  17.          Network Data Management Committee Meeting Announcement
  18.  
  19. The data management discussions at the recent NWG meeting resulted in
  20. the formation of a Network Data Management Committee to be chaired by
  21. Doug McKay, IBM.  The purpose of the committee, as stated in RFC 146,
  22. is:
  23.  
  24.       (a)  to classify the issues involved and to propose
  25.            various approaches;
  26.       (b)  to integrate the hitherto independent network
  27.            activities that address problems in the area of data
  28.            sharing; and
  29.       (c)  to set up and coordinate appropriate experiments
  30.            to test the services developed and to evaluate
  31.            alternative approaches.

  33. An informal meeting was held Wednesday morning, 19 May to estab- lish an
  34. approach for achieving the above objectives.  The attendees were:

  43. Due to an overlap with a file transfer committee meeting, membership of
  44. the data management committee was not established.
  45.  
  46. A decision was made to hold a data management meeting at CCA in
  47. Cambridge prior to the next general NWG meeting.  The structure and
  48. format of the meeting will be similar to that of the network graphics
  49. meeting (RFC 87); that is, the price of admission for an organization is
  50. a working paper on one or more of the areas chosen for discussion,
  51. accompanied by an oral presentation.

  60. The meeting will provide an opportunity for varying viewpoints on
  61. network data sharing to be expressed.  The essential issues will be
  62. educed, thus fulfilling the committee's objective (a).  Compre- hensive
  63. plans for attaining objectives (b) and (c) can then be established.  We
  64. expect that responsibilities for carrying out objectives (b) and (c)
  65. will be assumed by interested committee members.

  67. One of the original objectives of the meeting was to elicit comments on
  68. the data language for the data computer, following a presentation of
  69. design specifications by CCA.  Due to a change in scheduling at CCA,
  70. they will discuss the facilities to be provided by the data computer
  71. rather than language itself.  Therefore meeting participants will have
  72. an opportunity to provide input to the language design which will be
  73. specifically directed at provision of the facilities.

  75.    Some suggested topics for position papers are:
  76.  
  77.       (a)  philosophical discussion on computer network
  78.            data sharing;
  79.       (b)  syntactic and semantic considerations for data
  80.            description and access languages;
  81.       (c)  approaches for the integration of data handling
  82.            services already available;
  83.       (d)  experimentation methodology for evaluating
  84.            alternative data sharing techniques;
  85.       (e)  information content and structure of a network
  86.            data directory; and
  87.       (f)  operational or control protocol.

  89. Any or all of the above topics can be addressed in a single paper.
  90. Other ideas for position paper topics can be gleaned from RFC #s 144 and
  91. 146.  Many of the comments made at the data management session, 18 May,
  92. at the NWG meeting (RFC 164, pp. 26-29) can be expanded and expounded
  93. upon.

  95. Position papers should be submitted ti Doug McKay by 16 July (received
  96. no later than 19 July).  A meeting agenda, copies of all submitted
  97. papers, and a background bibliography will be distributed to all
  98. participants by 23 July.  The meeting will be held at CCA, 565
  99. Technology Square, Cambridge, Mass. from 2 August until 4 August.  All
  100. participants should contact Marty Ginsberg, CCA (617-491-3670) by 16
  101. July for hotel reservations.
