NODE-TM program.
A N D
Thank _YOU_ for using this NODE-TM and probably
supporting me by registering your copy of NODE-TM.
---------------------------------------------
FILES INCLUDED :
There should be 5 (five) files included in the distribution archive
which is as follow:
NODE-TM.EXE - The NODE-TM main program
NODE-TM.DOC - The document of NODE-TM (the one that you're reading now)
REGISTER.FRM - Registration form of NODE-TM
TMFON.TXT - Example file of TM.FON file (Telemate phone directory file)
TOLLFREE.NTM - Example file of TOLLFREE.NTM (TollFree Calling file)
We are using the VALIDATE 0.3 program from McAfee Association with the
checksum of NODE-TM.EXE as follow:
File Name: NODE-TM.EXE
Size: 22,086
Date: 9-14-1990
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - D129
Check Method 2 - 1AF9
---------------------------------------------
DESCRIPTION :
Changes the IFNA Nodelist to a Telemate v2.11 phone directory file,
with extra functions to strip out toll call phone numbers and keeping
the old data from the old Telemate phone directory file.

---------------------------------------------
WHAT'S NEW :
This would be probably what you want to know if you're currently using
NODE-TM, right ?
o Full color screen support. NODE-TM is now using full screen
window like editing menus and it is much colorful than the
previous version. (If you have a color monitor B-) )
o No more assuming. All data and controls in TM.FON are now
configurable.
o Able to accept Configuration file. You can now run NODE-TM
in unattended mode. Especially for sysop in their daily
mid-night batch file.
o Restore the last call date and total call for _EACH_ bbs.
In previous version, NODE-TM will clear the last call date
and total call on each bbs, but now you can keep your record
clean and tidy.
o Exit errorlevel added. If there are any problem occur during
the operation of NODE-TM, while it exit back to DOS, it will
also give an errorlevel, much easy to handle in batch file.
o If your old Telemate phone directory contains some self-entered
BBSes, which is most probably doesn't exist in the IFNA Nodelist,
NODE-TM will now move them to the new TM.FON file. So, you can
keep some private BBSes number in your TM.FON now.
o Support Hercules to VGA Color display
---------------------------------------------
SYSTEM REQUIREMENT:
o IBM compatible computer
o At least 256K system RAM
o A copy of IFNA Nodelist
o Hard Drive is suggested. I have not tested it on a floppy drive.
---------------------------------------------
GETTING START :
This program was written to support Telemate v2.11 which I am using now.
For other versions, I am not sure if the phone directory data is the
same or not. If you are using Telemate with a version number below or
higher than v2.11, you can do 4 things with this NODE-TM program:
1. Find an updated version of Telemate from your favourite BBS or buy
a registered copy from the author of Telemate.
2. Use this program at your _OWN_ risk. Remember, I make no guaran-
tee that this program will work on any other version of Telemate.
3. Find the suitable NODE-TM to suit your version of Telemate.
Unfortunately, the newest version of Telemate I got here is v2.11
and all I can do is supporting this v2.11 version.
4. Forget about this NODE-TM program: you'll have to type the phone
directory by yourself. Too bad, I am sorry about that.
You must place NODE-TM in your Telemate sub-directory in order for it to
locate the files it needs, create its files in the correct place, and also
to make it work properly.
If you had some `Self-Entered' BBSes entry in your TM.FON (Telemate Phone
Directory file), you need to place them at the end of the TM.FON with a
blank entry line in order to seperate the one that you'd enter from the
BBSes that was included in the Nodelist. For further `Self-Entered' BBSes
entry problem, please refer to the file TMFON.TXT.
For your own safety, make a backup of your TM.FON and TM.MEM first before
starting up this program. NODE-TM will overwrite your old TM.FON and TM.MEM
files !
Although NODE-TM will create the phone directory, you may also want to edit
it to suit your needs. For example, the password of each board and Logon
script for each board, etc...
---------------------------------------------
BRIEF ON THE USAGE OF NODE-TM:
If you have a Hercules, Black and White or any monitor that NODE-TM
doesn't has its color display correctly, try to call up NODE-TM with
an option : NC - means no color, like this :
C>NODE-TM NC
If you had used Telemate v2.11 already, you will be familiar with the
configuration manual. Almost 80% of the configuration part is the same
as Telemate v2.11 except it will ask you for the directory where you
put your IFNA Nodelist, your country code and the internaional dialing
prefix of your country.
In case you're lost or you need help, press F1 to get a small help
screen and press F1 to hide it back.
After you had finished the configuration, it will re-display the
data/information that you have selected and ask whether you want to
proceed or not. Select OK to continue, EDIT to re-edit or QUIT to quit
NODE-TM program.
It is almost automatic on processing the new Telemate phone directory
and you need not to worry about what the out come will be.
CONFIGURATION :
Once you had finished the configuration, NODE-TM will create a file -
NODE-TM.CFG, which is the configuration file so it let you able to run
NODE-TM in unattended mode.
This function is available for registered user only, if yours isn't a
registered copy, it will ask you to go through the configuration menu
every time you start NODE-TM.
Sorry, convenience is alway provided to user who support us.
TOLL FREE OPTION:
During NODE-TM's processes, you may find that there is a Toll Free Call
Option on the top of the window : this is the function that will strip
out toll call phone numbers to ensure that the phone numbers contained
in the Telemate phone directory are 100% toll free.
In order to turn this option on, you need to do 2 things.
1. Create a plain text file named TOLLFREE.NTM using any straight text
file editor and put it in your Telemate sub-directory together with
NODE-TM
The content of this TOLLFREE.NTM file is the phone exchanges that
are _TOLL FREE_ to your district.
Example 1 : I am living in Vancouver B.C., and the nearby suburb
of Mission is a TOLL CALL from here. Its phone
number is 820-0000, so I _WON'T_ enter 820 into the
list.
Example 2 : Port Coquitlam is TOLL FREE from here, and there is
a phone number 464-0000, so I WILL enter the phone
prefix 464 into this file.
An example TOLLFREE.NTM is included in this archive so that you can
see how it's done.
( To remember easily, the .NTM file extension stands for (N)ode-(T)(M). )
2. The other thing you need to do is register your copy in order to make
this function workable. Even though you have created the file, if
yours isn't a registered copy, this function won't work and if you
had created a TOLLFREE.NTM in the same directory where NODE-TM is
placed, NODE-TM will attempt to reset the TOLLFREE.NTM, which is by
mean of erasing it.
For registration, please refer to the section HOW TO REGISTER YOUR
COPY below.
If your country doesn't have Toll Call phone prefixes, you would not need
to set up this file, athough you can make a blank file. B-)
After NODE-TM has finished its work, you will notice how many Bulletin Board
Systems are available to you around town, and how many boards have been
stripped.
EXIT ERRORLEVELS:
For easy error handling, I had included errorlevels when NODE-TM exit.
Errorlevel 3 : Can't Locate <nodelist>
2 : Nodelist doesn't have a HOST number
1 : Nodelist too large, Telemate can only accept 1000 BBSes
0 : No errors, new TM.FON and TM.MEM processed.
where <nodelist> is the FileSpec for the IFNA Nodelist file.
ERROR and ANSWER:
If you occur error(s) during NODE-TM process, the following may be helpful :
Error : Nodelist too large, Telemate can only accept 1000 BBSes.
Answer : You have probably told NODE-TM to process a Full Nodelist. Heh,
don't you know that Telemate can only handle up to 1000 phone
entries ? No problem. I got some solution for that.
Either you use some other program to optimize the nodelist,
for example, extract out the Net which you are in and are local
to you, OR using the Toll Free function provided by NODE-TM.
If you have a lots of self-entered BBSes in your Telemate
phone directory, you may also want to delete some of them which
you probably won't call, so as to give more limit to the entries
from the Nodelist.
Error : Nodelist doesn't have a HOST number.
Answer : Your Nodelist doesn't have HOST number, thus it makes NODE-TM
unable to complete the Nodelist analyzing process. You better
check your Nodelist and see why there isn't a HOST node present
or you try to get a updated Nodelist from somewhere.
Error : Can't locate <nodelist>
Answer : You had told NODE-TM to process a Nodelist that doesn't exist
in the drive/path that you had stated in the configuration
file or during your configuration. To solve this problem,
either you load up a text editor program to change the
NODE-TM.CFG file (if you know what is stated in the file) OR
you first erase the NODE-TM.CFG file and run NODE-TM again to
go through the configuration menu again. Most probably you had
told NODE-TM to process a Nodelist on the first time and then
you had erased that Nodelist. If you want to run NODE-TM in
unattended mode, I suggest you to rename the new Nodelist that
come out every week to a standard file name, say NODELIST.NEW
and tell NODE-TM to look for the NODELIST.NEW every time.
---------------------------------------------
EFFICIENCY:
In order to get the shortest and fastest running time of NODE-TM, you
should consider the following :
- The larger old TM.FON and TM.MEM you have, the longer it
takes to compile.
- The larger IFNA Nodelist is, the longer it takes to compile.
- The larger TOLLFREE.NTM file is, the longer it takes to compile.
- Have the configuration setted perfectly.
- The slower Hard Disk you have, the longer it takes to compile.
As a conclusion to above, if you want to process the Nodelist as fast
as it could using NODE-TM, you need to :
i) Optimize your old Telemate phone directory. Delete those Self-Entered
BBSes that you probably won't call them in the rest of your life.
ii) Use a Nodelist extractor program to extract out the local Net from
the IFNA Nodelist first before running NODE-TM.
iii) Register your copy and use the Toll Free option and have the
configuration file ready.
iv) Buy a faster Hard Drive... B-)
---------------------------------------------
BUG REPORTS:
If you encounter a situation where NODE-TM fails to perform the correct
phone directory listing or gives you a wierd result that you aren't
expecting, please compress the Nodelist which you are using and all NODE-TM
related files using LHARC, PKZIP, ZOO, ARC (any flavor) or PAK and sent
it to me along with a complete description of your system including your
equipment list and the names of ALL memory resident programs in use at the
time of failure, and as complete an account of the failure as you can provide.
I can be reached via Netmail to Daniel Pun at 1:153/743.0 Boogie Woogie.
---------------------------------------------
HOW TO REGISTER YOUR COPY
