INSTALLATION
NOTE: For those currently using VITACAL 2.0/2.2 and
upgrading to VITACAL 2.3, copy EXE files ONLY. DO NOT
copy the new data files to your working disks.
This installation discussion assumes you have the two
distribution disks that contain the programs and the
data files. If you have them in a compressed format,
such as one designed for storage on a BBS, you will need
to run the appropriate program to return them to normal
size before attempting anything further.
What you need to type will be in all CAPITAL letters
followed by the symbol <CR>. <CR> indicates you should
press the Carriage Return (or equivalent key) on your
computer. Information on what is happening and what you
should do will be in primarily lower case, like this
paragraph.
Failure to run the UTILITIES program has been the most
common problem. You MUST run (8) UTILITIES segment (4)
SETTINGS to tell VITACAL where you are putting your data
files.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| |
| *** NOTE: *** |
| |
| You MUST run the UTILITIES program the |
| first time you run VITACAL to tell the |
| programs where the data is located. |
| Otherwise the programs will not run. |

| HARD DISK USERS |
+------------------+
There are three batch files included on Disk 1 for
installation of VITACAL on Drive C: of a Hard Disk
system.
VI-INSTL.BAT - copies installation batch to hard disk
HDINSTL.BAT - Installation program
It makes the following subdirectories on the hard
disk and copies the appropriate program files.
C:\VITA
C:\VITA\FOD
C:\VITA\PRS
VITACAL.BAT - runs VITACAL
To Install VITACAL, put disk #1 in Drive A:, move to
Drive C: and type
A:VI-INSTL <CR>
The batch file will tell you when to swap Master Disks.
After you have installed VITACAL on your Hard Disk:
Type
VITACAL <CR>
Select Option 8 to run the UTILITIES program. Then
perform segment (4) 'Settings' to tell VITACAL where you
are keeping your data files. If you ran the
installation program without change, then the
information shown will be correct and all you need to do
is press the F10 key. If you used a hard drive other
than C: or some set of subdirectories other than those
called for in the installation program, then you MUST
specify them so the program can find its data files.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Installation 8
+-----------------------+
| FLOPPY DRIVE SYSTEM |
+-----------------------+
There is not a requirement to 'Install' Vitacal on a
floppy disk system: it will run as delivered on the
floppy disks (after the UTILITIES, of course), but I
highly recommend you make backups of the Master Disks
and run the program from them. As Disk 2 includes the
documentation files, there is not enough room to have
more than one person's data file on it. When copying
the master Disk 2, I suggest you do not copy the
documentation files onto the working copy of Disk 2.
NOTES on specific files by Name and purpose
SubDirectory C:\VITA
VI2-FIG.CNF (Configuration data file)
must be on each disk with an .EXE program
ACTIV.DAT - holds calorie usage for each exercise
must be on disk with VI2-DIN.EXE
Sub-Subdirectory C:\VITA\PRS
All files with extension .PRS (indicates person)
example DEMO.PRS
DIETPRS.PRS - The file with names of all individuals
using the program on this machine
Sub-Subdirectory C:\VITA\FOD
CATTY.DAT - Names of all the food categories
All files with extension .DAT (indicates food category)
example VEGGIES.DAT
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Intent 9
GENERAL INTENT OF VITACAL
This program is designed to be used as a guide to
healthier living. It is only designed as a general
reference and should not replace consultation with
medical personnel nor should it replace careful planning
of activities or dietary planning.
You are trying to control the calories you take in
versus the calories you expend while maintaining a
healthy diet consisting of the required vitamins and
minerals. That is where VITACAL (c) comes in. Rather
than restrict what you eat, it allows you to plan your
lifestyle around healthy activities and healthy foods
that YOU ENJOY.
The program will analyze your basic life-style to
determine your requirements for calorie intake and 14
vitamins and minerals. Daily intake of these items will
be recommended in two formats; 1) Federal RDA
recommendations, and 2) you may also manually substitute
your own requirements for those listed in part two, if
you disagree with the program's determinations.
After the basic requirements have been determined, the
program will track your actions over a (continuing) one
year period. Each day, you must enter your food intake,
activities, and weight into the program. The program
will calculate your intake and your output and store it
in your data file. At your leisure, you may have the
program analyze your actions and show you how you have
been doing. This is available for any specified period
of time, with a specified starting date and ending date.
NOTE: While the input section will 'roll over' the year
(i.e. will allow you to put in data from Dec 87 to Jan
88, etc) the analysis programs are not as versatile. To
analyze this data, you would need to analyze from ' 1 to
31 Dec, then from 1 to 31 Jan separately' to get a valid
picture.
DAILY WEIGHT CHECK
While most diet plans recommend you weigh only once a
week, I require daily weigh-ins. WHY? Very simple.
Diet programs are trying to boost your confidence in the
plan by always showing you as 'losing' weight. The
weight of a normal person, even one involved in a true
starvation diet, will go up or down by 2% on a daily
basis just based on water retention. By limiting you to
one weigh-in per week, they hope to show you the overall
trend towards a lower weight. This program will
graphically show you the entire time period on a day by
day basis and show you the overall trend. (An analysis
of 1 Aug to 30 Sep will show 61 separate points over
that period and allow you to see the overall trend,
including fluctuations.)

INTENDED AUDIENCE
The program is designed to be used in a multitude of
settings: 1) by a single individual tracking his/her own
actions, 2) at a health club, or similar establishment,
where the clientele is allowed to track their activities
on the club computer, or 3) in a medical establishment
tracking the performance of their patients. Password
protection for the personal data files can be invoked to
restrict the access of others, if desired; or not used
if privacy is not an issue. While the protection level
is minimal, it is sufficient to prevent a casual user
from looking at others data without authorization.
The program will run on a machine with a hard disk, or
one with only floppy disk drives. It assumes that each
of the 3 major segments (1. programs, 2. personnel
files, and 3. food data files) is stored on a different
drive and/or in different subdirectories. On a hard
disk system, this may simply be different
sections/paths. On a floppy system, the programs are
stored on one disk, and the personal and food files may
be stored on a separate disk.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Intent 11
PERSONAL DATA SECURITY
The programs are designed to provide a small level of
security for personal data. This is accomplished by
requiring the use of a password in order to access an
individual's file. The decision to use or not use
password control is determined by the system operator
when the program is configured. This may be changed at
any time (without affecting the programs or data) in the
UTILITY segment.
When an individual is introduced to the program, he is
requested to put in his personal password. This is
required for 'Introduction' whether password protection
is implemented or not. There is not an automatic
default password. The password should be something that
can be easily remembered, but uncommon enough to not be
guessed by someone playing with the system. (The SYSOP
can read and change anyone's password through the
UTILITY program.) This password is stored in code in
one of the files. If 'password' is implemented, an
individual will be asked to put in the proper password
whenever they want to access the file. That includes
each time a person changes to a different segment of the
program (such as from analysis to putting in your
activities.)
There is also a master password that the system operator
puts in through the UTILITY program that will allow
access to any file. I highly recommend that it not be
'SECRET', 'PRIVATE', your own name or any similar common
phrases that some unauthorized individual might easily
think of.
WARNING: The password protection allows only minimal
protection. Any reasonably competent hacker can break
the code in a short period.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook 12
GENERAL DISCLAIMERS
MEDICAL ACCURACY
While VITACAL has been written as an aid to healthy
living, it is not a medical diagnostic tool and is not
officially approved by any medical association.
Recommendations and values have been determined from
various books and manuals on food requirements. While I
have attempted to evaluate the various data, its
validity must always be in question.
The RDA recommendations are from data distributed by the
US Dept of Health.
CONSULT A DOCTOR BEFORE MAJOR CHANGES IN LIFESTYLE
The calculations and recommendations are based on an
average person with average eating habits and activity
levels. They are intended only to suggest possible
minor alterations in your habits to improve your health.
Any radical changes in your life style should only be
attempted after consultation with your doctor.
People who are pregnant and people who have any disease
or any health problems should not use this program, as
it is not designed for your special circumstances.
LACK OF PRIVACY OF DATA
While password protection has been designed into the
data files, they are only MINIMUM level protection. Any
semi-competent computer hacker could break into a
program and read the results. It is also possible for
others to accidentally break the code and read the
files.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR'S QUALIFICATIONS
I am not a doctor nor health specialist. I have NO
training in dietary requirements nor any similar field.
I am a 'technocrat' with a BSME and an MSIT.

HOW TO USE VITACAL
The following will be a mini explanation of the various
segments of VITACAL and what they will do for you.
Additionally, it will give a starting point for running
the various program segments.
GENERAL NOTES COMMON TO MOST PROGRAMS
In cases where a one character response will perform the
next option, I have used 'hot keys.' That is, you will
not need to press any key other than the one indicating
your choice. These keys are indicated in GREEN for
users with a color monitor. In other cases, where
responses exist beyond a one-key level, you will need to
press a RETURN or ENTER, depending on your machine, to
indicate your choice is complete.
When setting the date, all input is via the arrow keys.
They will move you from day to month to year, etc and
either increase or decrease the entry, depending on what
you press.
If the program requires data files and you do not have
the current version, it will tell you. In selected
cases, the programs will automatically return to the
central menu.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Tutorial 14
INTRODUCTION
This tutorial is intended to walk you through the first
time you use VITACAL. It will point out the actions you
need to take, in their correct order, each time you use
VITACAL.
I will assume you have installed the program, as
indicated in the manual, on a hard disk (Floppy users
will be told by the program when it can not find a file
and/or program it needs and prompted to swap disks
accordingly.)
NOTE: The symbol <CR> indicates you should press the
RETURN key.
VITACAL 2.3 has the ability to determine if you are
using a 101/102 keyboard. If so, you will be allowed to
select whether you prefer to use the dedicated arrow
keys or the arrows on the numeric keypad. You make the
selection by pressing the F2 function key. The keys
selected are displayed on the central menu of each sub-
program, along with the correct configuration of the NUM
Lock/CAPS Lock keys. If these keys are incorrectly set,
the display will flash the correct configuration.

If you press the letter F, it will show you the files on
the disk drive and/or subdirectory where it expects to
find the file. It will then give you the opportunity to
swap disks and try again (by pressing the <CR> ) or
press any other key to return to the previous level
where you were working.
To allow a quick termination of the program, most input
segments allow you to use a Control C (^C) to stop the
program and return the computer to the 'SYSTEM' level.

Here is where you specify how much of the item you
consumed. The item in question is displayed in line 2.
Lines 3,4 and 5 are the units you are entering and the
standard serving size by Servings, Ounces, or Grams.
The unit of measure you are entering is displayed in
inverse video and your cursor is beside that unit. To
change the unit of measure, press 'S' for servings, 'O'
for ounces, or 'G' for grams. Any numbers you have
entered will be erased and your cursor will move to the
new area. You may also move around using the arrow
keys.
The standard serving size is specified to the right of
the units. Note that the SERVING option is how many of
the servings in the size specified you consumed. In
this example, if you entered 2, it would assume you had
two .5 cup servings. The grams and ounce serving size
is for information only and relates back to the .5 cup.
If you moved to the ounce area and typed in a 2, it
would assume you meant you had consumed 2 ounces of
canned apple juice, NOT 2 times the 4.4 ounce serving.
If you do not specify a quantity, the program assumes
you had 0 amount of it.

There IS a harassment section. If, after 60 days of

When you first introduce a new person to the program (or
if you want to change your data to determine new
requirements <such as a change in age>), it will ask you
to put in your height, weight, age, sex, etc, and then
calculate your requirements. Pressing the F10 indicates
you are finished, and the program will then build a data
file for the individual. If you accidentally press F10
before you are finished, allow the program to build the
data file, then go in and change the requirements. No
harm has been done. The data file does not change in
size once created: space is allocated completely at this
time for the normal data. It takes a while since it is
creating and 'zeroizing' the data storage areas. This
assures there is enough space on the storage medium for
the individuals entire annual database.
You move up and down in the display using the up/down
arrows. The name for the value you are changing is
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Requirements 20
highlighted, as is your location on the line. The size
of the field is denoted by the '|' symbols.
If you want to see the effect of changing your values,
press the F7 key. The calculated requirements are
displayed on the right hand side of the display screen.
The program automatically makes these calculations when
you exit this segment, so this is only an easy way for
you to see what affects different answers may have.
Be sure to set metric or english units first. That
affects how the other values are calculated. The
program has some default limits in it, such as minimum
and maximum heights. If you put in a value not
acceptable to the program, it will revert to the
default. This value is not immediately displayed on the
screen. You can only see it by exiting this segment and
returning to here.
Key 4 - Manual Requirements
MANUAL REQUIREMENTS
If you disagree with any of the requirements for
vitamins and minerals, you may go in and change them on
the manual input display. This will have no effect on
the program, as both the RDA and Manual requirements are
displayed for information only.
This section works like the initial introduction
section. Note the BMR value that says -DO NOT CHANGE-.
This value is crucial to properly determining the rate
at which you burn calories: changing it without KNOWING
what you are doing will drastically impact program
accuracy. The option is included for those who need to
make changes.
Note that I have a recommended FAT intake. This is
calculated as the maximum percentage of calories from
fat recommended by the RDA.
Key 5: Reset Manual Requirements to RDA:
This is a quick way to reset any changes you have made
in your requirements back to the original calculated
values.
Key 6: Save your requirements:
After you have made changes to your RDA or Manual
requirements, a warning will appear on the menu screen
telling you to save the changes. They are NOT
automatically changed. This feature was incorporated to
allow you to see the requirements for different people
without actually having to start a data file for them.
Key 7: Display your requirements:
As it says, this will show you the current requirements.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Add/Modify Food Items 21
ADD FOODS TO THE FILE
Key 2 from VITA - Add foods to the files
ADD/MODIFY FOODS
This is where you can add your favorite foods to a
category, and move foods from one category to another.
(I recommend you put your most commonly eaten foods into
your personal category for ease and speed of access.)
You will be asked to specify the category, then the
food. A display (similar to that for modifying your
requirements) will come up with the various categories
of calories, vitamins, etc, for you to fill in. Leaving
either the ounces or grams value blank will cause the
program to calculate the missing one. Putting both in
will have the grams converted to the ounces equivalent.
You may also build a recipe by putting in the various
ingredients, then specifying a serving size. (It looks
and works very similar to the method used to put in your

Standard procedures for moving around a data field
display in this program. It doesn't check for bad
entries, so be careful. This is in case you find
missing data for one of the foods and want to update the
file. It also allows you to change the name of a food.
Using the Page Up/Page Down keys will allow you to see
the different codes for the serving descriptions.
Key 2 - Add a food
Here is where you add your own foods to the files.
Again, you move around using the arrow keys, put in the
data, and tell it you are finished by pressing F10.
Since most information sheets on food will give you only
ounces or grams, this section will take care of it. Put
in the one you know and it will calculate the other one.
If you put in both, it assumes ounces is correct and
calculates grams. This cross calculation sometimes will
cause the displayed value to differ from what you put in
by a small amount.
If the data is given as a percent RDA, then put it in as
stated (i.e. 5%). The percent sign following the value
tells the program to compute the numerical value.
Putting in an asterick (*) indicates the value is
unknown (and will be calculated as zero.)

Key 3 - Copy a Food
This option allows you to move foods into a different
category where you can find them. It saves trying to
remember where every food is located.
Select the category of food you want to copy from by
putting in the appropriate number.
Select the food you want to copy.
File to copy food to?
This is the file that you want the food copied to. It
will be added as the last item. Note that the ORIGINAL
food is not removed from the first category. You must
remove it using option 4.
Key 4: Remove a food from a category.
Allows you to remove a food from a category, such as
when you have copied it to another category or determine
it is not accurate. Select the food in the normal
manner. The program will move the LAST food in the
category to that spot and delete the selected food.
Key 5: Add a new food category
The first thing you must do to add a category is
determine what you want to call it. Using Page Up/Page
Down, you can see the names already in use. If you
select a duplicate name, the program will tell you and
return you to here.
After you have selected a display name for the new
category, you will need to select a file name. It can
be any combination of alphanumeric characters, but MUST
NOT contain commas, periods, or other punctuation. You
can see names already in use by paging through them.
Duplicate names are NOT permitted.
Key 6: Look at an individual food item (values not
stored)
Select the category and food in the standard manner.
The program will then show you the 'quantity selection'
screen. After you have put in the quantity you are
interested in, the program will show you the calories,
etc, for that quantity.

On a daily basis, you will need to put in what you have
eaten and what you have done (2 separate segments.)
Notice that the name of the individual being changed and
the date for which the data is being entered is
displayed on the screen.
This program segment is the most complicated and time
consuming of the group. It is also the place where you
will spend the most time.
Notice the 'TRACKING EVERYTHING' display. When you
initially enter this segment (or select a new person) it
will come up flashing 'TRACKING TOTALS ONLY'. Tracking
totals is the main way the program is designed to work:
all analysis is based on totals. At the request of some
of my users, I added this new option. It creates a very
simple file that is just a running list of what you have
put in by name, amount, and calorie equivalent. It is
there so you can check whether you actually included the
baked potato you had with dinner last night, or listed
the 5 mile run you did for exercise yesterday. If you
erase the file and press the F3 button, it will start a
new one. You look at this file with your word processor
or equivalent program.
WARNING: this file 'eats' disk space like a bandit.
Check remaining disk space on a regular basis if you use
it (daily, weekly, whatever.)
Your display will look like the following. Notice that
the date and time of entry are included, along with your
'weight' for the day the data was entered.

The program will first ask you the name of the food you
have eaten, then the category number it is in. Spelling
is not important as the name is only a memory jogger
that will be displayed with the foods in the category
once you have put in everything you have eaten. The
program will automatically sort the foods by category
and then ask you to select a food from the category. By
doing this, it reduces the time spent opening and
closing files and reading in data. Select the actual
food closest to what you ate. It will then allow you to
put in the amount in Servings, Ounces, or Grams
(determined by pressing the letters S, O, G
respectively). The actual mode will be highlighted, and

PUT IN YOUR ACTIVITIES
The program will ask you for the activity number from
the display, and then the time in hours and minutes you
performed that activity. Pressing F10 for an activity
tells it you are finished with specific activities, and
it assumes you spent the remainder of the time 'sitting
at ease'. You have a display of the time remaining for
the day and the total calories used as you put in the
data. Note: If you accidentally put in too much time
for an activity, you can change it by putting in the
same activity and a negative (-) time.
The Page Up/Page Down keys shows the potential
activities. There are over 80 of them, listed in
increasing order of caloric requirement. The activities
you have entered so far, along with the hours and
minutes you specified for each and the associated
calories, is shown on the right. Once you have filled
the available screen space, the data 'rolls' back to the
top. To review it all, simply press F7.
Line 5 is where you actually enter data. First, you
will put in the number of the activity. Then it will
ask you for how many hours. The next question is how
many minutes you put in. This is what it will use to
calculate your caloric usage. While it is easier to
understand the displays if you put things in hours and
minutes, that is not critical. You can put in 3.5 hours
and 187 minutes, and it will understand both.
Please note that once you have told it you are
'finished' you may not go back and add activities: you
must start from scratch. This is because I calculate
any unused time as 'Sitting at Ease' to account for all
your caloric usage in a day.
Change your current weight
You should update this every day. For most accurate
results, you should weigh yourself at the same time
every day to account for fluctuations based on activity
level. I weigh myself when I first get up, just after
my shower and start-of-day activities. I feel that is
where I would have the least effect of the previous
day's activities. Needless to say, the best way to
weigh yourself is without clothes. The weight of your
clothes varies, depending on design, and may skew the
results in the short term.

ANALYZE THE RESULTS
You may analyze the results of what you have been
putting in and how well your diet plan is working. You
will have the option of selecting a single day or a
range of days and getting the average of what you have
done and consumed. Please don't put the starting day
after the ending day. Note also that if you did not put
in any data for a given day, that day will be averaged
as a zero (0), distorting the results. A paper copy of
your results is available.
The primary means of seeing what you have done is
available only to systems with graphics capability.
Select the range of days and the values you want to
analyze and the program will draw a graph with each day
marked. (NOTE: It works on a month by month basis.)
Each value (calories, weight, vitamins) will be
displayed on a separate graph.
Option 1 allows you to choose someone else.
Option 2 allows you to specify the start and stop dates
for the analysis. The date range of the current
analysis is displayed on this line. If you decide to
change the dates, this option will call up the 'input
date' screen twice. The first time you specify the date
you want to start the analysis, the second time will be
the last day to be included in the analysis. Both
options 4 and 6 use these dates.
Option 7 alternately selects a high or medium resolution
screen for the display. You will need to change it to
match your system.

This is another of those dangerous segments. If you
specify any of these, it will erase the old pointer
files and replace them with blank files. All your old
data files would still be there, but you would be unable
to get to them. If you went to the program segments
that created those files and ran it with the old name,
it will erase the old file and again leave you with a
blank.
The intention of this series of segments is to allow you
to have different data files on different disks. For
example, if you were working a machine with only floppy
disks and had a lot of people wanting to use the
program, you would not have enough space on the disk.
With this segment, you could create multiple disks, each
handing a different group of people with a personnel
file holding only the names of the people on the disk.
Since the configuration data file is critical to the
running of any of the programs, and could accidentally
be lost or destroyed, I have included a way of creating
a new one. It will put in some default values which you
can change to what you need. By running this segment,
you can create new ones.

Key 3 - Remove a food category
This will allow you to totally erase a food data file
and remove it's name from the list. Use it with care.
It has the primary usefulness of allowing you to reduce
the number of files displayed. If you move to a part of
the world that does not have the 'fast food places'

Also, if you find you have increased the files you use
so much there is not any space left on the disk, you may
want to remove those files you never use.
To remove a file, simply type in the number associated

VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Utilities 38
After you have set the paths telling the program where
your data files are located, use this segment to see if
you did it correctly. Have it display both sets of data
files. If it can't and you have the files properly
positioned in the program, you probably put in an
improper path specification. I did quite often in the
early stages of program development, hence this segment.
2 - Display Food files

Key 7 - Change a person's password or data file.
This is another multi-function choice. The first option
calls up the screen shown below. With this option, you
can change the individuals password, etc.
NOTE: When you change the FILE NAME, you only change it
in the personnel file, you do NOT change the name of the
file. If you want to change both, you must go to the
DOS level and change the name of the data file.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ END SCREEN ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is where you can change things for a forgetful
client. I recommend you do not change the file name, as
it only changes the pointer file, not the data files
name.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Utilities 39
CHANGE DATA on a person.
You can modify the actual data file using this option.
Once you specify the date (see standard screens) it will
display the data for that day, including weight,
calories, vitamins, etc. Use the standard FLIEGWEG data
screen modification to move between fields and make the
desired modifications.
Key 8 - Specify The Default Individual to work
(See common screens on selecting a new person)
This is how you select the default individual. That is
the person it will automatically try to work when you
run a segment.
The names it displays are those from the personnel file.
If no-one has been introduced yet, and the demo file is
not available, you will receive a blank screen and not
be able to specify a default individual. You can come
back and change it any time you like.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Calculations 40
MEDICAL BASIS OF CALCULATIONS
Primary calculations of your requirements are based on the
following data elements:
1) Age
2) Sex
3) Height
4) Weight
5) Build
6) Activity Level
Use Metric System (Y/N)
Proper weight is currently determined by height and sex.
CALORIE REQUIREMENTS AND USAGE
Calorie requirements are based on the Resting Metabolic
Rate (RMR). This is the minimum calorie requirement to
keep an individual alive and at a constant weight if the
individual was constantly asleep: i.e. no outside
activity requiring caloric output.
Calorie output for given activities are based on this
requirement multiplied by a factor related to the given
activity.
RMR
Resting Metabolic Rate =
1kg ideal weight * 1 kcal/hour * sex factor
average man = 70kg 154 lb Sex Factor 1.05
average woman = 58kg 128 lb Sex Factor 0.97
Recommended calories per day (CALREC)
RMR * kg of ideal weight *24 hour * activity factor
activity factor
1 sleeping (Basic Minimum)
1.5 sedentary
1.6 light
1.7 moderate
2 strenuous
BMR = CALREC/(24*60)
basal (resting) cals per minute = calrec/minutes in day

VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Warnings A - 41
APPENDIX A: SPECIAL NOTES & WARNINGS
The file VI2-FIG.CNF must be located on the same disk
and directory as the .EXE file you are trying to run.
Where you must use several disks, as is the case with a
twin floppy drive system, VI2-FIG.CNF must be on each
disk. When you change configuration, be sure to copy a
current version to each operating disk.
GRAPHICS
People without graphics capability will crash program if
they try to draw a graph. All other segments work
without the use of graphic adapters.
FOOD DATA FILES
Do not start a food with a blank or a number.
PATHS
Subdirectories, etc, must have been made previous to
entering the program.
When you change a path:
none of the files are copied to the new path
You must copy or create any files you want there
The program is designed to be located in three
subdirectories. One could be used, but it becomes
cluttered and confusing, plus requiring a large data
space. As created, it will work on a two floppy drive
system: one holding the program section and one holding
the two data file sections.
When you are checking the calorie input of a food,
Five things are shown, three are changeable
1. The number of units in a serving (fixed)
2. Estimated physical size of a serving (fixed)
3 - 5 Servings, Ounces, Grams
The displayed values are the number in a standard
serving. The highlighted one shows what units you are
entering in. Move by pressing the appropriate letter or
arrow, then put in the number of units and press <CR>.
Paging of displayed foods, etc takes place when the Page
Up/Page Down message is shown. Pressing the appropriate
function key will caused paging or abort the entry
In most, but not all, cases, pressing the escape key
will return you to the previous level/entry point
Also, in most cases, ^C (Control C) will terminate the
program

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS
1. Invalid file. This can occur in many areas but is
normally caused by the following.
a) Data files and Programs are different versions.
b) Path has not been properly set from the configuration
program.
c) The proper disks are not installed to match the paths.

|
|__ Major Program Changes
Minor Typos
This will change as I find minor errors and typos in the
programs. It will have no affect on the running of the
program.
Changes in Displays and Segments
This will indicate I have made modifications to displays
and entry formats, and possibly included additional
program segments. All data files and program segments
will remain compatible.
Major Program Changes
As the name indicates, these are major changes. They
will not be compatible with previous versions. This may
include expanding the vitamins being calculated, etc.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Registration C - 44
APPENDIX C: REGISTRATION
Send your $48.95 check or money order to the author:
(current Jan 1991) (permanent)
Rommie G Brewer Rommie G Brewer
15303 Ameswood or Rt 4 Box 912
San Antonio, TeXas 78232 Sheridan, ARkansas 72150
Please note: My job in DoD requires frequent moves. As
such, the above listed address in Arkansas is one that
will forward mail to me if I am not at the Texas
address.
Any questions, problems, or other correspondence should
be sent to the above address. If you have not received
a reply in two months, please send again. Mail
addressed to the above address has been known to be lost
on rare occassions.
Registering (and paying) for the program will authorize
you to get the next version for half price. (Please
specify this when registering a follow-on version.) It
will also result in your recieving a disk that does NOT
have the HARASSMENT counter activated. The HARASSMENT
counter is a screen that appears after you have used the
program 60 days without registration. It will not
damage anything nor restrict any action: it only gives
you a chance to ponder the advantages of a registered
copy.
Registration will also provide the author with the
incentive to work on improving and expanding the
program.
If your current circumstances prevent you from being
able pay the registration fee (for example: parts of DoD
are not authorized to purchase shareware programs) write
the author spelling out the circumstances involved and
we can attempt to find a solution.
Registration is considered to be for use on a SINGLE
computer. If you register the program and wish to use a
copy for your own PERSONAL use on your office machine,
that is also allowed.
Multi-user and Site licenses are available.
VITACAL 2.3 Handbook Distribution D - 45
VITACAL 2.3 is a ShareWare product. As such, its primary
distribution is by computer bulletin board systems
(BBS'). Distribution is authorized to/by BBS systems,
software distribution systems, commercial distributors of
software products, clubs, individuals, etc. In short,
there is no restriction on who may distribute the
programs. However,
YOU MAY NOT ALTER THE CODE IN ANY WAY, AND YOU MAY NOT
SELL IT FOR ANY PRICE. You may charge a reasonable copy
fee and reasonable distribution costs.
Pay BBS Boards.
The programs may be freely posted for download, IN THEIR
ENTIRETY and unaltered. I would appreciate a free one
year membership on your board (NOT to include any
special services for which for which each use generates
a fee) if downloads exceed 10 in any given year. THIS
IS NOT A REQUIREMENT. Its primary purpose would be to
allow me to provide support (as available) in areas
where a high interest has been indicated.
Distribution Centers
Request you provide me a copy of any catalogs or
advertisements listing VITACAL. This is not a
requirement, but would aid in determining areas of high
interest in this product.

[ H O W T O G E T S U P P O R T A N D H E L P ]
If you have any suggestions as to how VITACAL and its
auxiliary programs can be made more useful to you,
please write me. If I see the same suggestion from
several sources I will try to include that improvement
in an up-date. Also if some part of this manual is
incomprehensible after several readings please let me
know so I can rewrite it.
Please send as much information as you can about your
system and any problem you may be having. Be sure to
tell me which version(s) of my program(s) you have. If
none of the current versions of my programs will resolve
your problem I will refund the money you sent me when
you registered it. If you wish to speak on the
telephone send me a number where you can be called
collect at night. Tell me what days and what times I
should try to call.
