  15.               ESTABLISHING A LOCAL GUIDE FOR NETWORK USAGE

  18.      Actual experiences and experimentation with network systems and
  19. subsystems will be an important supplement to existing NIC
  20. documentation.  For this reason, MITRE, to facilitate local user
  21. access to network resources, is planning to establish a local GUIDE TO
  22. NETWORK USAGE to supplement the Resources Notebook and other NIC
  23. documentation.  The Guide will be tailored to the needs of MITRE users
  24. and will contain information on network systems and subsystems.  (We
  25. cannot precisely define systems and subsystems at this time but as an
  26. example of what we have in mind, TENNEX at SRI is a system and NLS is
  27. a subsystem.)

  29.      The Guide will be implemented under NLS in much the same fashion
  30. as the NIC LOCATOR SYSTEM.  Information gathered that is appropriate
  31. for the NIC but not yet included will be submitted for inclusion in
  32. the NIC.

  34.      Attached is an outline of the proposed NLS files for the Guide
  35. System.  The information included in the Guide will be sufficiently
  36. detailed to enable local users who are unfamiliar with the network,
  37. its terminology, and stores of reference material to utilize resources
  38. at foreign hosts via the network.
  39.  
  40.      Sites will be included in the Guide as local users gain
  41. experience with systems and subsystems located at the remote sites.
  42. Therefore, the sites most likely to be in the Guide will be those that
  43. can be used to support MITRE projects.
  44.  
  45.      We are planning to coordinate our efforts in this undertaking
  46. with a similar effort at the National Bureau of Standards.  We believe
  47. that such endeavors will result in valuable contributions to the NIC,

  60. particularly to the Network Resources Notebook.  Although the Guide
  61. will be tailored for MITRE users, it will contain information of

  63. them through NLS.

  65.      The Guide should become operational during December 1971.  Any
  66. comments on proposed contents of the Guide are welcome.  Anyone
  67. wishing to cooperate in this effort should contact E. Forman at MITRE.

  116.      An NLS "Site File" will be built for each site at which a
  117. resource is presently available to network users at MITRE.  Initial
  118. files will be for those sites that offer resources that are of
  119. specific interest to the local community.  A RESOURCE LOCATOR FILE
  120. will contain a table of contents of the SITE FILES and a list of the
  121. subsystems surveyed for each of these sites.  The headings in the
  122. table of contents will contain links to the corresponding online site
  123. file documents.
