOVE DELETED WELLS.
"BROWSE WELLS" IS THE CHOICE WHICH DEMONSTRATES THE POWER OF
DATABASE MANAGEMENT QUERIES. WHEN YOU FIRST GET TO THIS BROWSE
SCREEN YOU WILL BE VIEWING ALL OF THE WELLS SORTED BY THEIR
WELL NAMES. FROM THIS SCREEN YOU CAN THEN DO ONE OF SEVERAL
THINGS. FIRST, YOU CAN USE THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS TO HIGHLIGHT
ONE OF THE WELLS. SECOND, YOU CAN USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT ARROW
KEYS TO SEE OTHER INFORMATION CURRENTLY OFF THE BROWSE SCREEN. THIRD,
YOU CAN USE THE [PgDn] OR [PgUp] KEYS TO SCROLL A SCREEN AT A TIME.
FOURTH YOU CAN ENTER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING LETTERS TO PERFORM A
SPECIFIC FUNCTION. THE LETTERS AND FUNCTIONS ARE:
R - RESEARCH - THIS LETS YOU CHANGE THE SORT ORDER OF THE
DATA YOU ARE VIEWING. IT ALSO LETS YOU RESTRICT THE
DATA YOU ARE VIEWING. IT ALSO LETS YOU CHANGE THE FIELD
THAT YOU CAN SEARCH ON. FOR EXAMPLE, YOU MIGHT WANT TO
DO "RESEARCH" ON ONLY WELLS IN CUSTER COUNTY WHICH
ARE IN THE RED FORK FORMATION, AND THEN SEARCH FOR THEM
BY THEIR WELL NAME.
V - VIEW - THIS LETS YOU VIEW ANY ONE OR ALL OF THE FOUR
WELL SCREENS. EACH SCREEN RELATES TO DIFFERENT INFORMATION.
FOR EXAMPLE, SCREEN 1 IS PROSPECT/LAND DATA, SCREEN 2 IS
GEOLOGICAL DATA, SCREEN 3 IS DRILLING/COMPLETION DATA, AND
SCREEN 4 IS PRODUCTION DATA.
T - TOP - THIS PUTS YOU BACK TO THE TOP OF THE FILE.
B - BOTTOM - THIS PUTS YOU DOWN TO THE END OF THE FILE.
L - LOCATE FIRST - THIS LETS YOU SEARCH THE FILE FOR THE FIRST
OCCURENCE OF WHAT YOU ARE SEARCHING FOR. WHEN YOU FIRST
ENTER THE BROWSE MODE YOU CAN SEARCH BY WELL NAME. FOR
EXAMPLE, YOU MIGHT WANT TO SEARCH THE FILE FOR THE FIRST
OCCURENCE OF "WILSON" IN A WELL NAME. YOU WOULD THEN BE
POINTING AT "WILSON #01".
N - NEXT LOCATE - THIS LETS YOU SEARCH THE FILE FOR THE NEXT
OCCURENCE OF WHAT YOU HAVE JUST SEARCHED FOR. IF YOU PRESS
"N" AFTER FIRST LOCATING "WILSON #01" YOU WOULD THEN BE
POINTING AT "WILSON #02" SINCE IT ALSO CONTAINS "WILSON" IN
ITS NAME.
F - FIND FIRST - THIS WORKS JUST LIKE "LOCATE FIRST" EXCEPT THAT
IT IS ONLY USED FOR SEARCHES BY "TOWNSHIP & RANGE" WHEN THE
DATA IS ALREADY SORTED BY LOCATION. THERE IS NO NEED TO HAVE
A "NEXT FIND" SINCE IT WILL ALWAYS BE THE NEXT RECORD.
S - SCROLL - THIS LETS YOU VIEW A SUMMARY OF ALL THE WELL
INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THE FOUR SCREENS FOR ONE WELL
AT A TIME. IT WILL THEN LET YOU SCROLL FORWARD OR
BACKWARD THROUGH THE SUMMARY SCREENS.
C - COLUMN SWAP - THIS LETS YOU CHOOSE WHAT COLUMNS YOU WANT
TO VIEW IN THE FULL SCREEN BROWSE MODE. EACH TIME YOU DO
A COLUMN SWAP, YOU WILL ADD A NEW COLUMN AND REMOVE ONE
OF THE CURRENT COLUMNS. YOU CAN DO THIS AS MANY TIMES
AS YOU WISH DURING A BROWSE.
I - INSTANT EDIT - THIS LETS YOU INSTANTLY CHANGE THE FIELD
WHICH IS CURRENTLY HIGHLIGHTED. ONLY "EDIT FIELDS" CAN BE
CHANGED BY THIS METHOD. "VIEW FIELDS" MUST BE CHANGED WITH
THE NORMAL "EDIT" MODE. TO CHANGE A FIELD JUST TYPE IN THE
CORRECT INFORMATION AND PRESS "ENTER". YOU WILL BE PROMPTED
"ARE YOU SURE..." TO VERIFY YOUR DECISION.
A - ADD - THIS LETS YOU ADD MORE WELLS TO THE DATABASE.
E - EDIT - THIS LETS YOU CHANGE INFORMATION ABOUT THE WELL
WHICH IS CURRENTLY HIGHLIGHTED. YOU CAN EDIT ONE SCREEN
OR ALL FIVE SCREENS CONSECUTIVELY.
D - DELETE - THIS LETS YOU DELETE THE WELL WHICH IS CURRENTLY
HIGHLIGHTED. YOU WILL BE PROMPTED "ARE YOU SURE..." TO VERIFY
YOUR DECISION. DELETED WELLS ARE STILL IN THE DATABASE BUT
CAN NOT BE SEEN. THEY ARE PERMANENTLY REMOVED WITH THE
"REMOVE DELETED WELLS" OPTION. THERE ARE WAYS TO RESTORE
A DELETED WELL IF NECESSARY.
M - MONTHLY - THIS WILL LET YOU BROWSE ALL THE MONTHLY DATA FOR
THE WELL THAT WAS HIGHLIGHTED WHEN YOU TYPED "M". IF THERE
IS NO MONTHLY DATA FOR THAT WELL, THEN YOU WILL BE BROWSING
THE ENTIRE MONTHLY DATABASE.
Q - QUIT - THIS WILL QUIT THE BROWSE AND RETURN YOU BACK TO THE
MAIN MENU.
CHOOSING "REINDEX THE WELLS" SHOULD ONLY BE SELECTED IF ONE OF THE
INDEX FILES BECOMES CORRUPTED. A MESSAGE WILL USUALLY DISPLAY IF
THIS HAPPENS.
CHOOSING "REMOVE DELETED WELLS" SHOULD BE SELECTED PERIODICALLY
TO PERMANENTLY REMOVE DELETED WELLS FROM THE DATABASE. A WELL
CAN BE RESTORED BEFORE CHOOSING THIS OPTION, BUT NOT AFTER.
CHOOSING "MAINTAIN MONTHLY DATA" LETS YOU BROWSE, REINDEX, OR
REMOVE DATA FROM THE MONTHLY DATABASE.
CHOOSING "GENERATE REPORTS" WOULD NORMALLY GIVE YOU A CHOICE OF
VARIOUS REPORTS. SPACE LIMITATIONS ON THE DEMO DISK HAVE FORCED
US TO REMOVE THIS OPTION.
GRAPHICS CAPABILITIES CAN ALSO BE ADDED TO THESE DATABASE SYSTEMS
TO VIEW VIRTUALLY ANY DATA. GRAPHICS IS VERY USEFUL FOR MONTHLY
PRODUCTION, MONTHLY REVENUES, OR MONTHLY WELL TEST DATA.
THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN THIS DEMO IT WILL CREATE ALL OF THE INDEX
FILES IT NEEDS. THIS WILL TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO INITIALIZE THE SYSTEM.
