  16. What is FEDIX?
  17.  
  18. FEDIX is an on-line information service that links the higher education
  19. community and the federal government to facilitate research, education, and
  20. services.  The system provides accurate and timely federal agency information
  21. to colleges, universities, and other research organizations.
  22.  
  23. There are NO REGISTRATION FEES and NO ACCESS CHARGES for using FEDIX.  The
  24. only cost is for the phone call.
  25.  
  26. FEDIX provides daily information updates on:
  27.  
  28.   - Federal EDUCATION and RESEARCH PROGRAMS (including descriptions,
  29.     eligibility, funding, deadlines).
  30.   - SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, and GRANTS
  31.   - Available used government RESEARCH EQUIPMENT
  32.   - New funding for specific research and education activities from
  33.     the COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY, FEDERAL REGISTER, and other sources.
  34.   - MINORITY ASSISTANCE research and education programs
  35.   - NEWS & CURRENT EVENTS within participating agencies
  36.   - GENERAL INFORMATION such as agency history, budget, organizational
  37.     structure, mission statement, etc.

  40. PARTICIPATING AGENCIES

  42. Currently FEDIX provides information on 7 federal agencies broken down into 2
  43. general categories:

  45. 1. Comprehensive Education and Research Related Agency Information
  46. - The Department of Energy (DOE)
  47. - Office of Naval Research (ONR)
  48. - National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
  49. - Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  50.  
  51. 2. Minority Assistance Information
  52. - National Science Foundation (NSF)
  53. - Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
  54. - Department of Commerce (DOC)
  55.  
  56. Additional government agencies are expected to join FEDIX in the future.

  59. REQUIRED HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
  60.  
  61. Any microcomputer with communications software (or a dumb terminal) and a modem
  62. operating at 1200 or 2400 baud can access the system.

  65. HOURS OF OPERATION
  66.  
  67. The system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The only exceptions are for
  68. periodic system updating or maintenance.

  80. SYSTEM FEATURES
  81.  
  82. Although FEDIX provides a broad range of features for searching, scanning, and
  83. downloading, the system is easy to use.  The following features will permit
  84. quick and easy access to agency databases:
  85.  
  86. Menus
  87. -- Information in the system is organized under a series of branching menus.
  88. By selecting appropriate menu options (using either the OPTION NUMBER or the
  89. two-character MENU CODE), you may begin at the FEDIX Main Menu and work your
  90. way through various intermediate menus to a desired sub-menu.  However, if you
  91. already know the menu code of a desired menu, you may bypass the intermediate
  92. menus and proceed directly to that menu by typing the menu code at the prompt.

  94. Help screens are available for key menus and can be viewed by typing '?'
  95. at the prompt.

  97. Capturing Data
  98. -- If you are using a microcomputer with communicaions software, it is likely
  99. that your system is capable of storing or "capturing" information as it comes
  100. across your screen.  If you "turn capture on", you will be able to view
  101. information from the databases and store it in a file on your system to be
  102. printed later.  This may be desirable at times when downloading is not
  103. appropriate.  Refer to your communications software documentation for
  104. instructions on how to activate the capture feature.

  106. Downloading
  107. -- Throughout the system, options are available which allow you to search,
  108. list, and/or download files containing information on specific topics.  The
  109. download feature can be used to deliver text files (ASCII) or compressed,
  110. self-extracting ASCII files to your system very quickly for later use at your
  111. convenience.  Text files in ASCII format, tagged with a ".MAC" extension, are
  112. downloadable by Macintosh users.  Compressed ASCII files, tagged with an ".EXE"
  113. extension, may be downloaded by users of IBM compatible computers.  However,
  114. your system must be capable of file transfers.  (See the documentation on your
  115. communication software).

  117. Mail
  118. -- An electronic bulletin board feature allows you to send and receive messages
  119. to and from the SYSTEM OPERATOR ONLY.  This feature will NOT send messages
  120. between users.  It can be used to inquire about operating the system, receive
  121. helpful suggestions from the systems operator, etc.

  123. Utility Menu
  124. -- The Utility Menu, selected from the FEDIX Main Menu, enables you to modify
  125. user information, prioritize agencies for viewing, search and download agency
  126. information, set a default calling menu, and set the file transfer protocol for
  127. downloading files.
