  3. Motorola Cellphone Serial Numbering

  5. The Mechanical Serial Number (MSN) [also called serial number, SN,
  6. or even S], may be either 10 or 11 characters in length.  The first
  7. 3 characters constitute the Accounting Product Code (APC).  Typically
  8. the APC is not of interest to the field, with a single exception: the
  9. Express 850 is easily distinguished from retail Step-up models by its
  10. APC of 572.  The fourth character is the location of manufacture.
  11. The fifth character is the year of manufacture, and the sixth character
  12. is the month of manufacture.  The next four characters constitute the
  13. actual serial number of that telephone.  Finally, if there is no
  14. eleventh character, the warranty period is one year; if there is an
  15. eleventh character it stipulates a warranty period which may be
  16. determined from the chart below.
