  11. NOTES ON A CONVERSATION WITH BOB KAHN ON THE ICCC

  13. I called Bob Kahn and had a good chat with him about some aspects
  14. of the ICCC meeting demonstration.  The points discussed and his
  15. answers were the following.

  17. What is the physical environment going to be like?
  18.  
  19.    Bob has arranged for the Georgetown Ballroom of the Hilton
  20.    Hotel; it has 3000 square feet probably about 75x40 (exact
  21.    dimensions are not known to Bob at this time).
  22.  
  23.    A carpeted false floor is to be installed and there will be
  24.    a partition for an area to show a movie on resource sharing
  25.    which will run more or less continuously.
  26.  
  27.    There will not be booths in the normal sense but details
  28.    are not yet worked out.  Bob expects to have tables
  29.    arranged around the room holding 1 or 2 terminals and low 4
  30.    ft. partitions to break up the space.

  32. Who will man the booths?
  33.  
  34.    Bob presently expects many terminals to be unmanned,
  35.    although manufcturers could have a sales rep.
  36.  
  37.    There will probably be people from net sites at some of
  38.    them from time to time to demonstrate their programs.
  39.  
  40.    We discussed the need for lots of experts from the network
  41.    around who can answer questions and help people.  Bob is in
  42.    favor of such a thing but has not had time yet to pull such
  43.    a group together and there is some uncertainty if enough
  44.    people will volunteer, his initial approach to people
  45.    yielded lots of people interested but with other things to
  46.    do.

  48. When will the equipment be on the floor and available to try
  49. there?

  63. The conference is tues-thurs oct 24-26 and at the moment
  64. the room is only going to be available from the 22nd.  This
  65. seems to be a short time to install floor, TIP, terminals,
  66. phone lines, etc and Bob is going to try to get the room
  67. the previous Wed or Fri, but doesn't know yet.
  68.  
  69. Bob would like to have working demo with terminals,
  70. resources at BBN in Aug.
  71.  
  72. What resources are presently committed?
  73.  
  74.    UCLA Klinerock will have some network measurement stuff to
  75.    demonstrate.
  76.  
  77.    Stanford AI has indicated they will have some programs to
  78.    demone.
  79.  
  80.    Utah Tony Hearn will have his Reduce program to demo, Berry
  81.    Wessler plans to demo something, Harvey Greenfield has some
  82.    sort of mdical program.
  83.  
  84.    RAND before recent sakeup indicated iterest, status now not
  85.    known.
  86.  
  87.    SDC will have some natural language programs and their
  88.    data management systems.
  89.  
  90.    MIT Vezza and Kahn are looking into having some hardcopy
  91.    device such as Photon attached to a GE TS system.  Al has
  92.    some other things to demo.

  94.    Bob has contacted a number of non net sources such as the
  95.    NY Times (data base), Eastern Airlines etc., but has no
  96.    definite commitments yet.

  98.    We at ARC will of course have a number of things to
  99.    demonstrate.

  101. This ARPANET demo is the only show at the conference.  Larry
  102. Roberts has invited the ASIS people over for Thurs afternoon.

  116. The TIP has at this time never been tested with 64 terminals,
  117. but they are going to be putting as many terminal on as
  118. possible during July and testing the terminal to be supplied
  119. ford the conference.

  121. Starting about AUg 1 he expects to start testing to see what
  122. terminals work with what resources and what glitches exist.
  123.  
  124. I asked Bob if we could have enough space for a ARC NIC booth
  125. with an IMLAC TI and room for people to watch our demo's.  Bob
  126. saw no problem there; IMLAC has committed 2 terminals and we
  127. can have one.  TI has not indicated they plan to loan terminal
  128. for the show.  Hiram French is the man from IMLAC who is
  129. supposed to call us.  If there are more than 64 terminal or
  130. the TIP can't support all, then they will have to schedule
  131. terminal connections to the TIP.

  133. Bob is not sure who will be at the conference, its theme is
  134. networks and their impact on soceity, implications for
  135. regulation etc. so ther should be a broad spectrum of people;
  136. will send me a program.

  138. We talked about what kind of documentation help, signs etc
  139. will be around to help people connect and use resources and
  140. generally understand wha the deomo is allabout.
  141.  
  142.    Bob's present picture is some large 2x3 signs in the lobby
  143.    outside the main lecture room directing people to the demo
  144.    and then some signs inside explaining what's happening, a
  145.    card with some TIP commands,resources, a brochure with
  146.    actual scenerios of resource usage, the movie and some
  147.    people as the main on the floor sources of help.

  149.    We talked about the need to coordinate all this with NIC
  150.    documentation and our desire to help design all this.  Bob
  151.    and I are tentatively planning to get together the weekend
  152.    of July 7 here to plan this.  We need to have
  153.    thoughtcthrough ahead of time what we think should be done.

  155. ARPA except for Bob does not seem to have set up any budget for
  156. this show except what their contractors are essentially willing
  157. to give as part of their ongoing research, therefore he has a
  158. very difficult job of pulling off such a large show without more
  159. help than he seems to have gotten so far (these are my
  160. conclusions not satements of his).
