  20.      First of all MILNET is a system used by branches of the military for
  21. unclassified communications.  MILNET produces that infamous TAC login xxx.  TAC
  22. MILNET is run out of the University of Southern California.  USC is the ISI
  23. master dial up.  I would also like to point out that the Department of Defense
  24. tends to frown on people browsing through there system.  With that in mind,
  25. here is a basic overview of MILNET operations.

  27.         : :Logging On: :
  28.  
  29.     MILNET can be reached over through the "nets" or can be directly connected
  30. to by dialing 1-800-368-2217 or 213-306-1366.  The later is the ISI master dial
  31. up.  Most military bases connect through the 800 dial up owned by AT&T.

  33. ISIE MASTER LOGON PROCEDURE
  34. ----------------------------
  35. 1> call 213-306-1366
  36. 2> when the phone stops ringing you are connected
  37. 3> enter location number (9 digits) + 1 or 0
  38. 4> hang up and it will call you
  39. 5> pick up the phone and hit the '*' on your phone
  40. 6> hit a carriage return on the computer
  41. 7> at the 'what class?' prompt hit RETURN
  42. 8> then a 'go' prompt will appear and log on as you would the 800 number.

  44. MILNET LOGIN PROCEDURE

  46. > When you first connect you will see:

  64. > Next you will see a 'USER-ID' prompt. The first 4 characters vary but it is
  65. is always followed by a '-' and what ever connection you choose.

  69. > The first three letters are the initials of the user followed by a random
  70. number (1-9).

  74. > An access code will never contain a ( 1, 0, G, Z).

  78. THE USERNAME EXPLANATION:
  79. -------------------------
  80.      The first 3 letters in the example given above are SAC. This stands for
  81. Strategic Air Command, a branch of the Air Force.  Following that is a "."
  82. Then the unit number and the prime mission.  In this case 512AREFW", (512th
  83. AIR REFUELING WING).  Then a '-' and the Individual Squadron name 'LGTO'
  84. (LOGISTICS GROUND TRANSPORTATION OPERATIONS), a fancy name for the motor pool.
  85.      The password will not be echoed back and should be entered after the
  86. username.  The new user password as a default is: NEW-UZER-ACNT.

  90. PROGRAMS AVAILABLE TO SAC USERS:

  99. CHAT    Provides near real time communication between terminal users on the

  105. DCOPY   Handles output on DIABLO and XEROX printers

  107. EMACS   Powerful full-screen text editor
  108. FOLLOW  Suspense follow up program

  110. FTP     provides file transfer capabilities between host computers
  111.  
  112. FKEYS   allows user to define function key (real spiffaruni)

  114. HELP    the command used by stupid generals or hackers that have never used
  115.         milnet before

  117. HERMES  E-Mail

  119. NCPCALC spreadsheet program
  120.  
  121. PHOTO   saves transcripts of sessions
  122.  
  123. REMIND  sends user-created reminders
  124.  
  125. RIPSORT a sophisticated data sorting program
  126.         (Described in SAC's User manual (sorry))

  128. SCRIBE  a powerful text formatter for preparing documents.

  131. SPELL   text file spelling checker.

  134. SUSCON  allows the creating, sending, and clearing of suspenses.

  137. TACOPY  used for printing hard copies of files

  140. TALK    pretty much the same as chat.
