  13.    This note is intended as a response to an RFC which suggested that
  14.    nodes describe their graphics environment. The following graphics
  15.    facilites are now at Ames for the IBM 360/67 TSS:
  16.  
  17.       a.   An SC 4020 off line microfilm system.
  18.       b.   Calcomp plotters.
  19.       c.   ARDS storage tube CRTs.
  20.       d.   IMLAC PDS-1 refresh CRTs.
  21.       e.   One IBM 2250 CRT.

  23.    Devices which will be in use in the near future are:

  25.       a.   An Evans and Sutherland LDS-2 system.
  26.       b.   Hazeltine alphanumeric CRTs.
  27.  
  28.    Because of the diverse nature of the devices and the varying software
  29.    support provided by the manafacturers, work has been undertaken to
  30.    provide a device independent package. This package is currently being
  31.    implemented. The basic entity is a device independent intermediate
  32.    language which describes the picture to be displayed. When a device
  33.    is selected, the intermediate language is converted to specific
  34.    device orders.

  36.    Other features include the definition and storage of subpictures for
  37.    later construction of more complex pictures. An interface has been
  38.    specified so that graphic data sets can be transmitted to other
  39.    installations on the TSS network.

  41.    A note to those who plan to use the ILLIAC IV when it becomes a
  42.    functioning node at Ames. I would like information concerning the
  43.    graphics environment at your sites and any thoughts you have on how
  44.    you will be using graphics with the ILLIAC IV.
