  2.       Bug Detection on Home phones

  5. First of all to test for bugs, you
  6. need a VOM (Multimeter) the higher
  7. the impedance the better (a Digital
  8. with FET circuitry or a Vacuum Tube
  9. Volt Meter is the best).
  10.  
  11. First disconnect the phone line(s) AT
  12. BOTH ENDS.  Undo the phone instrument
  13. and hook it up to the entry point of
  14. the phone line from the outside world
  15. (Ma Bell does not like you cut her off
  16. completely.)  The scheme is the physi-
  17. cally isolate your house, apartment, etc
  18. from the outside world.  But before you
  19. do this measure the line voltage (It
  20. should be approximately 48 Volts).
  21.  
  22. Now with the wires disconnected at both
  23. ee set your resistance scale to a
  24. high reading and measure the resistance
  25. of the phone line, it should be very
  26. high on the order of million ohms or
  27. more, this is the normal condition,
  28. since you are measuring the resistance
  29. of an open circuit. If it is much less,
  30. say 50-100Kohms then you a device on
  31. the line that does not belong there,
  32. probably a parallel bug.
  33.  
  34. Now twist the end of the disconnected
  35. wire and go to the other end and
  36. measure the resistance of this.  This
  37. resistance should be about one ohm or
  38. two at the most in a big house with a
  39. lot of phones.  If it is more, then
  40. you probably have a series bug.
  41.  
  42. If in the first case, taking parallel
  43. measurements using a meter (not LED/
  44. LCD) and you notice a "kick" in the
  45. needle, you probably have a line tap
  46.  
  47. Now if you also make a measurement with
  48. the wire end twisted together and you
  49. notice the resistance reads about
  50. 1-2kohms, then you may have a drop-out
  51. relay.  A drop-out relay is a relay
  52. that senses a phone going off hook, and
  53. signals a tape recorder to start record-
  54. ing.
  55.  
  56. Another test to do with the phones still
  57. hooked up to the outside world, on hook
  58. voltage is about 48 Volts and off hook
  59. is about 6-10 Volts.  Any other con-
  60. ditions may mean telephone surveillance.
  61.  
  62. If you use a Wide Range Audio frequency
  63. generator and call you house, apartment,
  64. etc. from another phone and sweep up and
  65. down the spectrum, and you notice the
  66. phone answers itself somewhere in the
  67. sweep you probably have an infinity
  68. transmitter on your line.

  70. The above information tells nothing
  71. aut TELCO taps at the central office,
  72. or anywhere else along the line, but
  73. this informsation may tell you that your
  74. wife, girlfriend(boyfriend), or business
  75. associate may be monitoring your phone
  76. activities.

  78. An Infinity transmitter, is a neat device
  79. It allows you to call the bugged place
  80. and it shuts off the ringer and defeats
  81. the switchhook, so the mouthpiece now
  82. becomes a room bug.  It was orginally
  83. sold from the travelling business man
  84. to make sure his wife was safe at home
  85. not being attacked (or fucking her
  86. boyfriend behind his back).
