  5.                     the rose and the bloodgarden

  8.     i often think of myself as a rose, especially
  9.     when my inner companions sing their sweet hell
  10.     music softly within the white tissues of my
  11.     mind. a rose is pure perfection mottled by
  12.     wicked thorns that jab the tender places. this
  13.     is what i do. this is who i am.
  14.

  17.     i hurt the ones i love. i have two halves. one
  18.     is loving, passionate, generous. she is known
  19.     by her own name, and those who love her are
  20.     fools. the other side is heartless and cruel.
  21.     she has no name, but she is in control. bloody
  22.     words escape from the cage in her mind, and
  23.     they cut others without mercy.

  27.     i know others like me. i smile tenderly at
  28.     them when they describe their inner agony.
  29.     i offer words of comfort, though the advice
  30.     i give is hollow. once i received the same
  31.     advice. ( it will pass, things get better,
  32.     life is too wonderful to pass up. ) i hated
  33.     the givers. theirs were lives of beauty and
  34.     normality. no demons spoke to them of their
  35.     dreams. no images of violence and hatred
  36.     disturbed their thoughts. only sweet solace.
  37.     i wanted to kill them for it.

  41.     i used to find meaning in the words of the
  42.     great poets. one could say that i am a
  43.     successful young woman carving her place in
  44.     a man's world. those who know me are amazed
  45.     that i am alive. neither understands me.
  46.     it is just as well. insanity cannot be
  47.     understood by the sane. tell me, would you
  48.     dance with the devil if your own choosing?

  52.     i live in a bloodgarden, where i can
  53.     appreciate the beauty of the rose, but i
  54.     cannot keep myself from pricking my skin
  55.     on the thorns. for i find more joy in the
  56.     pain than in the purity. perhaps you are
  57.     reading these words and cannot understand
  58.     them. be grateful if this is so. i would be.
