  22. ECHO                                  A signal that has been reflected or
  23.                                       otherwise returned with sufficient
  24.                                       magnitude and delay to be percieved by
  25.                                       the speaker.
  26.  
  27. ECHO RETURN LOSS (ERL)                The loss which must be in the echo path
  28.                                       to reduce echo to a tolerable amount.
  29.  
  30. ECHO SUPRESSOR                        A device which detects speech signals
  31.                                       transmitted in either direction on a
  32.                                       four-way circuit, and introduces loss
  33.                                       in the direction of transmission.
  34.  
  35. EIGHT HUNDRED SERVICE (800)           A commonly used reference for inward WATS
  36.                                       service (See WATS, Inward).
  37.  
  38. EITHER END HOP OFF (EEHO)             Uses either Head Hop Off or Tail End Hop
  39.                                       Off.
  40.  
  41. ELECTRONIC DATA PROCESSING            The use of electronic memories to store,
  42.                                       up-date, read, and use information.
  43.  
  44. ELECTRONIC KEY TELEPHONE SETS (EKTS)  A generic term indicating key telephones
  45.                                       with special buttons which are
  46.                                       electronically programmed to access
  47.                                       various PBX features.
  48.  
  49. ELECTRONIC SWITCHING SYSTEM (ESS)     A Bell System term for electronic
  50.  
  51. ELECTRONICALLY PROGRAMMABLE READ      Memory which is initially programmed by
  52. ONLY MEMORY (EPROM)                   the manufacturer.  Changes can be made to
  53.                                       conform to the customer requirements
  54.                                       at their premises.
  55.  
  56. ELECTRONIC TANDEM NETWORK (ETN)       1. A private network automatically and
  57.                                       electronically connecting the calling
  58.                                       office to the called office through
  59.                                       Tandem-Tie-Trunks. The network switches
  60.                                       also function as PBX's. 2. An AT&T
  61.                                       product name. 3. Used as a generic term
  62.                                       a PBX base network.
  63.  
  64. END OFFICE CONVERSATION               When an end office offers equal access.
  65.  
  66. ENHANCED PRIVATE SWITCHED             A private network utilizing Bell provided
  67. COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE (EPSCS)        equipment located in the central office
  68.                                       and dedicated to a specific customer.
  69.  
  70. E&M LEADS                             A pair of leads which carry signals
  71.                                       between trunk equipment and seperate
  72.                                       signaling equipment unit.  The M lead
  73.                                       transmits battery or ground signals to
  74.                                       the signaling equipment, and the E lead
  75.                                       recieves open or ground signals from the
  76.                                       signaling equipment.
  77.  
  78. E&M SIGNALING                         An arrangement whereby signaling between
  79.                                       a trunk circuit and an associated
  80.                                       signaling unit is effected over two
  81.                                       leads providing full-time, 2-way,
  82.                                       2-level supervision.
  83.  
  84. ENTERPRISE NUMBER                     A unique telephone exchange number that
  85.                                       permits the called party to be
  86.                                       automatically for the incoming calls.
  87.                                       Synonym: "Toll Free Number;" INWARD WATS.
  88.  
  89. EQUALIZATION                          The procedure of compensating for
  90.                                       fluctuation in circuit amplitude, delay,
  91.                                       or distortion.
  92.  
  93. ERLANG                                A unit of traffic intensity. One Erlang
  94.                                       is the intensity at which one traffic
  95.                                       path would be countinuously occupied,
  96.                                       e.g., one call per hour.
  97.  
  98. ERLANG B TABLE                        A method for determining grade of service
  99.                                       for a specified amount of traffic.
  100. ERROR RATE                            The probability of an error ocurring
  101.                                       during the transmission of a message.
  102.  
  103. EXCHANGE                              A telephone switching center.
  104.  
  105. EXCHANGE AREA                         A geographical unit established within a
  106.                                       telephone company's serving area for the
  107.                                       adminastration of telephone service
  108.                                       provided. One schedule of charges applies
  109.                                       to the whole area. Usually served by one
  110.                                       or more central offices and their
  111.                                       associated outside plant.
  112.  
  113. EXCAHNGE NETWORK FACILITIES FOR       AT&T's pricing arrangement for local
  114. INTERSTATE ACCESS (ENFIA)             loops offered to OCCs for connecting the
  115.                                       OCC's network to the local telephone
  116.                                       company's central office.
  117.  
  118. EXPECTED MEASURED LOSS (EML)          The calculated 1 kH  loss of the trunk
  119.                                       shown on the circuit or design layout
  120.                                       record.
  121.  
  122. EXTENDED AREA SERVICE (EAS)           A telco tariff giving customers the
  123.                                       option whereby the subscriber can pay a
  124.                                       higher flat rate in order to obtain
  125.                                       geographic coverage without additional
  126.                                       per-call charges (non-toll charges).

  132. FACILITY                              Synonym: Circuit.
  133.  
  134. FACSMILE                              The transmission of pictures, maps or
  135.                                       other documents via communications
  136.                                       circuits using a device which scans the
  137.                                       original document, transforms the image
  138.                                       into coded signals and repoduces the
  139.                                       original document at a distant point.
  140.  
  141. FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISON (FC)  The government agency established by the
  142.                                       Communications Act of 1934 which
  143.                                       regulates the interstate communications
  144.                                       industry.
  145.  
  146. FIBER OPTICS                          High speed transmisson using light to
  147.                                       send images ( in telecommunications:
  148.                                       voice or data ) through a flexible bundle
  149.                                       of glass fibers.
  150. FOREIGN EXCHANGE LINES (FX)           A special access hardwire circuit that
  151.                                       provides service between a telephone at a
  152.                                       customer's location and a distant central
  153.                                       office.
  154.  
  155. FOUR WIRE CIRCUIT                     A communications path which employs two
  156.                                       separates electrical paths one recieving
  157.                                       and one transmitting.
  158.  
  159. FREQUENCY                             The number of complete cycles per unit of
  160.                                       time.
  161.  
  162. FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (FD)  The division of an available frequency
  163.                                       into bands.  This modulation technique
  164.                                       requires the derived channels, each to
  165.                                       have their own baseband and that
  166.                                       "guardbands" be provided between channels
  167.                                       to minimize interference or crosstalk
  168.                                       from adjacent channels.
  169.  
  170. FREQUENCY RESPONSE                    The reaction of frequencies to the
  171.                                       circuit components.
  172.  
  173. FULL DUPLEX                           A circuit which allows transmission of a
  174.                                       message in both directions at the same
  175.                                       time.
  176.  
  177. FULL PERIOD                           The condition of a switching system where
  178.                                       each input a switching stage has access
  179.                                       to every output from the stage.

  185. GRADE OF SERVICE                      The probability of a call being blocked
  186.                                       by busy trunks, expressed as a decimal
  187.                                       fraction, and usually meaning the
  188.                                       busy-hour probability.

  190. GROUP                                 12 circuits processed as a unit in a
  191.                                       carrier system.

  196. HALF DUPLEX                           A circuit for transmitting or receiving
  197.                                       signals in one direction at a time.
  198.  
  199. HANDSET                               That portion of the telephone containing
  200.                                       hand-held when the telephone is in use.
  201.  
  202. HARDWARE                              Physical equipment or components of a
  203.                                       computer system rather than a programmed
  204.                                       method use.
  205.  
  206. HARDWIRE                              To wire or cable directly between units
  207.                                       of equipment.
  208.  
  209. HARMONIC                              The full multiple of a base frequency.
  210.  
  211. HARMONIC DISTORTION                   The ratio, expressed in decibels, of the
  212.                                       power at the fundamental frequency, to
  213.                                       the power of a harmonic of that
  214.                                       fundamental.
  215.  
  216. HEAD END HOP OFF (HEHO)               A method of traffic engineering whereby
  217.                                       calls are completed by using long
  218.                                       distance facilities directly off the
  219.                                       switch that serves that location.
  220.  
  221. HERTZ (Hz)                            International standard unit of frequency.
  222.                                       Replaces, and is identical to, the order
  223.                                       unit "Cycles-per-second."
  224.  
  225. HOMING                                Returning to the starting position, as in
  226.                                       a rotary stepping switch.
  227.  
  228. HOOKSWITCH                            The device on which the telephone
  229.                                       receiver hangs or on which a telephone
  230.                                       handset hangs or rests when not in use.
  231.                                       The weight of the reciever or handset
  232.                                       operates a switch which opens the
  233.                                       telephone circuit, leaving only the bell
  234.                                       connected to the line.
  235.  
  236. HOT-CUT                               Virtually instantaneous replacement of
  237.                                       one line with another.
  238.  
  239. HYBRID                                An electronic circuit which performs the
  240.                                       wire conversations necessary for the
  241.                                       connection of a local loop with a
  242.                                       long-haul facility.

  247. INTERCEPT                             To stop a telephone call directed to an
  248.                                       improper telephone number, and redirect
  249.                                       that call to an operator or a recording.
  250. INTERCONNECT                          1) The arrangement that permits the
  251.                                       connection of customer's telecommunica-
  252.                                       tions equipment to a communications
  253.                                       common carrier network. 2) The industry
  254.                                      name for manufacturers, excluding the
  255.                                       Bell system, which provide CPE telephone
  256.                                       equipment.
  257.  
  258. INTER-EXCHANGE MILEAGE (IXC)          The airline mileage between two cities.
  259.                                       Synonym: Long Haul Mileage.
  260.  
  261. INTEREXCHANGE PLANT                   The facilities between the subscriber
  262.                                       switching center and another switching
  263.                                       center.
  264.  
  265. INTERFACE                             The junction or point of interconnection
  266.                                       between two systems or equipment having
  267.                                       different characteristics.
  268.  
  269. INTERFERENCE                          Any unwanted noise or crosstalk on a
  270.                                       communications circuit which acts to
  271.                                       reduce the intelligibilty of the desired
  272.                                       signal or speech.
  273.  
  274. INTER-MACHINE TRUNK (IMT)             A circuit which connects two automatic
  275.                                       switching centers.
  276.  
  277. INTER-OFFICE TRUNK (IOT)              A direct trunk between local exchange
  278.                                       offices.
  279.  
  280. INTERNATIONAL RECORD CARRIER (IRC)    Companies that handle the intra-U.S.
  281.                                       portion of international record
  282.                                       transmission.
  283.  
  284. INTERSTATE                            Any connection made between two states.
  285.  
  286. INTRASTATE                            Anyconnection made that remains within
  287.                                       the boundaries of a single state.

  292. JACK                                  A connecting device having springs which
  293.                                       make electrical contact with mating
  294.                                       contacts of a plug.
  295.  
  296. JITTER                                Short term instability of the amplitude
  297.                                       and/or phase of a signal.
  298.                                       Commonly called: PHASE JITTER.

  303. KEYSET                                Muti-push button keys located on a
  304.                                       telephone which may be punched in
  305.                                       sequence for sending telephone number

  308. KEY SYSTEM                            The equipment utilized to provide the
  309.                                       features associated with key sets.

  314. LEASED LINES                          Any circuit or combination of circuits
  315.                                       designated to be at the exclusive
  316.                                       disposal of a given subscriber.
  317.                                       Synonym:  Private Line.

  319. LEAST COST ROUTING (LCR)              A method of automatically selecting the
  320.                                       least costly facility for transmission of
  321.                                       a call.
  322.                                       Synonym: Most Economical Route Selection
  323.                                       (MERS): Route Optimization.
  324.  
  325. LEVEL                                 An expression of the relative signal
  326.                                       strength at a point in a communications
  327.                                       circuit compared to a standard.
  328.  
  329. LOADING                               A system for adding regularly spaced
  330.                                       inductance units to a circuit to improve
  331.                                       its transmission characteristics.
  332.  
  333. LOCAL ACCESS AND TRANSPORT AREA       Defines the local calling area as
  334. (LATA)                                established by the court ordered AT&T
  335.                                       divestiture plan.
  336.  
  337. LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)              Intraoffice communication system usually
  338.                                       used to provide data transmission in
  339.                                       addition to voice transmission.
  340.  
  341. LOCAL LOOP                            The local connection between the end user
  342.                                       and the Class 5 central office.
  343.  
  344. LONG HAUL                             Circuits spanning considerable distances.
  345.  
  346. LOOP BACK                             A method of performing transmission tests
  347.                                       on a circuit not requiring the assistance
  348.                                       of personnel at the distant end.

  351.                                       conductors and the terminating equipment

  357. MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME (MDF)         The point where outside plant cables

  362. MAIN PBX                              A PBX directly connected to a switch via
  363.                                       an access trunk group.
  364.  
  365. MANUAL TIE LINE                       A tie line which requires the assistance
  366.                                       of an attendant at both ends of the
  367.                                       circuit in order to complete a call.
  368.  
  369. MASTER GROUP (MG)                     240 circuits processed as a unit in a
  370.                                       carrier service.
  371.  
  372. MESSAGE TELEPHONE SERVICE (MTS)       AT&T's tariffed pricing name for long
  373.                                       distance telephone calls.
  374.  
  375. MESSAGE UNIT (MU)                     A local toll rate calling plan which is
  376.                                       time and distance sensitive.
  377.  
  378. METAL OXIDE SEMICONDUCTOR (MOS)       A type of computer memory utilizing 1/4
  379.                                       inch square slices of silicon.  These
  380.                                       silicon slices require constant electric
  381.                                       current for the data to be retained.
  382.  
  383. MICROWAVE (M/W)                       Radio transmission using very short
  384.                                       lengths , corresponding to a frequency of
  385.                                       1,000 megahertz or greater.
  386.                                       Synonym:  Microwave Radio.
  387.  
  388. MICROWAVE RADIO                       Synonym: Microwave.
  389.  
  390. MODEM                                 A device which modulates and demodulates
  391.                                       signals on a carrier frequency and allows
  392.                                       the interface of digital terminals with
  393.                                       analog carrier systems.
  394.  
  395. MODULATION                            Alterations in the characteristics of
  396.                                       carrier waves.  Usually impressed on the
  397.                                       amplitude and/or the frequency.
  398.  
  399. MONITORING DEVICE                     Records data on calls placed through a
  400.                                       length of calls, calling location.
  401.  
  402. MOST ECONOMICAL ROUTE SELECTION       Synonym: Least Cost Routing
  403. (MERS)
  404.  
  405. MULTIPLEXING                          The act of combining a number of
  406.                                       individual message circuits for
  407.                                       transmission over a common path.  Two
  408.                                       methods are used: (1) frequency division,
  409.                                       and (2) time division.

  415. NETWORK                               A collection of switches connected to one
  416.                                       another by transmission facilities.
  417.  
  418. NETWORK NUMBERING EXCHANGE (NNX)      The three digit location code
  419.                                       representing the central office.  "N" may
  420.                                       be any number between "2" and "9" and "X"
  421.                                       may be any number.
  422.  
  423. NETWORK TRUNKS                        Circuits connecting switching centers.
  424.  
  425. NODE                                  A terminal of any branch of a network.
  426.  
  427. NON-BLOCKING                          A switching network having a sufficient
  428.                                       number of paths such that a subscriber
  429.                                       originating a call can always reach any
  430.                                       other idle subscriber without
  431.                                       encountering a busy.
  432.  
  433. NUMBERING PLAN AREA (NPA)             A geographical division within which no
  434.                                       two telephones will have the same 7 digit
  435.                                       number.  "N" is any number between "2"
  436.                                       and "9"; "P" is always "1" or "0"; and
  437.                                       "A" is any number excluding "10."
