  23. T-CARRIER                              A time-division, pulse modulation, voice
  24.                                        carrier used on exchange cable to
  25.                                        provide short-haul trunks.
  26.  
  27. TAIL END HOP OFF (TEHO)                In a private network, a call which is
  28.                                        carried over a flat rate facilities
  29.                                        (Intermachine Trunks or IMT) to the
  30.                                        closest switch node to the destination
  31.                                        of the call, and then connected into the
  32.                                        public network as a local call.
  33.  
  34. TANDEM                                 A switching arrangement in which the
  35.                                        trunk from the calling office is
  36.                                        connected to a trunk to the called
  37.                                        office through an intermediate point.
  38.  
  39. TANDEM SWITCHING SYSTEM                Synonym: Tandem Tie Trunk Network.

  41.  
  42. TANDEM TIE TRUNK NETWORK (TTTN)        A serving arrangement which permits
  43.                                        sequential connection of tie trunks
  44.                                        between PBX/CENTREX locations by
  45.                                        utilizing tandem operation.
  46.  
  47. TANDEM TRUNKING                        Trunks which connects two or more
  48.                                        switches together.
  49.  
  50. TARIFF                                 The published rates, regulations, and
  51.                                        descriptions governing the provisions of
  52.                                        communications service.
  53.  
  54. TELCO                                  Local telephone company.
  55.  
  56. TELECOMMUNICATIONS                     The transmission of voice and/or data
  57.                                        through a medium by means of electrical
  58.                                        impulses and includes all aspects of
  59.                                        transmitting information.
  60.  
  61. TELEGRAPH                              A system employing the interruption of,
  62.                                        or change in, the polarity of DC current
  63.                                        signaling to convey coded information.
  64.  
  65. TELEPHONE                              A device which converts acoustical
  66.                                        (sound) energy into electrical energy
  67.                                        for transmission to a distant point.
  68.  
  69. TELETYPEWRITER                         A machine used to transmit and/or
  70.                                        receive communications on printed page
  71.                                        and/or tape.
  72.  
  73. TERMINAL                               (1) The device used at a subscriber's
  74.                                        location for purposes of communicating,
  75.                                        such as the telephone instrument,
  76.                                        teleprinter, computer terminal, etc.,
  77.                                        (2) The "end point" or extremity" such
  78.                                        as Terminal Pole of an open wire line,
  79.                                        or Terminal Office representing the
  80.                                        final central office in a switching
  81.                                        network where the subscriber's call
  82.                                        originates or terminates.

  84. TERMINAL EQUIPMENT                     Devices, apparatus, and their associated
  85.                                        interfaces used to forward information
  86.                                        to a local customer or a distant
  87.                                        terminal.
  88.  
  89. TERMINATION                            (1) An item that is connected to the
  90.                                        terminal of a circuit or equipment.
  91.                                        (2) An impendance connected to the end
  92.                                        of a circuit being tested.
  93.  
  94. TIE-LINE                               A private line connecting two PBXs.
  95.  
  96. TIME DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (TDM)       Equipment which enables the transmitting
  97.                                        of a number of signals over a single
  98.                                        path by  transmitting them sequentially
  99.                                        at different instants of time.
  100.  
  101. TOLL CALL                              Any call to a point outside the local
  102.                                        service area.
  103.  
  104. TOLL CENTER                            (1) A central office where  operators
  105.                                        (human or mechanical) are present to
  106.                                        assist in completing incoming toll
  107.                                        calls. (2) A center for the switching of
  108.                                        toll calls.
  109.  
  110. TOLL PLANT                             The facilities that connect toll offices
  111.                                        throughout the country.
  112.  
  113. TOLL RESTRICTION                       A restriction in outgoing trunks which
  114.                                        counts the first three digits dialed and
  115.                                        diverts calls to forbidden codes either
  116.                                        to a busy tone, to the operator, or to a
  117.                                        recorded announcement.
  118.  
  119. TOUCH-TONE ADAPTOR                     A device that can be connected to a
  120.                                        rotary dial telephone to allow for DTMF
  121.                                        signaling.
  122.  
  123. TRAFFIC                                Calls being sent and received over a
  124.                                        communications network.
  125.  
  126. TRAFFIC MEASUREMENT AND RECORDING      A computer generated report showing usage
  127. SYSTEMS (TMRS)                         usage information of telephone systems.
  128.                                        Usually this includes trunk utilization,
  129.                                        outages, queueing time, and the need for
  130.                                        additional common equipment.

  132. TRAFFIC SERVICE POSITION SYSTEM        A toll switchboard position configured
  133. (TSPS)                                 as a push button console.
  134.  
  135. TRANSMISSION                           The electrical transfer of a signal,
  136.                                        mesage or other forms of data from one
  137.                                        location to another without unacceptable
  138.                                        loss of information content due to
  139.                                        attenuation, distortion, or noise.
  140.  
  141. TRANSMISSION LEVEL                     The level of power of a signal normally
  142.                                        1,000 Hz, which should be measured at a
  143.                                        particular reference point.
  144.  
  145. TRANSMISSION SPEED                     Number of pulses or bits transmitted in
  146.                                        a given period of time, usually
  147.                                        expressed as Bits Per Second (BPS) or
  148.                                        Words Per Minute (WPM).
  149.  
  150. TRUNK                                  A single circuit between two points both
  151.                                        of which are switching centers and/or
  152.                                        individual distribution points.
  153.  
  154. TRUNK GROUP                            An arrangement of communications
  155.                                        channels into an identical group.
  156.  
  157. TRUNK TYPE (TT)                        Trunks that use the same type of
  158.                                        equipment going to to the same
  159.                                        terminating location.
  160.  
  161. TRUNK UTILIZATION REPORT (TUR)         A computer printout detailing the
  162.                                        traffic use of a trunk.
  163.  
  164. TWO-WIRE CIRCUIT                       1. A channel for tranamitting data in
  165.                                        one direction at a time. 2. A short
  166.                                        distance channel using a single
  167.                                        send/receive pathway, usually 2 copper
  168.                                        wires, connecting a telephone to a
  169.                                        switch.
  170.  
  171. TELETYPEWRITER EXCHANGE SERVICE        A service whereby a customer's leased
  172. (TWX)                                  teletypewriter is connected to a "TWX"
  173.                                        switchboard and from there connected
  174.                                        over regular toll circuits to
  175.                                        teletypewriter of any U.S. customer who
  176.                                        subscribes to a similar service.

  181. UNIFORM CALL DISTRIBUTOR (UCD)         A device located at the telephone office
  182.                                        or in a PABX which distributes incoming
  183.                                        calls evenly among individuals.

  185. UNIFORM SERVICE ORDER CODE (USOC)      The information in coded form for
  186.                                        billing purposes by the local telephone
  187.                                        company pertaining to information on
  188.                                        service orders and service equipment
  189.                                        records.

  194. VALUE-ADDED NETWORK SERVICE (VANS)     A data transmission network which routes
  195.                                        messages according to available paths,
  196.                                        assures that the message will be
  197.                                        received as it was sent, provides for
  198.                                        user security, high speed transmission,
  199.                                        and conferencing among terminals.
  200.  
  201. VIA NET LOSS (VNL)                     The lowest loss in dB at which a trunk
  202.                                        facility can be operated considering
  203.                                        limitations of echo, crosstalk, noise,
  204.                                        and singing.
  205.  
  206. VOICE CONNECTING ARRANGEMENT           An interface arrangement provided by the
  207.                                        telephone company to accomodate the
  208.                                        connections of non-carrier provided
  209.                                        voice terminal equipment to the public
  210.                                        switched telephone network.
  211.  
  212. VOICE FREQUENCY (VF)                   Any of the frequencies in the band
  213.                                        300-3,400 Hz which must be transmitted
  214.                                        to reproduce the voice with reasonable
  215.                                        fidelity.
  216.  
  217. VOICE GRADE                            An access line  suitable for voice,
  218.                                        low-speed data, facsimile, or telegraph
  219.                                        service. Generally, it has a frequency
  220.                                        range of about 300-3000 Hz.
  221.  
  222. VOICE GRADE FACILITY (VGF)             A circuit designed to DDD network
  223.                                        standards which is suitable for voice,
  224.                                        low-speed data, facsimile, or telegraph
  225.                                        services.

  230. WIDE AREA TELECOMMUNICATIONS          A special direct distance dialing (toll)
  231. SERVICE (WATS)                        service whereby a subscriber installs a
  232.                                       dedicated line arranged for either
  233.                                       inward or outward calls (not both)
  234.                                       between the customer's premises and a
  235.                                       specific gepgraphic area.
  236.  
  237. WIDEBAND                              A term applied to facilities or circuits
  238.                                       where bandwidths are greater than that
  239.                                       required for one voice channel.
  240.  
  241. WIRE CENTER                           The physical structure that house one or
  242.                                       more channel office switching systems.
