- By the end of October, he said he saw money coming in no later than
- mid-November, and at the end of November he promised that the first
- pay period would be no later than December 15. LaVerne and I agreed
- that if I could see no results from my efforts working with Jack I
- would cut off our working relationship by December 25.
-
- I was feeling the need to have a back-up plan before then, and
- started applying myself to finding a job. Jack finally did give me
- a paycheck - $450. It bounced and caused a domino effect in my
- checking account, which had never seen a service fee for an NSF
- check before. The fees accumulated to over $150.
-
- Jack became more difficult to contact, not coming to the phone, cut
- our conversations short and not returning calls. He kept promising
- me he would call back by a certain time, and I would wait, but the
- calls never came.
-
- My frustration found an outlet in humor, as I composed this ditty
- and left it with his answering service as a message for Jack:
-
- "Stay by the phone,"
- Said my friend Jack,
- "I'll call you by six,
- and that is a fact."
-
- Sat I by the phone
- From dusk until dawn;
- Sit I still here,
- With a sigh and a yawn.
