  18. 1 :  General
  19. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  20.  * 1.1 :  Introduction
  21.
  22.    This Recommendation defines the interworking relationship between the layer
  23. 3 functions and protocol of Digital Subscriber Signalling System No.  1 (DSS
  24. 1) and the ISDN User Part functions and protocol of Signalling System No.  7.
  25.
  26.    The interworking between the above two signalling protocols typically may
  27. occur in an ISDN local exchange and is specified in the context of a typical
  28. call in a pure ISDN or mixed ISDN/non-ISDN environment.
  29.
  30.
  31.
  32.  * 1.2 :  Purpose
  33.
  34.    The purpose of the Recommendation is:
  35.
  36.    a) to define how the layer 3 protocol of DSS 1 and Signalling System No.  7
  37.       ISDN User Part protocol should be used in combination with call control
  38.       functions, to support the basic bearer service;
  39.
  40.    b) to provide a logical bridge between the abstract signalling information
  41.       flows, which are used in the description of ISDN services, and the
  42.       corresponding messages and elements of procedure of the ISDN
  43.       User-Network Interface User Part protocols.
  44.
  45.
  46.
  47.  * 1.3 :  Scope
  48.
  49.    This Recommendation is aimed at defining the interworking relationship
  50. between the call control protocol of the Digital Sub- scriber Signalling
  51. System No.  1 and the ISDN User Part of Signal- ling System No.  7.
  52.
  53.    The Recommendation defines in detail the relationship between signalling
  54. information conveyed via the Digital Subscriber Signalling System No.  1
  55. protocol and similar signalling information conveyed via the ISDN User Part of
  56. Signalling System No.  7.  The above relationship is described within the
  57. context of supporting the provision of basic bearer service for a call within
  58. an ISDN or mixed ISDN/non-ISDN environment.
  59.
  60.
  61.
  62.  * 1.4 :  Relationship to other Recommendations
  63.
  64.    This Recommendation forms part of a set of interlocking ISDN service and
  65. signalling Recommendations.  Other members of this set include the following:
  66.
  67.     o the operation of basic ISDN telephony teleservice and 64 kbitB/Fs bearer
  68.       service, which is supported in part via the interworking of the ISDN
  69.       signalling systems described herein, is defined in detail in
  70.       Recommendation Q.71 (basic service stage 2 description);
  71.
  72.     o the signalling messages and elements of procedure of layer of the
  73.       Digital Subscriber Signalling System No.  1 and the ISDN User Part of
  74.       Signalling System No.  7 are defined in Recommendations Q.930/931
  75.       (I.450/451) and Recommendations Q.761-Q.764 and Q.766, respectively.
  76.
  77.
  78.
  79. 2 :  Methodology
  80. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  81.  * 2.1 :  General
  82.
  83.    This chapter describes the methodology used to model and define
  84. interworking between the ISDN User Part and layer 3 of Digital Subscriber
  85. Signalling System No.  1.  The methodology is based on the layer service
  86. concepts prescribed by the Reference Model of Open System Interconnection
  87. (OSI) for CCITT Applications (Recommendation X.200) and uses the terms and
  88. conventions defined in Recommendation X.210 (OSI Layer Service Definition
  89. Conventions).
  90.
  91.    The methodology used is for description purposes only.  It does not imply
  92. that this type of layering is essential in a real implementation.
  93.
  94.    The interworking model is described in S 2.2.  Subsequent sections identify
  95. and review the diagrams and tables utilized in describing the model, its
  96. functions and the signalling information transfers between the call control
  97. functional entities.
  98.
  99.
  100.
  101.  * 2.2 :  Interworking model
  102.
  103.    The interworking model encompasses 3 functional entities, including call
  104. control, the incoming signalling system and the outgoing signalling system,
  105. where incoming or outgoing refers to the direction of call set-up.  The
  106. signalling system entities may represent either the ISDN User Part of the User
  107. Network Interface Protocol.
  108.
  109.    The call control entity acts as an intermediary between the ISDN access and
  110. network signalling protocols.  It typically invokes local call processing
  111. decisions/actions as a result of receiving a primitive from one signalling
  112. system (e.g.  incoming access).  As a result of that processing, it may send a
  113. primitive to the same sigalling system and/or another signalling system (e.g.
  114. outgoing network).  Local call processing decisions/actions (e.g.  routing and
  115. through connection) are independent of the type of signalling system used by
  116. call control entities to communicate with each other.
  117.
  118.    There are 4 types of primitives:
  119.
  120.    a) Request:  A primitive issued by a call control entity to invoke a
  121.       signalling procedure and thereby transfer information to a peer entity.
  122.
  123.    b) Indication:  A primitive issued by the signalling protocol to invoke a
  124.       call control procedure or indicate that procedure has been invoked by
  125.       the peer call control entity.
  126.
  127.    c) Response:  A primitive issued by call control (if required), to indicate
  128.       completion of a procedure previously invoked by an indication.
  129.
  130.    d) Confirm:  A primitive issued by the signalling protocol to call control
  131.       (if required) to indicate completion of a procedure previously invoked
  132.       by a request from the same call control entity.
  133.
  134.    The descriptions of the incoming and outgoing signalling system functional
  135. entities are not part of this Recommendation but are provided in
  136. Recommendation Q.931 for Digital Subscriber Signalling System and in
  137. Recommendations Q.761-Q.764 and Q.766 for the ISDN User Part.

  140.
  141.  * 2.3 :  Time sequence diagrams
  142.
  143.    Time sequence or "arrow" diagrams are provided to show the permitted
  144. temporal relationships between primitives and between primitives and
  145. signalling messages, and the time sequence of these relationships during the
  146. process of executing a call control procedure.  The general format of an arrow
  147. diagram is shown in Figure 2/Q.699.
  148.
  149.    Due to the multiplicity of optional possibilities in both the ISDN User
  150. Part and the Digital Subscriber Signalling System protocols not all possible
  151. cases are shown in the arrow diagrams.  The diagrams which are included
  152. represent a sample of typical situations.
  153.
  154.    Sequences of interactions are shown along vertical lines which represent
  155. increasing time in the downward direction.
  156.
  157.    Broken line arrows represent individual primitives and indicate their
  158. direction of propagation, i.e.  to or from call control.
  159.
  160.    Solid line arrows represent signalling messages and indicate their
  161. direction of propagation, i.e.  to or from the incoming or outgoing signalling
  162. system.
  163.
  164.    Wavy line arrows ( ), if present, represent tones or announcements sent
  165. inband.
  166.
  167.    For call control the following symbols are used between vertical lines to
  168. indicate the relationship between the incoming and outgoing primitives (e.g.
  169. between B indication and B response) and possibly a call control action taken,
  170. where it is necessary to indicate clearly a particular function that is
  171. invoked by a received primitive.
  172.
  173.    Solid line ( ):  the incoming and outgoing primitives are unconditionally
  174. related, i.e.  the incoming primitive always triggers the sending of the
  175. outgoing primitive independent of the service context in which the incoming
  176. primitive is received.
  177.
  178.    Broken line ( ):  the incoming and outgoing primitives are related only in
  179. the service context considered.  In a different service context this
  180. relationship may not exist.
  181.
  182.    Squiggly line ( ):  the reception of the incoming primitive and the
  183. transmission of the outgoing primitive are unrelated.  This is to indicate
  184. that although these primitives are shown as adjacent in the arrow diagram, the
  185. generation of the outgoing primitive is unrelated to the receipt of the
  186. incoming primitive.

  190.    Where it is necessary to indicate the signalling system function performed
  191. on transmission or reception of a signalling message, the following symbols
  192. are shown below the concerned message:

  198.  * 2.4 :  Mapping tables
  199.
  200.    Mapping tables are provided to define the relationship between User-Network
  201. Interface Protocol messages and information elements on the one hand and ISDN
  202. User Part messages and parameters on the other hand.
  203.
  204.    One table is provided for each User-Network Interface Protocol message that
  205. maps onto an ISDN User Part message.  The same table also specifies the
  206. mapping of elements of information which are carried by the concerned
  207. messages.
  208.
  209.    Elements of information that are of local significance only, i.e.  are not
  210. mapped onto elements of information in the other signalling system, are not
  211. shown.

  262. used between the calling party and the originating local exchange, and enbloc
  263. addressing is used within the network.  An independent ACM and non-automatic
  264. answering terminal is assumed in this case.  Variations are possible as in
  265. Figures 3/Q.699-6/Q.699.

  271.    Figure 8/Q.699 shows the sequence of messages when overlap addressing is
  272. used at the originating access and within the network.  In this case the ACM
  273. through the network informs the originating local exchange that enough address
  274. information has been received, and the exchange can therefore indicate CALL
  275. PROCeeding to the calling party.

  277.
  278. 3.1.7 Overlap addressing, both accesses and network, address complete cannot
  279. ~~~~~ be determined by number analysis
  280.
  281.    In Figure 9/Q.699, overlap addressing is used at both accesses and in the
  282. network.  An example is a call made to an ISDN PABX, where determination of
  283. address complete may only be made as a result of an indication, e.g.
  284. alerting, from the called access.  In this case, the ALERTing message from the
  285. called access allows the sending of an ACM in the network, which since it
  286. carries the "subscriber free" indication is mapped to ALERTing at the calling
  287. access.
  288.
  289.
  290. 3.1.8 Overlap addressing, originating access and network, address complete
  291. ~~~~~ determined by number analysis
  292.
  293.    In Figure 10/Q.699, overlap addressing is used to reduce the post-dialing
  294. delay by allowing connection set-up to be in parallel with the entering of
  295. digits by the calling party.  In this case, proceeding indications can be
  296. independently derived from number analysis.  The diagram assumes independent
  297. ACM sending, however alternative cases are possible as in Figures
  298. 3/Q.699-6/Q.699.
