Installing dBASE IV on LANtastic
Installing dBASE IV is fairly straighforward, and in general one
should be able to successfully install it following the directions in
the dBASE manual for installation on the IBM PC LAN. The following
points address issues not covered in the dBASE manual.
1. You cannot have SHARE.EXE running while you are installing dBASE.
2. Before installing, you need to add the REDIR and SERVER commands to
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The installation process apparently checks
in this file to make sure that these commands are there and will
not install if it does not find them. You may remove them after
dBASE is installed if you wish to have a separate LAN startup batch
file.
3. There is one exception to the installation directions:
The installation process creates 2 directories off of the root
directory, one which holds all of the dBASE programs and the other
which stores the data on the defined users. The instructions say
to create a shared resource which points directly to the \DBASE
directory (which stores the programs), this is incorrect. You
should create, in the NET_MGR program under network access
information, a disk device which has its link path set to be the
drive letter on which you installed dBASE.
