  13.                       NWG Meeting On Network Usage

  16.      M.I.T.'s Project MAC has agreed to host the next Network Working
  17. Group Meeting in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Due to several scheduling
  18. conflicts, the meeting dates indicated in RFC #207 have been moved
  19. ahead two weeks.  Therefore, the meeting is scheduled to commence on
  20. Sunday, October 10 at 12 noon and is scheduled to adjourn on Thursday,
  21. October 14.

  23.      Prior to the time, the NWG has been almost entirely concerned
  24. with issues of communications and protocol implementation.  However,
  25. we are now in a transitional phase; implementation efforts have been
  26. substantially completed and usage of the Network has emerged as a
  27. primary concern.  Consequently, the theme of this Network Working
  28. Group Meeting is Network usage.
  29.  
  30.      The meeting will provide an opportunity to 1) demonstrate current
  31. capabilities of host systems, 2) identify areas of application, 3)
  32. address issues concerning users and service centers, 4) provide
  33. updated information on status and recent developments.
  34.  
  35.      There will be three sequential phases to the meeting as indicated
  36. in RFC #207.  The first phase, the system programmers workshop, will
  37. commence on Sunday, October 10 at 12 noon and continue through Monday,
  38. October 11.

  40.      The second phase will begin on Tuesday, October 12 at 9:30 a.m.
  41. In addition to any workshops that may be organized the following
  42. activities are scheduled:
  43.  
  44.      a)  A Protocol review - this session will be jointly
  45.          chaired by John Postel (UCLA) and Alex McKenzie (BBN)
  46.          and is open to concerned and knowledgeable persons.
  47.          The session is intended to review current standard
  48.          protocols.

  50.      b)  A course in NIC usage - this session will be a tutorial
  51.          in the use of the NIC.  The size of the group is
  52.          limited by the number of available consoles.  To

  60.      c)  TIP Users - this session will be devoted to a
  61.          presentation of the characteristics of a Terminal
  62.          Interface MessAge Processor (TIP) and the use of a
  63.          TIP for accessing remote services.  There will also
  64.          be a discussion period.  The session will be conducted
  65.          by BBN and is open to interested participants.

  67.      The third phase will begin on Wednesday, October 14.  Wednesday's
  68. session will consist of reports on status and recent developments.  In
  69. the morning the following developments will be reported -- the outcome
  70. of the system programmers workshop, results of the Protocol review,
  71. specifications for Network on-line co-operative interaction, NIC
  72. philosophy, status report on user level Protocol development.  The
  73. afternoon will highlight the status of the ILLIAC IV development,
  74. TENEX development, Data Computer development and current activities in
  75. Network Climate Dynamics.  The session will conclude with a discussion
  76. of Network Management.

  78.      On Thursday morning representatives of Network service centers
  79. and user groups will hold a round table discussion on access to
  80. service centers via the Network.  This discussion will be open to the
  81. public and audience participation will be invited.

  83.      Cocktails and dinner are planned for Wednesday evening beginning
  84. at 5:30 p.m.

  86.      More information on the October NWG meeting along with a schedule
  87. listing workshop meeting times and rooms will be available at a later
  88. date.

  90.      All NWG meeting attendees should register for the meeting by
  91. calling Anne Speare at (617) 864-6900 x1458.  A block of rooms has
  92. been reserved at the Hotel Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
  93. Meeting attendees can obtain a reservation at the Hotel Sonesta from
  94. Anne Speare.  The rooms will be allocated on a first come first served
  95. basis.
