The concept of FileDisk requires some familiarity of the user
with the operating system. You may wish to consult an experienced
MS-DOS user before installing FileDisk. However, the operation is
designed to be as foolproof as possible. If more than one user
has access to the PC in question, let the system administrator do
this job.
1. Copy FileDisk.Sys and FileForm.Com to your hard disk.
2. Add line "DEVICE = [Drive:Path\]FileDisk.Sys" to CONFIG.SYS.
3. Run CHKDSK on your hard disk(s). If necessary, fix any errors
with CHKDSK /F.
4. Backup your hard disk(s). You should do this frequently
anyway, so this is a good occasion.
5. Read FileDisk.Doc and ReadMe.Doc.
6. Run FileForm C (or whatever letter your hard disk needs).
7. If you were unable to create a FileDisk, run a disk optimizer
or format your hard disk and restore it with the fresh backup
you made in 4 . Go back to 6 . We recommend to make a second
backup before actually formatting a hard disk. RESTORE is
somewhat finicky about floppy disks...
8. If you created a FileDisk, run CHKDSK. The amount of disk
space used by hidden files will be increased by the size of
the FileDisk.
9. Reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del. You will see the Logo of FileDisk
and the size of all FileDisks in kilobytes. The first digit
of the serial number specifies the host disk (0 for the first
hard disk, 1 for the second).
10. Run CHKDSK on the new FileDisk. If your hard disk is C: and
you have no RAM-Disk, the FileDisk will be D:. The order of
installable drives depends on the order in which they are
defined in CONFIG.SYS.
11. Create some test directories on the FileDisk and copy some
files onto it. Erase some of the files, run CHKDSK again
etc., just simulate some working on it until you are sure
that it works all right.
12. Clean up the FileDisk ( or erase and reinstall it with
FileForm) and design it to your needs.
It is essential not to move the FileDisks around. Since they are
hidden and write protected, only programs like disk optimizers
will do this. Be sure to reboot after you ran such a program and
run FileForm to make sure that the FileDisks are still stored in
continuous runs of clusters.
